We just don’t always see them. They can hide in plain sight. They can walk amongst us unnoticed. They have a quiet, peaceful gait to themselves. I never saw them before. I was never looking for them. I was concerned of myself and not others. They are the opposite of me. They think of others before themselves. They boast not. They care not of pride or accolades. They are truly blessed, and we are blessed to have them among us. I never knew of this before. It is foreign to me. How can people put the care of others before themselves ? I don’t know. I doubt at this point in my life I ever will. But I am grateful for the Angels. They have touched me. And I am different now for it. What does it take to become one ? I’m sure I will never feel it. But they are here. As God is my witness, they are here. I guess they always have been. I’ve just been too self absorbed to see them. My time with the Angels will come to a close before long I’m afraid. I will never forget them.

Rob,
Powerful words, indeed! Thanks for expressing them... Like you, I've seen them, even benefited from their goodness... Also like you, I've come up short myself... Wish it were otherwise, but... Those who have experienced such encounters, however, are blessed beyond description. Again, thanks for the reminder!!!

I believe that there are more inherently good folks than there are bad folks in the world. The angels you speak of are less common. Service to others is their higher calling in life. I also am in awe of their works, and thank God for them!

You aren't saying anything I didn't already know. Only ashamedly I had forgotten. Thanks for reminding me. Hearts get hard like the seeds of corn that stand on the withered and dead stalk. The seed drops into the fertile ground and the rain (or tears) softens the hard kernel and begins life anew. It's the cycle of life.

I got a little emotional last night and needed to express myself. I’ve been in Alaska the last few days with my sister in ICU. Things have went downhill and I don’t really want to go into details yet, as I will likely break down and cry again. I just wanted to express the utter kindness and humanity the ICU nurses have been here. I wish I had just a teaspoon of their dignity.

All nurses are angels, and it takes a special one indeed to work in ICU.
Best wishes for your sister, and it sounds like she is being given the best care possible.

Yes, the best nurses are the ones who not only are technically competent, but who also care for the person lying in front of them. I am glad that you, your family, and your sister are being blessed by their compassion. I have someone very close to me that will be in your sister's position, likely within the next year, if not the next few months.
Before I read your reply to my question, I was writing the following:
Rob, the character traits you are describing are very familiar to me, in that I see them in those ones who have a rich, deep, and decades-long relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. They have, over the years, spend countless hours communing with God, praying and studying His Word, determining to put it into practise. They have sought to be continually filled by the Holy Spirit, making obedience to God's will their highest priority, having their minds changed to become more and more like the mind of Christ, as described in Philippians 2 (ESV):
"So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross."

My experience has given me time in the ICU, or, as they like to label it these days, the CCU.
ICU nurses are under more pressure than other assignments and they do tend to be completely giving and caring. Most ICU nurses are young because they burn out quickly.
When I was recovering from my most recent intense experience my wife asked me why I didn't like a doctor but preferred his nurse. I told her it wasn't totally the doctor's fault. They have busy schedules and they deal with patients with the objectives to tell the patients what they need to do, get them to accept the doctor's agenda and move on to the next patient. Nurses, the good nurses, care about what the patient wants and take time to listen to the patient.
I'm glad she has angels taking care of her. They are the angels in our lives.

Let me just say that if you ar lucky you have one living with you. My wife can cause me to bite nails into pieces sometimes, but that’s more a result of my character than hers. She takes care of me in so many ways and many times when she doesn’t feel great herself. I see my mother in her as my mother was just as devoted to my dad and I wonder if a lot of young wives coming up from different generations have these traits. I have been blessed.

When I read your post last night I had an idea what it was about....but could not put it in words in case I was wrong.... I figured it wasn't coming from an all is well place Yup there are some real selfless people in health care, I won't go into detail of our experience but they sure go beyond doing there job to care for the patient and the family visiting My thoughts are with you and your family

Thank you all. I don’t know why, but writing about it helps.
I have surrounded by some of the best people God has put on this planet in the last few days. As Willow said, they are mostly young women. Last night and though I had the most incredible older woman. I truly think God must hand pick these Angels for us.

Every job that I have had since I was 16 has involved nurses in one capacity or another.
And while many get into the profession for the wrong reasons and shouldn't be there, for others it is truly their life calling.
I have often said that a good nurse is worth their weight in gold.
Nurses are often overworked and under appreciated.
One thing that I would suggest is to see what type of recognition program the hospital has.
Around here it's called a "Daisy" Award.
Take the time and put any exceptional nurses in for it.
It really is a bigger deal than you think and it is appreciated.
I'm sorry that your sister isn't doing well, she and your family are in our prayers.

You could also give a nurse that goes beyond the call of duty a tip, money is always appreciated, inside a thank you note.
My mother was a nurse and she and I would go out to eat on the tips that she got. She was on the ICU, cardiac floor and emergency room. She became a nurse later in life and I helped her study for her exams. She started as a volunteer, then studied and became an LPN and then RN.

In my most recent experience in a trauma unit, I was extremely impressed with the ICU nursing staff. They were my best friends and angels in scrubs. Ironically, the one I wrote a letter of appreciation for and to was a former Navy SEAL. He was truly someone that cared and it showed in his words and actions.
My prayers go out to you and family.

If it wasn't for those nurses in CCU I don't believe I'd be here today. One night was particularly bad and this little gal literally sat there most of the night and held my hand, wiped my forehead with a cool cloth, helped me sip some water...holding it for me because I was too weak to hold it myself. An angel....absolutely.

Rob,, many prayers for you and your sister from Indiana. My wife is an RN in NICU for 41 years. I have seen her cry and also joyous over her work. She loves it, loves the people and the babies and cannot imagine ever retiring. I am lucky to be married to such a woman.

Thanks, Randy. Give your wife a hug from me. I’m ashamed to say, I’ve lived in my own little world all these years and never thought of these angels before. Truly extraordinary people indeed. Great topic Rob, so sorry about the circumstances that brought this topic about. I do hope it goes well for your sister, this has to be very hard.
I myself am blessed to be married to an ICU nurse angel. I do not get to see what she does - sometimes you can just see it in her eyes in the morning when she comes home, whether the patient was lost or saved. I was in the ICU 3 years ago for 2 days and witnessed how fantastic these angels are. I often take my wife for granted and I should not. She is far to nice a person for someone like me, especially in these long winter months when I let my disposition be regulated way too much by lousy weather, and very little sunshine. I will strive to be better.
