I thought the Saints would beat the Rams, they lost maybe partly due to a conversational pass interference call, but the Rams won none the less.  My team has not been in the Super Bowl for years, so Now I have to find out when it is and watch it Undecided

Partly?

Based on every post game report I've seen the Saints got robbed.
Doesn't matter to me but when the NFL apologizes and admits they messed up......  Well, whatever, no dog in that fight.

Robbed?  Well possibly I suppose, but he could have failed to catch it, and it they got the penalty they could have failed to convert.  Will never know.  Life isn't fair.  And life in the NFL can be even less fair

Dosn't matter to me, I won't watch.

Disregard the following statement, I bought in to a hoax that was on YouTube.

I saw a film clip last night of Tom Brady sitting on the bench while the national anthem was being played.
I think money and fame clouds or corrupts the players thinking

We need the armed forces, fireman and cops, but we do not NEED professional sports or hollywood.
I still won't watch due to the NFL not doing anything about it when it started.

Nfl penalties are all communicated thru hand signals, no conversations.  Smiley (It was a terrible noncall) But the Saints could have easily run the ball for the last 2 minutes and won the game.

I don't know where you saw that. I just watched the DVR of the game, and he was standing, tall and proud with his hand over his heart.

I heard that he sat through the anthem so I decided to do a search and find out if it was true.
Here is what I found that collaborates the statement.

There is always the possibility it was a hoax and done by someone who is not a fan of Brady or the Pats, if that is the case let me know and I will edit my original post to show that.

Was really hoping for a KC vs Saints Super bowl.  Unless you are a Pats fan it has gotten old to see them every year.  Would have loved seeing Reed get a ring.  Not a Saints fan but respect Brees.

Technically Andy Reid does have a Super Bowl ring as a quarterback coach of the GB Packers. (But I know what you meant)  cooldude

It's BS.  As Melissa Etheridge sang  "Through the perilous fight, or the ramparts we watched"  TB can be seen standing, waiting to get in the game like all the other members of both teams.  As the camera focuses on Gronk and Melissa sings "Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave" TB is seen in the background standing.  After the song is done, 4 seconds later, they show TB sitting and gathering his equipment.   Melissa stopped the timing of the last two words, because of the jet flyby drowning out everything else, so TB's timing was also off on sitting down.

I can't tell you why someone would put this kind of crap out there, but you were duped by it.

Why ? Because many have bought into the BS that all NFL players are unpatriotic, spoiled, privileged, over paid children. They have no problem with lying about them. When the truth is the overwhelming majority of them love their country, are kind and caring people who give their time and money to charities.

I can't speak about, or for, many.  I believe it is a very few that did what they did, to tarnish the game and flag.  But the ones that did, should be called out.

Making crap up is BS.

It's too bad that a single officiating call (or non-call) can decide the game, but I think that having a single possession (decided by a coin toss) decide a game in overtime is worse; there must be a better way.

Regardless, as a non-fanatical NFL football watcher, those were very entertaining games, with many displays of exceptional skill.  I'll be watching the Super Bowl.

As a rabid Cowboy fan I used to get all wound up about officiating. As I’ve grown older and hopefully wiser, I’ve come to see it all evens up in the end. After all it is just a game, even if it is an entertaining one at that. (I’ll be watching also)

On the overtime issue, I think the college rules are fairer.  Each side gets a shot until there's a winner, and if it goes to a 3d, they have to go for two points.

I think the NFL made a value judgment that the players (with big salaries, and mostly very limited duration of pro careers) are worth more than fairness, to shorten the (overtime) game.  With the great pro quarterbacks and receivers and kickers, starting at the 25 back and forth could mean 5 or more overtimes.  Then there's the expensive TV network time to deal with as games go on for another hour, maybe.  (Remember way back in 1968 when the network cut off an NFL long game to play the old Heidi Movie?  Man there was some serious pushback on that. Grin )

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heidi_Game

But remember, in the pros, the coin toss followed by a field goal, got a rule change to allow the other side another shot.

If there's enough pushback on the current rule, perhaps there will be another change.   But I think any change will still probably be governed by a desire to keep overtime short.

Overtime could be a Sumo wrestling match, with the two biggest strongest meanest guys on each team trying to throw the other guy out of a small circle, but while that would be short and entertaining, I don't think it would catch on  (Esp if they had to wear big diapers).  I mean really, who want's to see this?

I wouldn't think that seats on the '50 yd line' at a sumo match would be very appealing.....

People want to find any excuse they can to why the other side keeps beating their favorites.  They don't want to admit that it's better playing or coaching skills.  The NFL is entertainment.  They make more more when more people are interested and viewing/buying tickets.  The whole bogus story about Brady winning because he cheated on game ball inflation was a stunt.  It stirred more to watch and some to watch more.

A bit unrelated however in June of 1984 I watched the longest pro game ever played.  It was a playoff game in the LA Coliseum between the Michigan Panthers and Los Angeles Express in the old USFL.  93 minutes or in the 3rd overtime and LA won.  Brutal heat that day of 90 degrees or more I believe.  Notable players for the Panthers were Bobby Hebert as quarterback, later to have a successful career with the Saints and wide receiver Anthony Carter ( former wolverine great ) that also went on to success in the NFL.  For the express the quarterback was now hall of famer Steve Young.  I predicted greatness that day for him for his ability to scramble and make accurate throws on the run.   I think total attendance was less than 10k.

