Don't threaten me with a good time

Greeneville, TN

« on: January 02, 2019, 12:17:08 PM »

The hunt...
We have all been there a time or two, whether it's looking for a new cage, bike, or anything in particular. Luckily technology has paved the way to stretch beyond the local area in finding that "great white buffalo."

The total loss of my beloved blue wing in November had me searching the typical forums; Ebay, Facebook, Craigslist, Cycletrader, etc. I knew I was going back to wing, no questions about that, but what model and year were still in question.

Color? Off course you have to narrow those searches down to color options? What other year did Honda make such a fine periwinkle? I could replace what I just had with another 2001, but the work involved to get it back to the standards ole blue was at would require  time and $ that I don't want to put in again. After much searching and inquiring, I stumbled across a great find on cycletrader.

A 2015 F6B Deluxe located in the burbs of Orlando Florida. I immediately sent an inquiry to the seller via the messaging system on cycletrader. Days go by without a response. Damn, I hope this isn't a scam! It didn't take long and I was on the phone with one of our own; Rick (Flask) in Florida begging for a favor. "Dude, If this feller calls me back I'm headed to the sunshine state, or could you take a gander to the Orlando area if needed and check this thing out for me?"

Luckily, a few days later I finally get a response from the seller and an attached phone number to call. Holy Sh!T... It's real! The sellers name was Josh, he recently moved from Iowa to Florida and was suffering from back issues from a car crash in the past and just couldn't ride anymore. The bike only had 3600 miles on it, bought it new in Iowa as his friend owned the Honda Dealership, complete with cobra exhaust and other trinkets of interest. Wow! I was drooling on the phone from excitement. I was back on the phone with Rick once again scheduling out a retrieval plan. The holidays are approaching, I have a week and some change off work, I'm headed your way dude!

Rick and Christy were kind enough to offer us shelter at there claimed "apartment" in Ingles Florida. I've heard many tails from Joe and others of this place. My significant other and I decided to depart on the 27th with trailer in tow for the 10hr drive to Florida.

I brought a set of Cobra 6-2-6 pipes I had installed on my wing at one time. Due to the trailer hitch attachment, I had to remove them and put the stock back on. Luckily my new to me F6B already had a set on it, so Rick and I worked out a deal. That night, we worked liked dogs trying to get 1 of the 6 baffles out that was stuck. Rick managed to fabricate a pipe that matched the curvature of the exhaust, making it easy to tap the baffle out. Once the baffles were out, we gave his wing a new look.

Cobra says these pipes are meant for the Gen 2 1800's (2012-2017) They bolt up just fine to the older wings but stick out from the bags a good 6 inches or so.

That night we had to come up with a plan for retrieval the next morning. The sellers residence was about 80 miles away, I obviously wanted to ride the bike back to Rick's place in the 70+ degree Florida weather, and Rick wanted to ride his bike as well.

Only one option remained..... Don't judge me

It's nice to experience the passenger perspective of things. Especially if you are a seasoned rider, I pressed down on my imaginary foot brake several times on the 80 mile jaunt over. That's not a dig at Rick's riding skills, just the reaction of a first time passenger Grin Grin Grin

Luckily I texted the seller before hand that I would be riding on the back of my friends wing (no homo) He at least had a good since of humor over it  Grin. It's crazy I commited to purchasing a new bike without even seeing it first. Luckily, it was everything described in the photo's and more.

Rick and I headed back after jawing with the sellers for a few minutes. That first ride was a great one, although the stock seat sucked, which is typical of Honda's  Sad

The next morning we loaded her up and strapped her down for the long haul back to God's Country. My significant other thought she would test out her riding skills from the trailer in tow

We got back to Greeneville TN around midnight on the 29th, a special thanks to Rick and Christy for the hospitality. I still miss ole blue, but glad to have another periwinkle in the stable.

RIP Ole' Blue

Hello New Blue

Great story Preston, thanks for telling it.   Congrats on the new bike. cooldude

Riding as a passenger on a bike takes courage; not courage from appearing queer, just courage from being on a bike and in no control of anything.

I won't do it, because it scares the hell out of me.  And if you ever do have to do it (like your bike broke down on a group ride), never tell your driver of your fear because he will makes things extra exciting for you.

