Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: January 03, 2019, 08:30:02 AM »

It's like this... I've been holed up in Nohead City for two weeks now, with only one day-ride to our credit... I have been dinning very well, though, as my cousin/brother is one fine cook/chef! Rain, not just here but between here and anywhere else, has kept us hunkered down and me twiddling my  thumbs... TV just ain't what it used to be, and... well, there ya have it... the dreaded combo of growing boredom,  cabin fever, and ride withdrawals...

I had this notion come over me after talking to Crazyhorse yesterday... He'd told me of a 'chicken run' planned for this coming weekend at the General Store in Lorman, MS. Shucks! I can't make it, on account of I can't leave here before Saturday... Yeah, I could leave now, of course, if I were willing to brave the elements, but... I just can't conjure-up the mojo for 'hardship riding' anymore... And, I do have a little time on my hands…

I got a call from the doctor’s office yesterday, too… I have a pre-op appointment for blood withdrawal and instructions/information scheduled for January 23rd, and the actual surgery on February 28th. Ordinarily the pre-op thing would be the day before any gut-cutting and gland extraction event, but we scheduled it this way so if a cancelation occurs, my surgery can be moved up to an earlier date… Yeah, I’m still rather eager to get on with all of this…

Anyway, the weather looks promising enough to hold out the possibility of riding back to Nashville for the pre-op thing, so that basically means I have maybe several weeks plus for some riding, with only that little detour to Vandy to be made on the 23rd.  Naturally I’ll need to show up in the car with a sidekick along for the surgery… Until then, however, riding has risen to the top of my to-do list!

I’d also had a call from JP lately, and well… With all this activity and with all my wanting to see everybody… well, an idea sprung-up in my ol’ noggin’. So, I did what I often do at times like this… I called Troutdude and bared my soul… He, naturally, had a solution in mind…

Why don’t I just mention all of this on the board and propose another get-together the following weekend. As a fall back, we could always do another ‘chicken run’ to Lorman, or we could do something else exotic and interesting, depending upon the preferences and suggestions of potential participants… Grand idea!

So, I’m tentatively thinking I’ll be ambling more or less westward towards Lorman, MS, for some fine fried chicken at the general Store the next Saturday or Sunday a week from this coming weekend. If anybody is interested in hooking-up that weekend for some adventure, riding, dinning, BS-ing, etc., then please sound-off on this thread… If there is none, then I’ll just do what I usually do and see where I wind-up and do whatever presents itself… Either way, I’m really getting charged up and ready to roll!!!

They say my new U joint should be here Saturday.  If that happens, I should have my bike back together sometime Monday.  Hmmm.....let me know as you head west just which way you are meandering.

Avanti,

Yeah, and I confess to having visions of seeing folks I haven't seen in a very long time! Geeez, I really wish that could happen!!! But, stuff happens and everyone has a life outside riding, so... Oh well, at a minimum I'll be in the wind and doing what I love, so no need to feel sorry for me...

Ron,

Yeah, it would be great to see you munching on some fine chicken and carrying-on about riding stuff... Oh well, in due course we'll do exactly that! Thanks for the interest, and I'm proud of you for already figuring to return to the road!

Jerry,

Will do, my friend! Hope you can swing it so you can venture out and do some cruising and adventurizing with me! Some mighty cool memories to be made out yonder!!! No plans at the moment, but I can narrow it down a bit for you... somewhere south of I-40, north of the Rio Grande River, west of I-95, and east of I-5... Hope that helps! Actually, I'll most likely be in Alabama sometime next Monday... riding back roads and drinking it all in!

Barry,

Sure would be nice if you could swing it! Man, I ain't seen you in quite a spell, so we do have some catching up to do! The weather forecast looks downright inviting, so it  would be plumb sinful to waste such a weekend not being in the wind... We'll be looking for you!!!

...but we scheduled it this way so if a cancelation occurs, my surgery can be moved up to an earlier date… Yeah, I’m still rather eager to get on with all of this…

Heh...I sure understand that! When I found a surgeon that could actually *fix* my shoulders...(three others were proposing fixes for my "catastrophic" damage that were downright debilitating), and had my questions answered to my satisfaction...I said, "When can we do this?" (the first shoulder).

He said, "How's Thursday sound?"
"Let's do it."

Yes, the long-term outcome and whether I could regain my full function was a worry, but what's funny was that ALL the worry/concern about the surgery itself was focused on it getting postponed or put off...I just wanted it done so I could know where I stood and start progressing.

...Until then, however, riding has risen to the top of my to-do list!

Mine too...and I believe it's time. Unfortunately I've gotta fix the durn machines first...these mistress-things don't take too kindly to being ignored since August...a tactical error on my part, but somewhat unavoidable...

The good news is I think I actually have the strength/motion in both shoulders to the point I can actually do the work to 'em...

(sigh, as soon as I can push THAT to the top of the list that is) Smiley

Y'all be safe! (or at least fun!)

Barry,

I'll have to do some looking and planning on a location for us. On previous trips we've stayed in both Natchez and Vicksburg, but the motels we stayed in have both gone downhill quite a bit... so... I'll need to find someplace else in either case. Also, I don't have strong feelings either way on which city to stay in, so I'm thinking the best location would be the one that receives suggestions/requests from any who might be thinking of attending... Do you have a preference?

