Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

One Step At A Time…

Well, yesterday morning early, it was raining… then big, wet snowflakes began to fall. Later, that snow actually began to stick, and we ended up with a minor amount of accumulation. To put that into perspective, remember I’ve lived most of my life in central and south Florida… I even lived for twelve years south of a town named ‘Frostproof’… you can guess how it got that name! So, for yours truly, I was witnessing a veritable blizzard!

No shoveling ever became necessary, and no real inconvenience ever resulted. It continued to snow in varying amounts on and off all morning, but the afternoon was relatively tolerable… I doubt there was even half an inch accumulation… a bit more than a trace but just enough to say there was a snow, and no big deal at all to the locals… well, beyond being a topic of conversation, of course.

Gordon’s back yard

Wimps’ backyard fifteen miles from Gordon’s…
pic sharing

Gordon and I drove over to Wimps’ place in Knoxville, so he could help with some brake stuff on Wimp’s van. Wimp’s spouse, Margie, made dinner for us, and… WOW! That was one bodacious meal! I was so focused, I plumb forgot to take any pictures… my bad…

Food down this way has a reputation for being rather out of sync with contemporary notions of healthy dining, but I gotta tell ya, it just don’t get no better taste-wise!!! Salmon patties (one of her extra special specialties), corn on the cob, English peas, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, and biscuits… Dang! I’m drooling all over my keyboard now…

This morning early it was raining again, and the snow was all gone… An hour later it had stopped raining, and it appeared to be wanting to clear off. Later, the sun actually began winking at us. Is it possible this is one of those times the forecasters got it right? Wow! Another wonder for me to observe!!! Not entirely, however, they had predicted two inches would drop on us, and of course they also used, although sparingly this time, the ‘D’ word somewhere in there…

The plan is for Gordon to test ride our girl today and see where we stand. I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but not because I have any doubts about his ability to diagnose problems and fix them… It’s just that we never found anything we can point to as a specific, definite cause for the noise I was hearing…

Could it be this is one of those ‘Shortleg’ things, where the further away from home we travel, the more phantom noises and imagined ailments we think are occurring? Perhaps along with my heightened state of… ‘perplexity’ recently, there actually is nothing wrong, and that I’m just simply overly sensitive to any and all things going on around me… Nah, there was definitely an ominous noise, and something had to cause it, so… Good ol’ Lucky-13 will figure it out, and life will return to normal… mechanically speaking…

Lucky-13, HJ, and a stranger loading up ALI for the rescue from Nashville to the Valk clinic in Clinton…

Home, time to stoke the fire!

Our girl on the operating table… yet again!

Wheel bearings arrived and were installed… now waiting to take her for a test-ride.

As for my own recent health ‘perplexity’, I’d been told of a website provided by Vanderbilt University Hospital, where I could log-on and view my own test results. While my doctor hasn’t called me yet (it is a weekend after all), I took a chance and took a peek…

Dangerous and confusing stuff for an uninformed lay-person to delve into for many reasons! Not just because of all the foreign terms and references used, but because we have no idea at all what might be normal for anyone in our age group.

Am I on the brink of a visit to the crematorium, or am I doing OK? Bewildering phrases, terms from some unknown tongue, measurements made in forms unfamiliar and with no idea what is ‘normal’… what does it all mean? Is it serious enough to consider a visit to the ‘Hemlock Society’ website, or can I breathe a sigh of relief? Heck, I read the report several times ,and I was still unsure of my status… then…. The old light bulb over my head went off!

Troutdude, among his many, many contributions to the well-being of our girl and her rider, made yet another without ever knowing it… Yep, once upon a time he’d advised me, that, according to him, when you don’t understand something, then GTS! WOW! Everything I didn’t have a clue about was there, and I eventually stumbled across enough info to feel at least a bit better about my condition. Not as good as staying at a Holiday Inn Express, of course, but far better than things had been just an hour before! GTS is definitely the way to go with stuff like this!!!

Certainly, I could still be lost on all of this, and I could easily be misreading what I think I now better understand… and, grossly misleading myself... BUT! Near as I can tell, anyway, it appears to this ignorant non-clinician, that there is no mention of cancer being anywhere else outside the prostate! Wishful thinking? Perhaps. An error on my part? Most definitely a strong possibility. News to take a wee bit of comfort in…? Yeah, that last one is the possibility I’m going with for now…!!! And for now anyway, things can return to some semblance of normalcy…

Bruce my friend, encouraging news (we hope). I know all about GTS, and I understand that sometimes it does not provide the full enlightenment you hoped for but at least some encouragement.
Keep positive thoughts my dear friend and keep on trucking.
Hope all is well with Ali also, never like when I know something is amiss and no one can find what is wrong. Lets hope Gordo can find it and fix it.
Take care and keep those great "Bruce Chronicles" coming  cooldude

Yuri,

Waiting on things to dry out a bit more, so Gordon can take our girl for a test run... Then, we'll see what comes next.   Smiley   I'm also still in limbo regarding my 'uniquely masculine anomaly'... and waiting for that to move ahead.   Undecided   Yeah, the news I think I deduced from the report did offer some veiled, modest encouragement, so I am letting that stoke my enthusiasm at the moment.   Cool   Stiff upper lip and all that jazz... Thanks for the reply and comments!

