using Champion power sport plugs #8812,  gapped at 0.32

after 24193 miles they have worn .002.

plugs were still indicating a rich idle, http://4secondsflat.com/Spark_plug_reading.html   see example
#2
so I now have the idle mixture screws open 1.5 turns with 38 pilots.

forgot to mention, that I have the Dial-A-Jet system installed since I first had my valkyrie.
It work well esp., in colder temps when the carbs will start going lean.

Dial-A-Jet system ... how does that system work over and above the way the carbs work?
Looks like you should be able to add fuel with the carb jet just as well?

it helps to fill in any lean spots esp during colder temps when the carbs go lean.
so I jet the carbs as normal for best running at 70-75F.  that jetting is good for +/- 25F.
I ride down to 30F sometimes colder if zero ice chance.

it actually will provide a finer gas/air mist than the carb can.
they tell u to run two main jet sizes smaller, I didn't like how it ran, to much delay sometimes and until the DJ kicked in. it actually is geared for higher rpm race conditions if u read all of their articles.
so every day riding I didn't like it.
I did a dyno run when I first installed it and it did provide a nice smooth power curve even the operator ask me what I did, sine he never saw that before.

the foam air filters have to be replaced every few yrs. $$$ so I make my own.

its not for everyone but it does work

so have still been dialing in the carbs with these high flow velocity heads.

Latest for idle mixture screw setting was at 2 turns open, I used the plug reading shown in example #2 in the link. The top of the threaded area of my plugs was always carbon up, even when I tried a hotter heat range plug during the summertime. didn't matter still carboned up. Put normal heat range Iridium plugs in and still carbon. so went back to the link which I've followed before timing indicators, and decided to close the idle mixture screws to 1.5 turns open from close.
Top of plug thread area is now not carboned up and only had a light carbon look to it while also seeing the metal itself.
With today's unleaded gas eth or not, the center insulator really can't be read like it was with leaded gas. Other parts of plug reading still work though.

Wow, engine runs so much better over wider ambient conditions, mpg is up, and tail pipes are getting lighter in color.

https://fboignition.com/articles/sparkplugreading

I recommend that for all to check that area of one's plugs and adjust the idle mixture screws so that they don't have a heavy carbon coating. closing the screws 1/4 turn at a time, ride a few 100miles and check plugs again until the heaving carbon is gone.
your mileage will vary.

Update 1/3/24
with my forward opening air box mods, I would have to block some air openings to restrict airflow when riding at 30F prior to the latest Idle Mixture screw setting.
Today rode 28F-30F and didn't need to block any air getting to the air box.
This is with the aforementioned idle mixture screw setting. Makes such a difference for overall temperature riding.
Also the screw setting I am using has greatly reduced any loud exhaust popping when getting off the throttle.  A rich setting can cause exhaust popping just like a lean setting can.
