Any of you folks out there have any information about Valkyries being outfitted with a sidecar, i.e., make of sidecar that would be suitable, handling characteristics, etc? Thanks.

My son and I installed a Motorvation sidecar on my Valk three years ago. I had a 4.5 degree triple tree installed to make the steering easier but changing the trail like that will make it not as safe if the car is taken off and the Valk ridden as two wheels. Removing the sidecar is easy, reinstalling it is harder. My sidecar was a little light for the Valk, rule of thumb is the car should weigh 1/3rd the weight of the motorcycle. I ended up with about 100#s of permanent ballast. The Valk will easily haul a 'car but the mileage will drop some. I averaged 27mpg but i had a auxilliary gas tank in the car which was a good idea. There are lots of sidecars out there. Probably the cheapest one is a Russian Ural. The earlier ones needed a heavier axle to handle the Valks weight. There are three adjustments on sidecars which directly affect the handling: trail, toein, and leanin. I only touched the surface here. I have since sold the sidecar and Valkyrie. Velorex makes a sidecar for just about any occasion. That is what Dad is running on his Honda Shadow 1100 and he seems pleased. He's rigged up the brakes on the sidecar which seems like a no-brainer but I have seen a lot of rigs relying only on the bikes brakes.
For a cheap introduction into the world of sidecars a used Ural is the way to go. Just for the record they don't ride anything like a motorcycle. Some people get off of Dad's saying they'll buy one, while others get on saying they will and get off saying they won't. I recommend giving the world of side cars a try before you start installing.
Around the country are several shops that are good at side car installation/sales. Most of them will take the time to talk to you.

Mine is a Champion Escort sidecar. I've been quite happy with it, the dogs like it -- which is a good thing, since I bought it for them!
Wizard enjoys the ride as well -- I get to play chauffeur sometimes.

I'm a big fan of EZS sidecars, don't think they are available in the US but they are in Canada. A Dutch company. My GL1500 Wing has a full EZS conversion. That is wheels, forks on the bike changed also, it is an absolute dream to ride. http://www.ezs-sidecar.com/en/sidecars |

I have a Champion Escort on my Valkyrie and love it. The tuning is just right and the electric trim adjustments makes highway travel a dream. I wasn't looking for a sidecar although I ahd thought idly taht it would be neat. I had found a valk in Chattanooga for $6,500 but then found one locally with the sidecar for $6,000....and like the Russian guy on the DirectTV commercial, "I jumps on it". I do home healthcare for a living while I'm in nursing shool and the young lady that I take care of absolutely loves it. We're taking her to her parent's home in Miami for Christmas and trailering the Valk so her sister (also with CP) can ride it. |

I am now the proud owner of Solo1's sidecar. I bought the rig from Wayne about 3 years ago. IT IS AWESOME! I have it mounted on a 99 I/S that i bought wrecked and repaired. as to the question of having reverse on the bike, you really don't need it as the bike is very easy to push back from the forks if you have to. I have pushed the bike many times with the hack fully loaded with no problem at all.
I fabricated a fuel tank for the sidecar plumbed into the bikes tank and the total capacity is about 14 gallons. A fuel pump sends the fuel right into the stock bikes tank. I will ride this bike to Prudhoe Bay Alaska this winter.

If there is any slope INTO where I am parking, I will do 180 deg., and let it roll backwards into the spot. It sloping AWAY, I will just drive in, and let it roll out when I want to leave. It really is no big deal. I drive into my garage, and I just push it backwards to get it out. Reverse is really not needed. Just need to think ahead a little. After a couple million miles on a long nose Peterbilt, with a 53' Reefer behind, you learn to think ahead about where you are driving into: ie; how am I going to get out! LOL MP |
