Truthfully there are very few pretty conservatives on this board.   ???

It’s interesting how some feel such a huge need to classify others into groups they presume to know. Devout Democrat ? Just goes to show your ignorance of me, even though I’ve posted 5 million posts of my political views. I guess some just believe what they desire to believe.

Let's keep it honest here.  You've only 20,650 posts.    Wink

To be clear, I personally don't think I am that liberal. But many here label me just right of Lenin. I just got tired of trying to explain where I stand and submit to members on the right here who view me as liberal. If one cares to know where I feel my views lie. Some things right of center and some things left of center. Over all maybe a little left of center, but nowhere near where most here judge me as. So, in short I wrote Bob and I (and a few others) as liberals for the sake of expediency in telling a story. A while back somebody posted some kind of quiz that judged your philosophy. I was very close to some here who consider themselves pretty conservative.

When you routinely come down against our President (often parroting MSMs most recent attack), you get thrown in the left wing (-nut) club (that hates on him all day every day).  No doubt there are some conservatives and centers who don't like him much either.  But you know politics (and war) often comes down to.... if you're not with us, you're against us.

Personality, ego, image, tweets, and wealthy-ness aside, most of us see him as nearly the only one left standing between us and full blown rampant socialism/communism/globalism/anti-Constitution (which we already have WAY too much of as it is).  He stands for our Country first on every issue, and so do we, and that is all that matters.

I was routinely against our former president and will be forever against Slick Willie's wife (and any one remotely like them), for obvious good reason.  I make no apology for that.  I'm proud of it.  And so was/is the solid majority of this forum.

And I'm pretty sure you know this.  If you want to consistently play the devil's advocate (and that is certainly your right and privilege), don't be surprised to be treated like the devil (from time to time).

Good debate should never be personal, but the front-line combat zone of today's politics makes that hard to avoid.  Especially when the opposition has made it a principle operational policy to call us, deplorables, racists, bigots, haters, misogynists, xenophobes, homophobes, liars, cheaters, and scum.  Eventually, people fight back (it's human nature).  Also, see the fighting words doctrine.

Just an observation:

Constitutionals generally align with the constitution on many issues.
Conservatives generally think they are at least somewhat conservative politically.
Independents generally think they are middle of the road politically between conservatives and liberals.
Liberals generally want others to think they are really middle of the road independents.
Progressive liberals generally appear to be socialist repressionist and not liberal or progressive at all.

Seems interesting to some that of the 5 types only the last 2 are trying to mislead others as to who they really are. Or perhaps they are being mislead and do not know what they are.

Just an observation, your observations may vary.

My comment was really meant towards f6john with his questioning why I called myself liberal in a previous post. It certainly wasn't meant to get approval here.

I've heard that too.  I was conservative before I was mugged (for a half hour) once.

But I think that just makes them law and order conservative.... they may still be overly green, fiscally generous for deadbeats, open borders, UN/big government happy, common sense gun laws and registration, etc.

The sad part about that is, apparently the Liberal had to be mugged to see the light.

Truth be told, many many people, in all professions, make more money in the last 5-7yrs of their working lives, than in the rest of their working lives combined.  I know I did (and saved almost all of it).

If I'd have stayed 4 more years, I could have nearly doubled my lifetime savings (and increased my pension 33%).

But I would have been locked up in the loony bin or the jail if I stayed any longer.

People who love their work are blessed indeed.

I hate it when people do something stupid to make a point, knowing it really has nothing to do with their beliefs. Instead, it insults those whom they infer are so dumb that they'll be impressed.
Posting the front page (edit: or every page) of a tax form has nothing to do with what the left is trying to do. Actually it's less than nothing because it's deceitful. That's a compliment by the way, because it means I know the person is smart enough to know it means nothing, not so dumb as to believe they did their part, now it's Trump's.
All they've done is show they have a return (or photoshop) filed their taxes (or didn't) etc. So what? To compare your simple taxes to Trumps, when TDS people are demanding Trumps and nobody cares squat about yours, is just silly.
Here's what I have ready to drop off at the accountant as soon as I get one more form mailed to me or made available online;

Doesn't mean squat, UNLESS a pack of rabid accountant dogs are planning on chasing me down the street until they catch me or I get hit by a car. Maybe they'll demand to know if the postage I listed is the only source of stamps (it isn't) or if perhaps I stole stamps from my own business to mail a non-business birthday card (I don't). But can I prove it? Depends on the burden of proof; I have US flag forever stamps in the office desk and various birds, cars, foods, etc. commemorative stamps in the kitchen drawer for private use. To the rabid left, that's not proof.
The President should do/provide only the bare minimum in this political climate. To do more would show he's not smart enough to do the job.
The way it used to work was when you found wrongdoing, you formed a committee to find out whodunit. Now the Congress, IRS, DOJ and AG pick a person, and form a committee to see if they can find any way to indict them ON ANYTHING. Is it any wonder they're terrified of the "little people" owning weapons?

