California considers taxing text messages to fund cell service for the poor.

California regulators have devised a plan to fund cell-phone service for the state’s poor by taxing text messages.

The plan, which was first reported by the Mercury News, will be voted on next month by the California Public Utilities Commission.

Business groups, including the Bay Area Council, the California Chamber of Commerce, and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, have pushed back against the proposal, which they estimate will cost wireless consumers $44.5 million in additional fees each year.

“It’s a dumb idea,” said Jim Wunderman, president of the Bay Area Council. “This is how conversations take place in this day and age, and it’s almost like saying there should be a tax on the conversations we have.”

IMHO at this point I almost wonder if they're INTENTIONALLY trying to drive people out of the state so they'll flood The Republic of Texas even faster and bring us down to their level...

Sad, such a beautiful state otherwise...

Yep...weed out all the headstrong entrepreneurial people and have the globalists control a state populated by smurfs with no cajones. Trouble is when the big tech monopolies get chopped up by some new  regulatory commission, where will Kali get the tax money to operate this marxist criminal enterprise.

I helped my son move out of California last summer.  He lived there for 5 years, and whenever I visited him I always thought to myself '50 years ago, this place must have been a paradise'.

But not anymore.  Unfortunately many of the California refugees have moved here to Colorado.  They've helped to elect a California-like legislature and governor.  We're well on the way to being a California clone.  Years ago we were warned about this with a popular bumper sticker that said 'Don't Californicate Colorado'.

Actually quite insidious. Tax text messages to fund cell phone service for the poor who will then be taxed on their text messages. The poor will enjoy that.

just thinking reading this of our own small town after getting my property tax bill in the mail today.  I about was floored usually goes up 100 bucks or LESS EVERY year since 1993 or even a few years it went down just a smidge.  Well, the village portion of the bill went up OVER 30% vs. the rest just a smidge, equating to near 14% rate increase vs. last year which is unheard of NEVER in 25 years living here has it gone up more than 100 bucks, now went up OVER 400 dollars this year due to village spendthrifting apparently.  maybe I need to write a lovely letter in our local paper indicating as such which outta get me either kicked out of town or thrown on the village board maybe even President?

Am sure there will be several dozens town folks going to the village board telling them to quit spending money like it was growing on trees.  Who gets a 14% pay increase per year at their jobs?  guessing no one.

All those high taxes principally benefit the ruling G as they spend them (heavily, and in various ways) to buy votes to stay in office, and increase in size and power.  Any benefit to the poor is merely ancillary (so long as they stay bought, which history shows, they do).  There ought to be a RICO Act violation in there somewhere.

And beware of all taxes claimed to be earmarked for special (often wonderful) purposes.  It's my experience they mostly end up in the general budget.  (See Social Security withholding)

Let me tell you how it will be

There's one for you, nineteen for me

'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five per cent appear too small

Be thankful I don't take it all

'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street,

If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat.

If you get too cold I'll tax the heat,

If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet.

Don't ask me what I want it for

If you don't want to pay some more

'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Now my advice for those who die

Declare the pennies on your eyes

'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

And you're working for no one but me.

If our Governor has anything to say about it, our reduction in State taxes is gone for at least the next 4 years. Worse yet, he plans on getting rid of the current State fiscal protections that prohibit local leaders from enacting huge increases in property taxes without referendum approval votes. The new Gov says that will give local governments more "freedom" to run themselves. Yes, freedom from the taxpayers getting in the way.

Meanwhile, thank goodness we don't have a globalist President;

KATOWICE, Poland (AP) The Latest on the U.N. climate talks in Poland and other climate news (all times local):

2:50 p.m.

A prominent researcher is proposing establishing a "climate passport" for people driven from their homes by the impact of global warming.

Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, founder of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, said Thursday the passport could be modeled on a similar certificate given to refugees of Russia's civil war in the 1920s.

The so-called Nansen passport was later extended to other people who were made stateless after their citizenships were revoked. It helped hundreds of thousands of people to find refuge elsewhere in the world.

Schellnhuber's proposal, made on the sidelines of the U.N. climate talks in Poland, is likely to face resistance from rich countries concerned about the possibility of millions of refugees heading their way in the coming decades.

I wonder how many people notice that their current phone bills already have a Federal tax that goes for "other peoples' phone bills"? Or a similar one on cable/satellite bills to pay for others' cable/satellite bills? I'm guessing people who receive the benefits of the CAncer text tax won't actually have to pay it themselves. That's how perpetual wealth distribution works.

Didn’t read how the bill is written. If they tax the sender or the receiver, or both. If the receiver is taxed I’d be great fun to text all the politicians in California. If only the sender is taxed then all of us outside of California could text the politicians with a question that needs an return text. I wouldn’t think they can tax a text coming from out of state.

I see where California wants to have "Zero Emission" busses by  2040

"The California Air Resources Board voted unanimously to require that all new buses be carbon-free by 2029. Environmental advocates project that the last buses emitting greenhouse gases will be phased out by 2040."

Do these guys have a clue where the "energy" comes from for these "Green" busses?

There is no such thing, at least today" as a Zero Emission vehicle.  Well unless they only get their batteries recharged from wind or solar stations, which I doubt will be happening.  Or I guess they could rely on hydro only energy.

Its all about the right "words".  Today, zero emission vehicles do not exist.  They only transfer their emission to the places that actually generate the energy they use.

They can make those green buses, zero emissions work.

And provide employment to all their millions of sanctuary illegals.... pushing the buses around town.  Grin

With 50 for each bus, they ought to make 3-4 mph anyway.

Pay minimum wage, but save on all the fuel.  Win win.

(If you think this is insensitive.... go ahead and think that, I don't mind.)

Yes, just saw that this morning.  Appears that the someone figured out that texting was a form of communication and as such cannot be taxed since the tax would amount to limiting free speech.

Does it not ever concern those in California that they seem to be totally out of touch with the basic underpinnings of this country i.e. the First Amendment in this case.

I doubt there's any free speech violation involved, just a good excuse to back out of a stupid taxing idea. We are taxed on communication all the time currently, including sales tax on our cell bills.

If they would actually ticket driving texters, they would have more money than they dreamed. Plus they might save a few people in the process. This could go nation wide.