Sorta' did the same thing as you back in 2011 or 2012 When I bought mine.
Sight unseen!
The owner and I had conversations and he had sent me plenty of photos during the approximate month that I kicked it around.
Finally settled on a price and I hopped a plane from Orlando to Austin Texas and he picked me up at the airport for the 70 mile ride South to his home.
That was December 12th, a Friday night, as I remember and it was cold.
There was a cold front and rain coming so I hopped on it for the very first time the next morning and headed home to Central Florida. Left that Saturday morning and by Sunday around the middle of the afternoon and 1100 miles later it was safe and sound in my garage!
That stuff is just plain fun to do and it kind of restores faith in the art of a handshake style deal.

Thanks brother, windshield is a windbender, also the monstrous tour pack on Flasks bike in the picture came with it as well, and got the F6B saddlebag liners. I already took the chrome frame covers and fender extender off. Most likely will do the same for the rear led lights. I prefer the gloss black ones over chrome. Or that smoked chrome  Tupperware that show chrome makes.

I'm sure nobody cares but I guess I'm too old to understand. One of the main reasons I liked my fat gurl was because of all the chrome on her and I spent big bucks adding more. I still prefer it that way.
Now it seems the trend is just the opposite in that a lot of people (maybe most) are going to just as much effort to get rid of the chrome. I understand the manufactures do it because chrome is so much more expensive. If they can sell units without chrome, more power to them.

What today's cars and motorcycles reminds me of is a cheap paint job in the past where the paint was sprayed on everything including molding without masking anything.

Understand that I'm not knocking anybody's preference, it's just not for me (yet). Roll Eyes

I prefer chrome also. But, I will say what Reb did with his old GW was pretty sharp. Like the old 2 stroke vs. 4 stroke debate back in our day. "Different strokes for different folks"

Meh,

Chrome belongs on a traditional Valkyrie, I don't care for the blacked out look on that specific model

Goldwing chrome is nothing more that chrome dipped ABS plastic. I'm not a fan of plasti-chrome, I prefer it painted  cooldude

Nice report Reb … As many know my friend Larry snapped his drive belt on his Yamaha up on The Dragon . It was ride b!tch  or walk for him. We had to ride right by all the Dragon photographers and also had Jimmy T and his wife Patti clickin' away with a camera as well. This event has left me scarred for life with even thoughts of seeking psychiatrist help. Should something like this mind-altering event ever happen again ( and I pray it does not ) I have a new rule.

" No Nut To Butt "  My thoughts are with Rick ( Flask ) hoping he can deal with this without seeking counseling .

As a photographer in another life I had to ride nut to butt quite a few times.

The best butt to butt  Shocked was riding on the back of a Guzzi along the coast of the Med from Nice to Monte Carlo photographing a guy on his way to India riding a Triumph with sidecar.

Worst nut to butt was riding from London to Scotland. 300 miles on the back of a Suzuki GS1000.

Periwinkle Preston,

Congrats on the new handle I've just given you. Also, congrats on the great looking scooter acquisition!!! The adventure of locating, then arranging, and finally executing the plan was most interesting, and we all appreciate you sharing the tale with us!

Rick and Christi always come through, and they've aided and/or bailed out many of us over the years! As for riding 'nutz to buttz', well, most of us have done that; although, few of us are willing to admit it! All part of the adventure, of course, and part of the great memory that will stay with you a very long time...

I'm looking forward to viewing that scoot up close and personal, so keep it shinny and in-tact for that eventual event... Just kidding, go enjoy that thing and do what you do so well!!! Again, congrats on your continuing adventures in life...

Looks great! I know you will love the handling!

An Ultimate seat for me was one of my first purchases on my F6B and my subsequent Wing. Another favorite accessory was changing the headlights over to LED. They made a dramatic difference, I purchased mine from The Electrical Connection.

I'm bouncing between an Ultimate and a Corbin right now. Luckily the PO installed LED's in the headlight with a bypass so the fog lights stay on when switching to high beams. They really do make a difference at night.

Turtle - I think certain fog light kits for the Wing/F6B come with the jumper used to bypass that high beam shutoff. I'm not sure if the jumper is sold separately. I'm sure someone out there sells a plug and play option.
