kids need some fat being kids, so let them have their chocolate milk.  There are far worse things than chocolate milk to drink.  As the article said, if the kids are not eating the school's lunches,  then wasted food and wasted money in the long run for kids will not use the lunch program at all.   I think at least in our school the lunches are pretty good but not cheap though since we do not qualify (just barely out of the family income range)  for reduced fee rates.

Remember back in the 60's (High school), the lunches got so bad kids decided to strike.  Everyone brought their lunches (brown bagged it) for several days.   They got the message, lunches started getting better or at least that what most said.   I always brown bagged my lunch.  Ate a lot back then and the school lunches didn't have enough calories to keep me going.  angel angel

From 1-12, four years in the dorms, and a lot of military cafeterias..... it was all just mystery meat, mashed potatoes and gravy.  We were hungry and we ate it.

And not always, but very often it went through you like stuff through a goose.  Grin

School lunches were a treat. The lunch ladies heated up a lot of stuff kids wouldn't eat.
I was always on for fish day, lasagna day and a couple others.
The kids wouldn't eat it, I'd be glad to help.
I'm the oldest of 6, not at all picky.

Our cinnamon rolls and chili were actually pretty good, and most of our school lunches were at least tolerable

Yeah, the school lunch program is a perfect example of wealth distribution, where the folks paying for the food aren't allowed to eat it (unless they pay again at the table).

Same here, 3 kids and one paycheck didn't allow for the kids to, "eat at a restaurant every day". Mom made lunches, everybody including dad brought them to school and work. I really loved the pizzaburgers, which were made on English muffins. Maybe once a month the parents would give us money for pizzaburger day, as I got older (12-13) and had jobs that paid (like shoveling snow for neighbors) I could afford to but in myself, with my own money. Felt good to be able to say, "no lunch for me tomorrow, mom. I'm buying pizzaburgers".  Smiley

At my high school, BPHS '74, the best lunch, hands down, was the beef cubes in gravy over buttered noodles.  The other lunches weren't bad, but I ate seconds every Thursday, which was BC&G/BN.  There is even a post about this on the BPHS class of '74 Facebook page.

I understand it costs money but pushing 4 bucks for a school lunch meal is a tad bit much for most, should be more like 2.50-3 bucks per meal IMO.  Yah, cannot even get a kids meal at a fast food restaurant for under 4 bucks, but a school lunch program in our town anyways in our area should be a tad bit cheaper.   Then, if you get a side or dessert, etc. depends on if another 50 cents to 1.00 more for a side of something else.   Luckily my senior boy does not eat lunch at school but my daughter now in college did and swear I was putting in 100 bucks every month or so, not cheap.  Pretty sure the cafeteria workers making 8 bucks per hour are not overpaid for their hard work either, someone is making money?

4 bucks for school lunch? What the hell kind of Liberals you have running your state? Our school lunches are $2.30 for lunch and $1.70 for breakfast. My kids eat school lunch every day. They may on occasion want to take their lunch, but then again my boys will eat most anything. They are not picky at all.

Always brought lunch. Usually pb&j   or bread and butter with jelly as we  were really poor then
Jhs  in Bronx sucked getting robbed for the 4cent milk money by big black kids with knives stealing from a skinny 11 yr old.  Also had to hide my 2$ train pass or it would get stolen and I have to walk thru s hit neighborhood each way
Was even held up at gunpoint once

Those fukheads were using it for horse...heroin in 67.  Hope they are all worm food by now