Well said partner.

Only a fool or an idiot would offer one iota of help to those sworn and committed to bring you down.

Even if your army of well paid CPAs and tax lawyers tell you your returns are golden.

Why not bring extra ammunition to your execution, in case your firing squad are poor shots?

And traps are baited, aren't they?

It's called deflection.

Another corollary to this issue that's been bouncing around my noggin. I was raised that asking someone how much money that made was only slightly less offensive than to ask if you could take their spouse for an overnight test drive.

Is that just a southern thing, or a Texas thing and not universal? I always though that was pretty universal, but maybe I was wrong on that?

My family is from border state WVa.  My dad the mathematician extraordinaire told me at a young age to never ask what someone made (or was worth) (it was bad manners, and low class).  And with equal vigor told me to never tell what I made (which was hardly more than dirt).  He said there was business and there was friends and family, and I would do well to never mix the two.  Never sell your old car to a friend, if you want to keep that friend.

When we went to find my first car, he told me to keep my thoughts to myself, and never show excitement or desire to a salesman.  When we found the old VW I wanted badly, he made me shut up and walk away with a poker face, and drive off without it (much to my unhappiness), but when we went back two days later, the price had miraculously come down a whole $200.

He then told me to go to the bank and get a 90-day note, and not a loan, as the interest on the note was about $23.  That was my first ever loan (for $600 at 17).  They made my dad cosign (which my dad made clear meant the car was his until paid).  And I went in short of 90 days, and paid it off (out of my Mobil gas station $1.50 an hour job).

When I sold my first 650 BSA (to get a dirt bike), the buyer unhappily called three days later and said the clutch failed and needed replaced.  He wanted me to pay the $100 to fix it.  I told my dad I should not be on the hook for this, it was just bad luck (or his crappy riding).  My dad told me to pay half the cost of this repair, it was the right thing to do.  So I did, and the new owner was very happy with half, and I did not make an enemy (and I slept better).

Dad taught me about frugality and saving; growing up, we had the same furniture forever.  When it got old, mom made slipcovers on her sewing machine.  When we needed a new piece here or there, mom went to St Vincent Depaul or some other junk store, and bought old beat up stuff, then stripped it down and sanded it up, and fixed the drawers, then did all kinds of antique finishing, and this furniture looked better than brand new stuff, and was a point of pride in the family.

Dad was able to get his sons good paying industrial contractor construction jobs, based on his job.  This was nepotism plain and simple, but he required that we work just as hard and diligently as any of our co workers, and told our employers that hiring his sons would have no affect on them bidding contracts with his company, and that they should fire us if we we weren't good workers.  Both of us worked our asses off (and it was the hardest, filthiest most dangerous work I ever did in my life) and we made more than men working on the Detroit auto assembly lines (like half our friend's dads), and we were to never talk about how we got our jobs, or how much we made, to anyone.  And we didn't.

After I was working mowing laws (13-14), I was to put something in the church collection plate out of my own pocket.  It didn't have to be a lot, but it had to be something.

One of my dad's jokes ended with a punch line..... Hey mister, I don't mean to be personal or anything, but just how much money DO you make?    He thought this was hilarious.

Dad passed five years ago.  I miss him.  So does mom.  Richard Henry was the very best man I ever knew.  Smiley

Wow, like my dad & I to a t, way back when. My dad co-signed for a $200 loan on a 120cc Suzuki, even though I had the money in pocket. I couldn't really grasp why paying a few dollars interest would be valuable later. Then I bought a CB77 (305) and didn't need a cosigner, just 20% down. Then I bought my first new bike, a 450 DOHC twin. No co-signer, and 10%. Hey, this credit record thing is for real...
Very sorry your dad has passed on, at 88 years old, mine is still my hero.

Thanks for the words.   cooldude

If he was still alive, he'd be 89.

I am always drawn back to Mark Twain...  When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years

I butted heads with him at about 14-15 and he was very understanding with my ignorance.  He lead from the front, explained my shortcomings and asked me to try harder.  I didn't like it much, but of course he was right.

Years later as an attorney, I was able to do him a couple of very good deeds.  My dad's attitude about lawyers was pretty common.  He didn't like them, and was pretty proud that he never needed one.

One of my favorite Twain quotes also! Along with, "Man is the only animal that blushes, or has reason to." and, "Golf is a good walk, spoiled".

You know, instead of worrying about, or focusing on, the taxes of a billionaire who became a politician, I think we should be more focused on seeing the tax returns of politicians who became millionaires.