Rob,

Thanks a bunch! Same to ya!!! Hang tough, buddy... sometimes that's the best we can do...

That brought back a wave of memories.  When I was a very young lad we would sometimes go acrpss town (East Texas) to visit and eat at my grandmother's.  It seems she always fixed salmon patties.  I loved them. I can still hear her pronouncing the internal l.

I know there are foods that are fancier and, no doubt, better for me but to this day I dearly love salmon patties.  She also always served sweet tea but diabetes and age have moved me away from that.

Sounds like the best of times, Bruce.

Well, whatchagonna do? Gordon had expressed serious misgivings and doubts about the 'repairs?' performed on our girl... since nothing he'd replaced or found (actually only suspected possible causes) had appeared defective or showing any evidence of being the source of any problems... Turns out he was right... doggone it all anyhow!

I'd waited until the 11:00am checkout time to leave the motel this morning... because it was 22F with frost on our girl's cover when I first stepped out for my initial check on things... Since we were in no particular hurry, and we had until Thursday evening to make it home before the forecast rain, I chose to take my sweet time, dawdle some, and leisurely make our departure in a warmer part of the day... So far, so good.

Might be wise to delay departure just a bit...

Empty stall.. at last!

Gordon had test rode our girl the day before, and so had I. Neither of us had detected any problems, and the noise I'd heard before along with the vibration I'd felt were completely absent, so... all thumbs-up and Hi-Oh-Silver--Away, we rode southwards towards Florida and away from the shivering zone! She sure felt good, too, and I was basking in the warm glow of that special feeling of satisfaction most of us experience when a vexing issue has been successfully addressed. Then...

As we were cruising through the busiest part of Chattanooga, I noticed that vibration again when decelerating. My imagination? Had the preemptive replacements of rear wheel bearings and U-joint been wishful thinking? Surely it was the road surface causing it this time... Nope, soon enough there was a vibration all the time, accel, decal, cruise, coast... constantly. Dang! Sure hope I can make it out of the worst of the traffic before I have to pull off...

Just as we had run the gauntlet of downtown Chattanooga and were coming out the west side of town on I-24 approaching Nickajack, still in heavy traffic and not completely out of the woods yet, a not-particularly-loud noise was heard. Sounded like something had busted up or given way, and undeniably sounded like something that required immediate attention... I coasted over to the emergency lane to see if anything was leaking fluids or falling off... Nope.

I remounted, started her up again, put her in gear, let out the clutch, and... the engine continued to run, but she did not move... not even budge a silly smidgeon! No more noise, though, and no vibration. Well, shucks... Maybe the clutch?

Heck, I dunno, I ain't no mechanic! The week before I had diagnosed our problem as the universal joint, but, with hindsight, that obviously wasn't the issue... I remembered Gordon and Troutdude chatting on the phone discussing the possibility of the problem actually being the clutch, or... the transmission...?! With no small amount of anxiety, I called Gordon...

My good friend and very recent host was on the lake fishing, and not expecting to return until dark (this was around 2pm.) He told me that HJ had called wanting to see me before I left, so I should call him, as he'd said he wasn't doing anything important that day anyhow...

I called HJ and informed this must be his lucky day, as I had an opportunity for him to see me after all! I went on to explain my circumstance and inquire if he'd be able come get me! What a great guy! He, along with Gordon, had come for us only the week before in Nashville!

He said he would, and his friend Bill was available to come, too, and help with loading, etc. I told him where we were, and that I was going to call a tow service to get us someplace safer, and that I'd let him know where we wound-up. We had a plan... and I had a new challenge...

After I'd called the tow service, and while I was talking to Troutdude, a state trooper pulled up behind me, flashing blue lights and all, and he patiently waited for me to get off the phone... BTW, it was very difficult hearing and being heard because of all the traffic, particularly big trucks whizzing by...

He was just checking to see that I was OK and if he could help... Really nice guy! After I assured him everything was taken care of and explained my plan, he smiled, wished me luck, and drove off... No ticket, license check or anything. WOW! I've heard of riders actually getting a ticket in situations like that in other states!

