Two Rivers Wis

« on: October 15, 2018, 06:22:21 PM »

We are leaving Wisconsin on Sunday to Fairfield Glade, TN.
We are trailing the 4 cycles down and we plan on riding all week.
We plan on riding to Deals Gap, Blue Ridge HiWay, Wheels Thur Time, Daniel Boone National Park.
Any other roads that are must ride?
Also looking for places that would have the best Barbecue.
Thanks

Just rode the Cherohala Skyway a couple of weeks ago.  It was ok but almost all the overlooks have stuff in front of them so you can't see much.  We found a nice BBQ place in Banner Elk, The Pedalin' Pig Bbq.

I can send you some GPX files from the routes we road.  It was very scenic, along rivers and streams and rural farm land.  We decided that it was about the best scenery we had seen.  I would highly recommend the roads.  They were recommend by Britman from this site.  These are off the radar types of roads.

Take 68 out of Crossville over to Tellico Plains, then 165 (Cherohola Skyway) out of Tellico Plains.  That will take you over to 129 and Deals Gap.

I live just 40 miles west of Fairfield Glade.  Let’s meet up for supper one night.

When you smell the BBQ, start looking for the store. You can't hardly go wrong.

The roads? Where you staying? Camping or moteling? Moving daily or having a central "home". Look at google maps magnified in for details. Any 3 digit road is probably good. Compared to Wis., you'll love the pavement! With a little effort you should be able to stitch together an all day route stopping along the way at a small town diner or café to eat.

Done the Gap and Blue Ridge Parkway so often it is now a connector road. Many of the roads up to and down from the BRP are twisty roads in themselves. 215, 151 and 276 come to mind.  276 south down off the BRP has a decent BBQ (Hawg Wild) at the junction of 276 and 64.

I'm getting hungry for some good BBQ and some great riding.
The weather here has not been good for riding lately, lots of rain, wind and very cool for this time of the year.
Can't wait.
So if you see us driving south give us a wave.

Here is a Mad Map for the Great Smoky Mountains.  I always had one in my tank bag when we lived in Knoxville, and we've traveled many of those roads and many others not on the map.  There are other Mad Maps for most states across the US.

Meet up with Bigwolf this morning and he took us on some great roads one was Calfkiller hi-way thur the woods and the road was about a foot higher than the ground, no forgiveness if you go off the road. I believe hi-way 96 was another then he took us to Stand Rock Park. At the end we stopped at Big Eds BBQ, before we parted.
Thanks a lot Jerry you are a great tour guide.
We only took a few pictures.

I am glad you enjoyed the ride.  It was an honor to lead such an easy going group of riders and show a little southern hospitality.  It was a great day for riding!

I am sure you will find the rest of your Tennessee riding just as pleasurable.

nice trailer, is it 7 or 8 feet wide and how long is it being 25 foot?

Mine is 7x23' and doubt I want much bigger but doubt I can fit 2 VAlk I/S's or goldwings in it side by side being 7 feet wide or close to it needing 8 feet wide trailer.  Was going to go 8 feet wide x 23' but the width parked alongside my house would not work out tight fit the way it is now only a few feet from the lot line.

That's not true. I put 2 Valks on my 6.5 x 10 foot trailer for the ride back from Virginia last Inzane. Both bikes had fairings, and factory saddle bags.   It is tight, but can be done.

Jim

good to know since I bought 2 used but like new Condor wheel chocks been meaning to screw to the floor of my 7x23 trailer just not sure if want side by side or one in front, one in back having spare room on the sides since I also have 2 near 8 foot long ATV''s but probably only 1 ATV come next year or so.  But,  how do you get OFF the 2nd bike in between them when one is already anchored/strapped down?  I guess you crawl out the front since pretty sure the rear saddlebags of each  say I/S are near touching if having along the walls 2-3 inches tops room.  Plus,  if side by side one would think the fairing/handlebars are pretty close in front as well being around 3 feet wide or tad bit more in a 6 1/2' wide trailer.

glad you made it home safe and sound and back to WI gloomy, damp, and cold temps pretty much all of October.  I know pulling my trailer with 2 near 800lb. atv's inside surely drops the mpg on my 1/2 ton truck to 14 mpg tops and although only tops 4500lbs. loaded down, you can tell it is behind you.  You can almost see the fuel needle dropping stepping on the gas.    Add another 1600lbs. for 2 more cycles and am sure mpg drops below 13 avg mpg.
