My first real day off in almost a month. I had big plans. But I know myself pretty well, and I didn't really think I'd follow thru. I had the dreaded clutch rivet issue about a month ago. Got the parts a couple weeks back, but life has got in the way and I'm a lot lazier than I used to be. Thought maybe I'd tear down the bike today. But as far as I got was opening the box of parts, inspecting them, and taking them to the garage.  Shocked Baby steps. Mostly laid around watching the news, eating, being generally lazy. But I discovered a few things.

  1) designers and engineers must be mostly women these days. I developed a pretty good ignorance of the washer and dryer buzzers over the last 50 years. I have pretty much been able to only notice 1 buzzer per day. These new contraptions with their little subliminal tunes have suckered me in all day.  tickedoff

  2) I discovered I can watch news all day. And my wife can only watch 15 minutes. Then it's off to 90 Day Fiancé.

  3) I can survive on whatever is in the fridge, freezer, pantry just fine without leaving the house.

  4) to avoid body sores alternate between the recliner and the couch every 2 or 3 hours.

  5) I'm going to be forced to get with it soon. Driving the truck for a month is wearing on my mental state.

  6) I'm going to need to come up with a regimen soon. Retirement is looking sooner than later, I can imagine much recliner time without a plan in place.

Thanks, Dennis  cooldude I can use all the help I can get. I think the last clutch I rebuilt on a motorcycle was a Yamaha 350 back in '74. Matt, a kind member in New Hampshire was kind enough to send me a spare clutch basket and tools to use. (This club rocks !) Chances are I might hit you up for some advice though. Thanks  cooldude

You got that.  Just get out of the lazy a$$ mode.

I admit, the lazy a$$ mode hits me more than I like these days.

I got a chrome fender extension for the I/S about 6 months ago, still waiting for me to install it.

Just a couple of years ago, that sucker would have sat on the shelf about an hour before I ripped into it.

I did take it out of the packaging  Roll Eyes

Same here. I've got a nice set of OEM saddlebags, muffler chrome, and a new trunk mount plate for my Givi that are still in the wrap. I did install the new hand deflectors though....verrrry nice. (thanks Craig)

For the past three years I've been so busy with stuff, and will continue to be for the next year or so, that I'm looking forward to eventually giving my garage a thorough tidying, which will allow me to find stuff I've purchased for the projects I want to do (rather than the ones I need to do).  I'm sure some of my discoveries will lead to me thinking, "Oh, yeah... I forgot I was planning to do that!"  E.g., I have a couple of boxes of second-hand four-tone Buick/Cadillac horns that I planned to make into kits to sell for installation on Valkyries.

The most important part of this job is not pushing the drill bit into your tire.

I have the bits to sevice the final drive, 2x the wider rear wheel bearings to fit..... and so many other vehicles to service...... but I have hit the wall, got lots done over my "break" but the last few days stole all motivation so know  the feeling Flat & lazy mode ATM

All the best when you do find the motivation to sort that clutch Smiley

Why do something today that you can put off until tomorrow?  Procrastinator’s creed.

I finally installed the new Headwinds light bar that I bought in 2010 this past August while I essentially rebuilt the entire bike.  It had been sitting up on a lift in my garage since May, 2010 just before my spinal fusion.  Went through all three bikes to get them roadworthy last summer.  I think sitting idle is the worst thing for the bikes.

It sure is easy to let things slide...

Rob,

All the pieces will fit together in time... Main thing is to accept reality and roll with the flow... I've hit my own stride, and now naps, riding, chores, whatever, all work themselves out and life is good... Don't worry, learn to 'think outside the box', and more than anything... to forgive yourself for over-indulgence!

You'll do fine... Now, remember above all else that I ride through that area on occasion, so you do need to be ready so we can hook-up! I'm not going to be able to ride to Alaska every time I want to see y'all! Roanoke I can probably swing, but... just saying...

Embarrassed that's the rather embarrassing part. I have let my blue bike sit for so long without an occasional ride, that the carbs are gummed up to the point I need to remove and clean them. I'm thinking of just draining the carbs after I get them straightened out this time.

Owch!  Shocked  No rather about it, dude.  Can't believe you admitted to it. Smiley

Now you got two projects, once you get out of lazy a$$ mode.

Grin no biggie. Everybody here knows I'm a dumbass. I'm only semi lazy this morning. 2 and half hours later, and all I've got done so far is removed the center stand, the kickstand, and associated hoses and such. I'm stuck on removing the clutch bleeder tube. Can't get a wrench or socket on it without removing the center cover. And I'm too lazy for that.  Smiley Having lunch and then going to Harborfreight for a cheap 10mm wrench that I can grind down. I'm certainly not the man I used to be.  Angry

I had to clean it up with some carb cleaner. Thanks again for the use of your tools. They will come in handy.  cooldude

Finally got her buttoned up. Took me 3 days to do the job, I'm sure it could be done in 1 day by a competent mechanic. But, that's not me.  Undecided I want to thank all the members who have posted about this job previously, but I especially want to thank Matt for the use of his clutch basket and compression tools. They helped a ton. I put new fiber discs in because I figured after 140k they were probably wore. But they actually had little wear at all. One was slightly wore where a rivet probably got hung up. But I'm sure they were good for another 200k or more.
Been a month since I've ridden. Felt good again  cooldude

Well done! Those little bits are so small, but can be such a pain.

Kudos to Matt for the assist.

I don't know Rob, three days ain't bad.  That's about what it took me, back around 15 years ago.

1 day break down, 1 day messing with the basket and 1 day reinstall.  Sounds about right.

Go for a ride for me. cooldude
