So, I was out for a 500 day ride with my son  a couple months ago. Our day rides are typically 400-500 miles. due to his busy schedule neither of us got in much riding this spring. At the last gas stop I asked him how is butt was doing...

He started talking Smack... I'm  doing better than you ol' man... I could turn around & do it all again...  Grin

I was doing pretty good physically too & thought... the boy (40 years old) has never been on an iron butt ride with me. So I suggested we do an Iron Butt Ride (1000 miles with-in 24 hours) together in July while having dinner that night. He  smiled & said hell yes.

Now I've done 4 of these rides before, 3 of them with my wife Dragon Lady on back.. 2001,2003,2004 & 2005, so it's not new to me but it has been a while & I am considerably older & like most feeling my age & aches, pains of the older man I've become.

Then 1st two rides I did were sponsored by a local Gold Wing Club & sanctioned by the Iron Butt Ass. where they tally your mileage at the start & end of the ride at a check point they set up.
At the end of the ride you got your certificate & premium quality solid brass belt buckle. The gold wingers stopped doing this in 2003 are no longer sponsoring this ride.

Our Ride date is next Sunday, The anticipation & excitement is killing me.

Our ride plan is leave 3am, travel the interstate for a couple hours while still dark. at daybreak we will be in eastern Washington & cruising on some low use 2 lane roads I found many years ago (which became favorite rides by my local valk club 'The Vermin'). By late morning we will be on Lolo Pass. 150 miles of twisty road .. nothing but, pull out of one turn going into another. ending up in Missoula MT.
back home old hwy 2.

My son doesn't know it yet.. at the end of our ride I'm going to give him one of my coveted belt buckles.

Sounds like a blast! I'm waiting for the elder spawn to get a little more experience under her belt before taking her on one, although being a 16 year old Iron Butt rider does have a certain cachet to it as well... Hmmm...

Being a proud Native Texan, I made sure my official Iron Butt ride was all in Texas. A corner of it. Because Texas... Wink

Ha... nothing like that big bike buzz you get from that much time in the saddle.
It typically stays with me for 3 days.
2 of my rides were with  a couple Vermin buddies. Did the same route touring thru Washington & cetal Oregon all 2 lane roads except for the last 150 miles while dark.

Great stuff

Amazing as it sounds we clocked in at 18 hours 13 minutes both times.

Most folks plan that early morning departure.  I advise sleeping late and departing afternoon.  That leaves the end stretch of the ride in the light.  It's likely not so important for the 1,000 mile ride but for the 1,500 it does make a difference.

Not as dinky as many believe due to the size distortion of traditional maps at higher latitudes...

Yep. If you’re in Texarkana, TX you’re closer to Chicago than El Paso.

I heard where an Eskimo woman was on a bus listening to two guys from Texas bragging about how big Texas was when she piped up with, "We're thinking of dividing our state in half, then Texas will be third..."

My first trip through TX I left New Orleans early am thinking I would get to central TX in the afternoon, hang a right and head out towards the panhandle.  It didn't work as planned and ended up in Texas for 3 days before reaching NM. That was the trip I learned to carry extra gas in the western states. I was riding a Honda CL450 with a duffle bag strapped on the back. I was heading to  San Diego to meet a bud getting shore leave after he had spent a year in the North China  Sea. It had only taken one (long) day to get from Boca Raton, Fl to New Orleans.

Well, the main issue I had on previous rides was..
Fighting off the sleepiness.
The Gold Wing sponsored rides... their starting  check point didn’t start until 6am.
The demons were getting to me pretty bad late night.

This time..  a super early start I’m hoping to avoid that scenario.

Its all good!

Back in the day .. my wife & I rode all over hell & back on a Suzuki 450.
Of course I was 60lbs or so lighter back then.

When my son was 3, maybe 4 i would take my him for rides. I would put him in front of me & he would hold onto the handle bars... smiling & singing As we rode around the neighborhood & stop at the candy store every day after work.

Awesome,
the last time I did Lolo, it was late summer & there was forest fires in the area.
It was still fun but, at times the smoke got overwhelming.

I've never done an Iron Butt.  Never even considered it.

To me, it's time in the saddle that's important (and interesting), not distance traveled.

I do freeways when I need to be A to B in one day.  But I really don't enjoy freeways, especially after about 5-6 hours.   I start out all patient and mostly law abiding, but by the end of the day, I'm putting the hammer down, and damn the torpedoes (I just want it to be over).

I do appreciate the challenge, and discipline.

But I'd rather wander through the mountains and back roads all day, though you don't make all that many miles that way.  It sure is a better day though.

You nailed it right there.
The so called iron butt ride is just an excuse to do a great long in the saddle ride with the people you care about the most, the shared experience, and of course that adrenaline rush that stays for a few days.

My 1st two rides was about getting the belt buckles + the great roads.

The other 2 rides were for the great roads & experience with good friends.
We didn’t even submit the trip documents the iron butt ass.

Typically the only interstate travel I do is... in the darkness.
Maybe its just me but, I feel A little safer on the slab when you can’t see the critters on the sides of a 2 lane road.

My son & I were successful in our endurance ride last Sunday.

We logged in at 1054 miles in 20 hours 14 minutes.
Our ride was pretty low key, compared from my older days of hard ass riding & to sacrifice my pegs as an offering to the chrome gods.
I was digging the views up on Lolo Pass. As a matter of fact I believe it was the 1st time I ever saw it... HA.

My plan of leaving at 3am worked well. Pulled in home at 11:14.
Never got sleepy and the demons left me alone late at night on this trip.
After the ride both my son & I were still very energized from the adrenaline rush.

Im glad I had the opportunity to have this experience with my boy.

Yes, I did give him one of my belt buckles.
 He was stoked.

I'll offer my own reason, have at least three or four Iron Butt Rides, probably more, never counted them cause it didn't and doesn't matter to me.   My reason was, I had a long way to go and a short time to get there.   During those trips, I'll take whatever asphalt gets me where I want to go the fastest or shortest (most efficient) way.

My longest and hardest ride was traveling 412 miles without stopping on my old Valkyrie.   My feet never touched the ground and I didn't stop till I was on fumes.   My bladder was about to burst but, I wanted to know just how far she could go on one fuel stop.   Won't do that again....   uglystupid2
