Our washing machine finally bought the farm last week. Can't be too upset though. We got 16 years out of the $379 purchase. The dryer is fine though, I did have to replace the heating element a few years back. So, my thinking was to just purchase another Maytag washer like we had. They have climbed up to the exorbitant price of $439 though. But my housekeeper (who I refrained from firing recently) had different thoughts. She felt new modern appliances were in order. So, off she went against my direct orders and purchased said items. She must have known me well enough to have the people install it themselves. (I might have let them sit for 2 weeks, just to show her who's the boss around here). So this morning before she runs off to Kingman to have her boobs squashed in a medieval contraption, she starts the washer and dryer. As I'm sitting here watching the news and reading on the iPad, I keep hearing this pleasant mood music. I thought I was in an elevator or having some early onset dementia issues. As I get up to pour another cup of coffee, I realize it's said machines trying to cajole me into doing her work. OH, I LIVE WITH A VERY DEVIOUS WOMEN

OH, I LIVE WITH A VERY DEVIOUS WOMEN We did the same wanted to replace old reliable with new reliable and they are all fancy now. If you get lightening or if you have power surges, unplug them new fancy things when not using them. They all have computerized boards that are very sensitive to power flux and generally that damage is not covered by the warranty!

We recently had to purchase new Washer and Dryer also. We got nearly 20 years of service from them. My friend that owns an appliance store told me that sadly I should not expect to get anything near that long from the new ones, especially the fancy High Efficiency uprights that look so pretty, likely less than 8 years.
He directed me to a old school Speed Queen without a fancy electronic display that is more of a commercial model that he said should last another 20. They aren't as fancy but they cost about $1600 for the pair and I wasn't needing a fashion accessory, just something to clean our clothes. LOL

Rob,
Great story! I laughed as I finished reading the tale... and I had a flashback memory of a time in which an important lesson of life was presented to yours truly...
I was briefly living at home again, as my military career ended and I began the transition to a civilian means of self-support. To set the stage, my parents were three days apart in age, with mom being the slightly older of the two...
I got home on mom's birthday, and dad excitedly greeted me with, "Come here, son, let me show you what I got your mother for her birthday." It was an expensive 'special' shotgun for hunting waterfowl, and sure to improve the odds of bringing down those seemingly armor-plated Canadian geese he loved to hunt.
Three days later, I again got home, but this time mother greeted me and said, "Come here, son, let me show you what I got your dad for his birthday."... a new washer and dryer set! She then sheepishly grinned and wryly added, "Your dad may rule the roost, but I rule the rooster!" Appears you might be in the midst of a learning process of your own!

I don't think I'll ever buy a new laundry machine. There will always be people willing to replace their old reliable machines with fancy digital Bluetooth-music-playing internet-connected machines, selling their old ones on kijiji.

We'll have to look at those SpeedQueens if/when the current units finally expire.

Like you Dave, our friend that owns an appliance store directed us towards the Speed Queen brand. A little bit a a struggle convincing my better half because it didn't look ultra modern with a lot of bells and whistles like the other brands but after using it she LOVES it and does not look back on the choice. Happy wife...happy life......

My first set of Maytags in 73 lasted me 25 years. My set that I bought to replace them are now 20 years old and a bearing went out of the drum on the washer tub. Maytag said I had to replace the drum at a cost of 450 bucks. (I do my own repairs). I took out the drum and read the bearing number, made me a little bearing press out of scrap steel and couple of sockets. Found the bearing at a local implement company and pressed it in. Been running quiet as a mouse for over a year now. I figure I may get 35 years out of this set.

I guess we are lucky so far 25 years on all of our appliances bought all whirlpool back in 1993 new and washer/dryer/fridge/oven all going still. I can say we got our money out of them only thing replaced was an electric oven and electric dryer heating element a year or so ago on both.
Not replacing any of them until they go out for good costing over 100+ bucks since like said, lucky to get 10 years out of any new appliances except for speed queen washer/dryer. I compared speed queen washer/dryers vs. maytag, whirlpool, etc. and they are built HEAVY DUTY and weigh a ton more as well made to last 20+ more years and that is what we will go with when the time comes as well. Spend a few hundred bucks more upfront for double the life expectancy more than likely is money well spent. Our old neighbor who moved in about 13 years ago new house has replaced 2 ovens, 2 washer/dryer sets, 2 fridges, and 2 dishwashers. even 2 toilets, NO thanks! We are still on our two OEM poddies as well since 1993 although those are not susceptible to fail as easily and am sure the newer ones are more water saving/better flushing. Firm believer if is not broke, do not replace.

It only lasted 25 years. BTW: My truck is an F150 25 years old. I keep fixing it too. No plans on a replacement.

28 years on Whirlpool washer and dryer and both still working great.....They don't make any of them to last now. Can't stay in business if your not getting any sales.

When the alarm for the dryer goes off, though... -Mike "for non-speed-queen-owners: it's not quiet" Last year when we needed a new freezer that was replacing one over 20 years old he advised me to buy an extended warranty because all of the new ones have undersized compressors to meet the energy STAR compliance ratings and that they do not last long. He said I would be very lucky if it lasted 6-8 years. And yes, the first time the alarm went off it was pretty startling. LOL

LOL good to know, mine is well over 30+ years old (guessing pushing 45 not sure) and my moms house has one older freezer than that (over 50) and a newer (guessing 20 years) smaller freezer as well for backups. Yah, they are NOT as energy efficient, but doubt you will get the energy savings in smaller electric bills vs. buying new every 10 years. back in the day some 25-30 years and more ago, Maytag was number 1 reliable then Whirlpool with the rest not far behind. Nowadays, even those 2 are not as reliable more similar to the other namebrands for longevity.

I'm not much of an extended warranty person, but from experience now buy them for Washers and Refrigerators. We have gone through several washers after our old reliable washer died a few years ago and my wife hates ALL of the new ones. She wants a regular one that uses all the water it needs to clean the cloths. We have settled for a Samsung unit that is ok but way too much electronics that will break. Dan

I do all my own repairs. Inherited that knowledge from my Father.

Lol... 'Show her who's boss' That never happens without backfire does it? In 17 we bought a 'manufactured' home to put on our newly acquired property in SD. This is our summer home, and I continually point out that it isn't home, it's just to replace our 5th wheel toy hauler. I was able to keep the reins pulled fairly well on Momma with the furniture until I dropped $4000 on a bison chair I told her we were not giving Mr Samsung $3000+ again for a washer and dryer, I'd do some research. Had to go no farther than one of my closest friends, he had a string of dry cleaners. Without any hesitation whatsoever "Buy the cheapest Speed Queen you can find. We run 10 loads a day, 6 days a week, and they're good for 7 or 8 years." Told me he didn't think the brand was that important, just be sure it has no electronics. FWIW, After having the set two summers, vI asked my wife what kind of job she thought it did versus the $1600 washer we have in Florida. She thought they did about the same, couldn't think of the $329.00 one not doing the job. Considering how dirty I get out there (red clay everywhere) thats impressive.

agree, bells and whistles more so on washer and dryers are not worth getting, just more to fail is all and does no better cleaning/drying clothes. Our flat surface push button faces on the washer finally broke off a few weeks ago, but still able to push down in there to switch from hot/cold settings if need be but 95% of the time is warm setting. The plastic sides on top corners are also faded yellow (not white any longer) and starting to chip/break by the movement over 25+ years, still runs though..
My next unit will be speed queen I believe might spend 200 bucks more than the rest and not as fancy, but should last another 25 years being probably the rest of my life..