There really is no thought-out plan for anything so far, as this whole idea just sprung-up in the last day or two. The possibilities of things to do are staggering in number, so... Natchez has some interesting tourist sites to visit, and the Natchez Trace begins nearby. Vicksburg has the battlefield location and the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich restaurant south of town... Of course, there are other places within a hundred miles that might offer anything from Cajun food to BBQ, and other odd places to visit...

I'm open to anything you might want to propose... or anyone else thinking of coming might have in mind... There are many in Louisiana, several in Mississippi, and some from other states like Alabama and Tennessee who might take a notion to pop in, so catering to their distance and time limitations might come into play.

A well thought-out event with times, dates, locations, and activities all lined out is the best way to do these sorts of things I know, but... I like the loosey-goosey, 'whatever' kind of thing... I'm starting out with a blank slate, and we can write or draw upon it anything we want... If I receive no input, then I'll just make choices and set things in motion... Democracy gives everyone a voice, but it sure is messy, ain't it...?

If it comes down to it, I'll most likely find us a place in Natchez and lock onto either Saturday or Sunday for the meet date to dine... in Lorman. That is a good place, easy to get to, and can handle groups of very small to rather large without reservations or any bother... In other words, as the opportunities for change and custom tailoring become smaller, I'll arbitrarily pick the details and do the leg work... In the meantime, we can make this into pretty much whatever we'd like it to be! Any thoughts?

DDT

P.S. I'm actually beginning the ride 'over there' this Saturday (in the morning)! I'm not going directly there, however, and I'm in no particular hurry either, so my route will be determined 'on-the-fly' based upon whim and inclination at any given moment... No telling where I might be by next Friday, but that evening I will be within a few hours ride of the General Store in Lorman... assuming that's where we actually agree to meet any who might want to join us...

Daniel,

I knew if anybody would understand the psychology involved with all of this, it would be you with the keen insight and thoughts on the whole thing... I've found it interesting to study myself lately, and to wonder at how I've reacted, worried, and thought generally about things and their implications... But, the most surprising discovery has been my 'priorities' and focus. I, like you, seem far less worried about the usual things one would expect to be the primary concerns, and more thoughtful about timing, delays, and the inconvenience involved! And, of course, the impact on others by all of this...

Riding is always at or near the top of my to-do list! Yeah, all of this will intrude on my ability to throw a leg over our girl at the drop of a hat, and it will put ALI and me on the sideline for a time... Between now and then, however, I'm wanting to pack as much adventure into this narrow time slot as I can, then to focus intelligently and appropriately on my recovery so the upcoming 'pause' will be no longer than necessary and prudent... the same sort of things you're doing!

I hope our surgeries go well, and that we can both have our knees back in the breeze soon... Until then, at least we have this venue for venting and sharing thoughts... Thanks for sharing yours with me.

Barry,

OK, then... Saturday just became the day! I'll get busy tonight or tomorrow (hitting the road in a few minutes) and find us a motel, etc. Really looking forward to this, and now even more... See ya on or before Saturday!

Apparently there is something going on that weekend in Natchez... fewer rooms available and those that are tend to be a tad on the pricy side... Vicksburg appears to be the better location, price & availability-wise, so I've made a couple of calls...

I'll be staying in Vicksburg both Friday and Saturday evenings, and riding to the General Store in Lorman, MS, on Saturday (1/12/19) for lunch. I haven't locked in on a motel yet... sort of wanting an idea how many might be coming... So far, there is just Big Wolf and yours truly, and most likely Big Head... Any other takers? If not, then the Best Western Motel will probably get the nod...

Keith,

Sorry you can't make it, but... I know how that is. It would have been fun seeing the expression on your face as you told of us your adventure riding over, and then seeing your reaction to the 'experience' of chicken at the store!!! Yeah, let's definitely do it another time... until then...

Decisions...

OK, it will be a chicken run to Lorman, MS... at the General Store right on US HWY 61, south of Vicksburg and north of Natchez. It will be for lunch on Saturday 1/12/19. I will be riding down from Vicksburg, where I'll be staying at the Best Western Inn on Frontage RD., Friday and Saturday evenings, then heading out in some direction on Sunday morning...

Anybody who'd like to join in for any or all of that would be most welcome. Big Wolf (Jerry McFarland) will be riding with me, and Big Head has expressed interest, although his participation has not been confirmed... Any other takers? Don't be shy, I assure you the ride and experience will be worth it!!!

Well shucks! I no sooner finalized the details and made the last post... when, out of the blue, I got a call and everything changed for me! I'm heading back to Florida in the morning to take care of a thing or two, and then I'll be dealing with doctor things soon, so... Looks like my big ride has been abbreviated.

Nothing major or life-threatening going on here, but it is important and something that I need to do. So, I reckon I'll see y'all when I see ya... Sorry for the curve balls...

Ride safe and be well my friend. I'm glad it's nothing gravely serious. Life is made up of curve balls. I imagine you can take on Roger Clemmon's best.  cooldude
