So, I saw this on Newsmax.  So, I looked it up to verify and it is truth.

So, the link below is to the news site with the best video.  And as I stated, it is real.

That bison was pissed!  :tickedoff:
Grandpa didn't stand a chance, not sure he could have done anything different  :coolsmiley:
He really took quite a flight
Suffered a few broken bones, not too serious.

Bison looked young and playful.  I think he was dancing around wanting to play.  If he was mad once he got the guy on the ground I think he would have gored or stomped the guy.  I think he was wanting to play.

...and this wasn't the usual case of some idiot trying to pet the fluffy cow.... This guy was doing all the right things, keeping his distance but the wild animal just decided.... Nope, not THAT one!

BTW, what did the buffalo tell his male child when he headed out to college?

...bison.

I saw that video yesterday and it reminded me of trying to outrun my older brother after getting him mad. We had tall arborvitaes lining the side of our house and I'd scamper in between and around them yet he'd always catch me.

Now this guy did nothing wrong from I saw, he was just walking and far enough away to seemingly not be a threat to the bison.

On the other hand there idiots like this out in the world, intentionally sticking hand and arm in the river and petting wild alligators after that girl in Florida was attacked.

Seemed to me the bison's first target was the white pickup that stopped between it and the two walkers.  When the bison started charging, the pickup truck driver skedaddled, leaving the gentleman and his grandson as targets. I don't think bison have great vision, by very good motion detection. Once the truck was gone he went after the next moving object.

I've only seen bison on a ranch in a field, I believe on a ride headed by Mark(3fan4life) during a InZane ride.  Memory states they were cows and calfs, but regardless, if you see a bull, during rutt season, making dust clouds, you best bet is to slowly walk AWAY, asap.  But maybe just standing still from a distance may also be a good plan.  IDK, and don't really want to find out.

Interesting thought experiment - if you'd been carrying and been the flying man, would you, and if so at what point would you have availed yourself of your noise maker?

(Let's face it almost any carry caliber wouldn't stop him, but the noise and annoyance MIGHT? But, you'd have a lot of questions to answer for if you used it.)

I don't know the answer, just a thought experiment, and hopefully something that only ever IS a thought experiment for any of us.

I did see a report that the bison will not suffer any consequences from the park service for being a bull in heat.

Excellent.

Out side of the Judge, can't see where any hand gun will even get a bulls attention, but maybe the noise would?

I wonder if bear spray would work?

Maybe not. I don't know if it is a published precaution, but one in the presence of dangerous animals should have close and quick access to a vehicle or some other form of protective separation.

I do applaud the action of the old man in distracting the bull away from his grandchild.

Buffalo are A$$holes!

This one charged at us in Yellowstone in 2019:

A large herd was crossing the road.

We had backed all the way up against the front of a motorhome, trying to blend in.

This one was crossing the road and then turned towards us.

At first he was walking and then he started trotting towards us.

I waited until he was as close as my nerve would take and I revved the the engine on the bike.

The exhaust proved to be loud enough to make him sidestep.

When he did I dumped the clutch and took off, yelling at my buddy to come on.

I don't know the answer either.

My question and suggestion. How accurate and steady is your aim under pressure? My suggestion would be to aim for an eye, mouth or maybe the nostril. Maybe the bullet could pierce the soft tissue and then tumble and roll around inside the skull while destroying his brain.

Or not.

We had a brangus bull break a front leg fighting another. Hired man tried a 22 and it did nothing used a 308 rifle. Lot of hamburger for the bunk house hands. Buffalo like to target motorcycles always gave them lots of space when we road in Yellowstone. In the animal kingdom males do not go into heat. Females go into heat.

"Buffalo like to target motorcycles"...
One tried to mount me on my Victory CCT
In Cooke City Montana.
Later, we were in Custer State Park, ended in the middle of large herd crossing the road. They were TOO Close, Had to stop. Dismounted and stood beside the bike.
Ranger came and started yelling "Get back in your car!!!"    :tickedoff:

You are correct, I should have said during the rutt(sp?)

They say it takes 7 cents to make a nickel these days. Loose money to make money sounds like the government. I have been bit, kicked, romped on, butted too many times in my life by cattle and horses, this is a, not, so feel good position.

Moonshot_1

This is just a guess but it occurred to me as soon as I saw the video. The bull bison has a beard. I do believe that their beards are significant during the rutting season as I would bet a larger beard equals an appearance of greater dominance. It was clear to me that this particular bull bison was surveying his domain at the time. I don't think the truck triggered anything, but soon as the truck left there was a guy with a HUGE BEARD who stopped, put the phone to his eye and looked directly at the bull bison. The phone kind of looked like a giant eye. This is what the bison saw and triggered it. So it went to run him off. Once the guy got tossed, the bison's job was done and he was dominant once more.