I think to decide who kicks off they should have both teams kickers line up and race to the end of the field. Would be entertaining and also would show the public that kickers can run.  coolsmiley

Very cool ! I got to see Steve Young in the 94 Championship Game. He was a GREAT quarterback. But, he got his butt kicked that day by a dominant Cowboy team.  Smiley (although their defense did knock Troy Aikman back into Henryetta OK.)

Be ause the league disrespects what you served for. I understand that they have the “right” and that too os a part of what you served for but it is not right in any level. Even if the players are now standing for the anthem. The NFL should have put a stop to it week #2. They as a multi billion company dont care all they care about is ratings. Somanyone who watches is supporting those A Holes.

Just read a ten question Q&A with Joe Namath as it is the 50th anniversary of the Jets beating the Colts in the super bowl.  The Jets were not favored as the defense for the Colts was the best in the league that year.  Namath "guaranteed" the victory after some guy hooted at a press conference that the Colts were gonna "kick their ass".  That guarantee was confidence and bragging all in one statement that came true in the final score: Jets 16, Colts 7.

Joe is easy going and must be so much fun to interview; he has come to a realization that he is a blessed man, gifted with a great life and family.  He's now 75 and still a hoot with his stories of glory, celebrity, and mischief.  He answers a question about his famous panty hose commercial with a laugh and explanation of the times.
And, oh yeah, he made probably the worst motorcycle movie ever...but had Ann-Margaret squeezing on the chopper. Evil  Not bad, Joe, not bad. Evil

However one I liked best was:

Question: "Some believe revised rules to limit excessive on-field violence are ruining the NFL. Agree?"

Joe: "Ruining the NFL? [Laughs] You aren't going to please everyone.  The game, and the rules, are better than ever.  The body is not meant for the game. It's a great sport for spectators and there always will be players willing to sacrifice to play the game."

To me, that is why those gladiators get the big paycheck.  They wind up broken, battered, and mentally damaged after 20 years of playing from childhood through adulthood for the cheers of the mob in the stands (and to satisfy their testosterone driven egos).  Joe's ego is intact, but he's finally gotten it under control after years of abuse in the bottle.  He's a national treasure now because he's survived after the booze, broads, and bennies!

Prediction: Pats by five in regulation and Tom Brady retires the week after. Lips Sealed

I read somewhere years ago that Samoans are the largest ethnic group per capita represented in college and pro football.  I am not sure when this started as they had the Jim Crow and such stigma to overcome the same as black athletes.    My sister, Carma, went to Michigan State from 64-68.  The coach Duffy Daugherty was ahead of the times in recruiting black athletes and anyone who could play the game well.  One was a Samoan fullback named Bob Apisa who became an All American in 65 and 66 when Michigan State won the national championship both years.  Last year my sister was at a Michigan State function in Los Angeles and Bob was there and they talked about the college years.  He was so excited as his grandson Jacob Isaia of Las Vegas Bishop Gorman had just signed to play football at MSU.

Lips Sealed

I have been a Namath fan since being a youngster.  It was just something about his swagger and style.  I remember that Superbowl and pulling for the Jets.  Heck I even remember going outdoors in the Michigan snow and building a snow fort at halftime.   He is right.  The human body is not made for football and the injury's suffered by most teams is immense.  Especially with the size, strength and speed of modern day players.   I think football needs to address their suits and come out with shock absorbing materials that could drastically lessen blows to the body.  Hey why not nerf?  I am glad Joe has gotten his drinking under control.  I remember an interview maybe 10 years ago or so during a football game, maybe halftime.  The interviewer was a female, forget who, and Joe was a bit tipsy and slurring speech and just came out and said I just want to kiss you.

No
Be ause the league disrespects what you served for. I understand that they have the “right” and that too os a part of what you served for but it is not right in any level. Even if the players are now standing for the anthem. The NFL should have put a stop to it week #2. They as a multi billion company dont care all they care about is ratings. Somanyone who watches is supporting those A Holes.
Very true, that's the reason I quit watching after the start of game 2 last season. It might have been about the 2 Packers who knelt during the anthem THAT day. I can completely see where young "instant millionaires" who suddenly have the wealth to do anything they want, and tens of thousands saying they are great might think the world is about them.
Why I never came back is because the Veteran QB Rogers, the Coach and the team president came out and said they supported the players. Fine, they can support them for me. The clowns were too afraid of the players to even be neutral, and so was the league. Impossible to cheer for something you can't respect. If I'm somewhere that has a game on, will I watch some of the time? Yes, it's always been a great basic game of skill and strategy, but it loses something in importance when you honestly could care less who wins.

Good interview, thanks. I lived in NY from around '59~'64, so there was perhaps more than a passing interest in the Jets, besides the fact that being born in WI and there being no cable, all other Sunday events to a back seat when the Packers played a NY team so the "Packer Game" was on TV!
Very good logic from Joe N and he should know. The game is tough on players, and the league itself has been run badly. There's nothing worse than losing key players to injury during a preseason game that means nothing. Could be flag football or similar. Then there's dirty players like Ndamukong  Suh, who should have been thrown out of the league back when he was still with the Lions.

I remember that interview very well (and I had watched that game).

You know, it's OK to drink alcohol, but I think it would be a good idea to refrain from giving TV interviews after a half gallon of whiskey sours.   I know I always did.   Grin

I read a SciFi story a long time ago that had replaced the players with robots, the story was about a scandal because a team won more than they should have. Unexpected plays, - like they had the "will to win" - which was implemented in a circuit board along with some other attributes. A programmer / maintenance guy had put it in his team.

Food for thought for the future maybe ?
