Usually going around looking at Christmas lights isn't my thing, but the spousal unit made me an offer I couldn't refuse..... For my birthday/Christmas, she got us seats on a WWII era C-47 to do low flights around downtown Ft. Worth and the fancy Christmas light displays in the area..... LOVED IT!!! The pics of the lights don't come CLOSE to doing them justice, but since when has that ever stopped me? Smiley

The plane was built in 1942... So was my dad..... We offered to take him, but he declined, said he'd spent enough time in those cursed noisy contraptions flying 'em commercially back in the day, but for this kid who grew up in the jet age it was truly special to spend some time in the arms of that old war bird...

WOW that is really cool cooldude what a gift and what a way to see the area.

Were you able to walk side to side or did you need to remain seated? Either way still really a great experience.

Trans Texas Airways.

Heh yup! That's the very airline my dad frequented back in the day...

Were you able to walk side to side or did you need to remain seated? Either way still really a great experience.

It was setup with two columns of seats on the left side, and open area on the right. You needed to be seated/buckled for takeoff and landing, but once at "cruising" altitude you could get up, walk around, or, as I did, plop down by a window and gaze out the entire flight. They banked hard to the right over the sites to see so the best view was had by getting up and sitting by a window...

Did she bring her chute?
Night jumps are kind of cool, scary but cool.

You mentioned it, but I bet it was noisy as hell.

Closest ride for me was the C130..... WHAT?

Amazing to consider that was the large transport for all of WWII.

Very cool.  Great old airplane.  They fly great in ground effect too - I had to do a quick climb once to avoid a shrimp boat.

Heh, we went with her competitive skydiving team, the plane was full of skydivers and their, er.... cheerleaders... No parachutes were allowed on board, but they're working on getting the plane over to the DZ for a boogie sometime for jumps from it...

All of us, in the team jersey's (The team is the Flying Unicorn Circus... In Training..... Pay no heed to the initials... Wink )

And just the team members:

(Side brag - never thought I'd be married to an extreme athlete with a corporate sponsor! Their team got their first official sponsor today... Wooo!)

You mentioned it, but I bet it was noisy as hell.

It actually wasn't as loud as I was expecting. We were able to have basic conversations, with a little yelling and a lot of "Huh?"'s.... They did hand out hearing protection before the flight, but almost no one took advantage of it...

Very cool.  Great old airplane.  They fly great in ground effect too - I had to do a quick climb once to avoid a shrimp boat.

So Serk, when will you be taking your first jump?

I've got 5 static line civilian and 93 freefall jumps along with the five military bail outs.
I said previously that night jumps were scary.   I know this because most of my jumps were in the dark.  Not because the sun had set but because my eyes were closed tight as I exited the aircraft.  Shocked
Have always been afraid of heights.   It is, what it is.   2funny

You're not going to get me to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. We did all kinds of chute related training while I was at Pensacola (especially "over water related"), and I felt like I would know what to do and survive if it came down to it, but I really did not ever want to put that training to actual use ( especially the helo dunker).

So why does the person that will hit the ground first not have a helmet on?

So why does the person that will hit the ground first not have a helmet on?

The helmet is mostly to make sure the skydiver remains conscious on exit and deployment of the canopy (Or if there's any mid air collisions, keep in mind there's a 3rd skydiver with us taking the pics and video).  Don't want the person that knows what they're doing getting knocked out cold, the tandem student is basically just ballast.

And we really kinda hit the ground at the same time. Poor guy; the bigger the tandem student (Me) the smaller the tandem instructor has to be. So I was wearing this tiny little dude like a backpack, and when we landed, I basically landed on him...

(And yes, being a native Texan, I skydived in cowboy boots... Smiley )
