My wife's hearing (and speech) is slowly going away. We haven't been able to watch TV in the same room for a few years but now it has become almost unbearable for me since she has to crank up the volume so high. In fact I have to move to the other side of the house after shutting the doors to our bedroom, then I can still hear her TV going in our bedroom. We're curious about those TV ears that kills the sound except for the headphones, that way I could watch at my level of volume and she at hers. Any suggestions, preferably reasonably priced?!

This is the best one there is. Have used it many times until my hearing aid manufacture came out with one the broadcast straight to my hearing aids.
you can use this one with the external speakers at whatever volume you want or you can turn them off and only use this device.

As long as the TV has an audio output jack (maybe with a headphone symbol on it), any simple headphones should work, even cheapo walk-man headphones (though some block more sound than others out the sides of the earphones).  Also, most earphones have a pretty short cord, so you probably need an extension.

Now whether or not she can use the phones, and you can listen to the same TV on it's regular speakers at the same time is the big question.  With some equipment, plugging in phones disables the TV speakers, but I dunno about new fangled equipment.  And there's the volume issue; she may need the phones up too high for you to listen to the TV speakers at the same time, if they will both work at the same time.

Time to look at the back (or front) of your TV, and pull out the instruction manual (and if you go to the store, take the manual with you).

I think I'd find a cheapo pair of foam walk-man phones (5$) to experiment with before I did anything else.**

This is all cords, I know nothing about wireless.

I hated the guy on the airplane/subway who used these next to me, you had to listen to whatever he listed to.

I am similar to Pavlov's Dog, you play rap music next to me, I automatically want to kill you.

Go to Best Buy and buy regular headphones like the Sony that I have listed below. I have an older pair of  the Best Buy brand in a similar style and use them every night or I should say my wife does. You want regular headphones because of comfort, since after some time of wearing ear buds can get uncomfortable in your ears. Regular headphones can get uncomfortable also but it takes longer, so choose a real comfortable pair.  The other reason is if you are in the same room you will be able to hear the sound unless you have a full headphone. I cannot tell you what a distraction it is trying to sleep and hearing the tv from the sound that leaks around the headset. You dont get this with regular headphones. Unless you position the ear bud style headphones just right it will not sound as good as regular headphones either and it may be easier for your wife to use the regular headphones also.

Hookup is usually an RCA type of connection to the back of your tv that allows you to turn the volume all the way down and still hear the sound from your tv through the headphones so you will want to make sure they have their own volume control. If you hook them up with the 3.5 jack it will cut the sound to the speakers and you will not be able to hear the tv speakers unless you disconnect the plug. By hooking them up to the RCA you can hear any source like DVD that would play through the tv and and not have to hook them up at every use. Just put the headphones on the charging stand and turn up the tv volume and you are back to hearing the sound through the tv speakers.

I also sometimes while watching a movie want it blasting and my wife likes it a bit lower so I put on the headphones on and blast it and she listens to the tv while we both watch the same movie. You can have one or the other on or both, since the person with the headphones can regulate their own volume and you watching the tv can regulate yours. We both like most of the same movies but the action scenes I like loud and she likes it a bit softer.

Its very nice when I go to bed early and I give her the headphones and she can continue to watch tv and I can sleep.

I've been using the TV Ears from Radio Shack and Costco for years. They work great for me. My wife can listen at her normal volume, and I can adjust the sound on the TV Ears to what ever I want. A two wire( red/white) audio output is needed on the TV or a microphone is required.