A short time later, an Emergency Response Team truck pulled in behind us. The very nice lady was just checking to see if I needed anything, or if she could help. WOW! I made a mental note to do all of my breaking down only in Tennessee from now on!!! Ummm, maybe not... I'm sure even Gordon and HJ would eventually get tired of that!

The tow truck arrived even sooner than I had expected, and we loaded her up. I'd told the rep at Rescue Plus to have the tow truck driver take us to Athens, TN, so we'd be closer to HJ and Bill and save them having to drive through Chattanooga in late afternoon traffic... plus safe them 50-60 miles of distance. Worked like a charm! I called HJ and told him where we'd be...

I was sitting at the counter in Shoney's having a well-deserved glass of sweet tea, when HJ and Bill arrived. We loaded our girl and her shell-shocked rider and headed back to Clinton, TN, and the Valk clinic of Lucky-13... again... Man, this is getting old for us, and I'm sure for poor ol' Gordon, too, about having us back again so soon... heck, the joy of seeing me ride away hadn't even worn off yet!!!

Diagnostics will have to wait for Troutdude to arrive next week. In the meantime... well, I guess there are always reruns of the Andy Griffin Show to keep me busy... Nah, lots of stuff I can do... even ride! Yep, HJ has offered me the use of his Valk, if needed... Any wonder why I'm so proud to be a member of this 'family'?!!!

Well dog gone it all Bruce. I remember trying to diagnose intermittent problems at the phone factory.  Sure was difficult to pin something down from customers who were not good at describing the situation in terms that you could understand and was not happening at that very moment.  There was a time when I felt that same thing sort of in the footpegs on the Interstate.  Turns out it was indeed the u-joint that had a bit of play.
One thing for sure now that it has reared it's ugly head the way it did.  The source of the vibration should be easier to pinpoint.  I'm kind of leaning toward the differential/pumpkin area but then again few have clicked over the amount of miles that ALI has in it's lifetime.
Hope your visit back in Clinton is short and sweet.

Terry,

That same comparison flashed through my mind about the intermittent problems being relayed by customers to the tech with vague descriptions of the problem,... only this time, I was the customer and Gordon the tech! As was the case with our former occupations, the more complex the equipment, the more difficult and elusive determining solutions become... Alas...

Now about Gordon... He had out the manual last night, and he did the GTS thing extensively. I wearied around 12:30am and retired for the evening... or what was left of it. He was still earnestly reading away and searching for ideas... and a more comprehensive understanding of what are new issues for him. I have no idea how late he stayed up...

Gawd, he has way more tenacity than most when it comes to questions and unknowns where mechanical problems exist! He truly exemplifies the proverbial horse with the bit in his teeth, and there being no turning him! He is amazing, and while I am inclined to feel guilty about all of this bother on our account... I also am able console myself a wee bit with the knowledge that that is just his nature, and he'd be doing it anyway...

Truth be told, what I find frustrating, nerve jangling, and enormously inconvenient, he finds to be intriguing and challenging with the major reward of 'understanding' stealthily hiding out in the vast unknown, there waiting to be found! Simply put, he cannot rest with unresolved issues and unknowns lingering! Unlike the POWs building a bridge over that river in Burma during WWll, this boy is happy in his work!!!

Bruce, did you try moving the bike under power in something other than 1st gear? That could/would narrow it down a bit if it moves in 2nd or 3rd from a stop. Another thought....something I ran into years ago on a 1200 Wing; the damper spring on the output shaft assembly. I found in my situation if that broke, or the dogs it engages, the final driven gear won't. In any case, kinda sounds internal, hope not. Keep us informed so when we hit 615k on our Valks we'll all know what to watch out for. (Propositions I like, prepositions I don't. And to think just one letter can make you a good linguist or author....or not Grin)

Bruce,
Well doggon it man!  Hate to hear that Ali is still ailing.  It sounds like the repairs are going to be a bit more labor intensive than normal.

I bet your wanderlust is really churning now.  On the other hand, it sounds like you are going to have 2 of the top Valkyrie surgeons taking care of Ali and that means that when you do get back on the road with Ali she should be in very good shape.  I hope the surgery and recovery are swift and fairly painless.

On the biological “man” issue, Mural and I are still thinking of you wishing for the best.  I hope you have the peace of mind to just do what needs to be done as it is revealed to you and to not spend too much time worrying about dark possibilities.  Worry always focuses us on the darkest possibilities even though much brighter outcomes are more often the case.

I sure hope one day I could take unfortunate circumstances and find the positive outcome as you do. Tennessee is a "fortunate" state to experience a mechanical failure,
