Solve for X

     6
--------  = X
2(1+2)

6 = 2(1+2)X

6 = 6X

1 = X

That's good, doctor, but the confusion in the way it's expressed is how much would go in the denomiator position.

       6               6
   -------    or    ---(1+2)
   2(1+2)           2

Gary,

You have solved for x in your first equation,
6
--------  = X
2(1+2)

Written as you have it  and performing the operation in the parenthesis becomes

6
----- =X  , at this point, since this is written as a fraction, I would complete the multiplication in the denominator
2(3)

6
-- =X,   X=1.
6

but 6/2(1+2), would go 6/2(3), 3(3)=9.

My answer also was 9. Not remembering anything from school (clearly), I took it to read as 6/2 x 3.

But I find Willow's explanations most credible.

Actually, in this case, I admit curiousity in opening the thread but I only read the opening post (initially).  But, I get your point.  Wink

9

6 divided by 2 is 3.  1+2 is 3.  3 x 3 is 9
