Check the clamps on the intake tubes from the airbox to the carbs.... they can be loose and you can get a whiff from them...... check all 12...

by "still" I assume you smelled gas fumes before starting all that.......probably was the gas cap all along.  One thing I found useful.........sometimes if you park the bike in the garage, family room....and you smell some gas.  try opening the key door thing on the gas cap and see if there is a couple drops of gas under there..........dap with a cleenex and throw away outside....this helped me but now for some reason I dont smell it EVER, maybe just used to it be now.....lol

The gasket around the gas tank filler neck is a likely culprit as well.

I did check the clamps...I also make it a point to check them after I have had the tank off...usually a week or so later.

Is the gas cap gasket a PITA to replace?

You'll need to make your own.  Honda doesn't sell it separately.

what has worked for me in the past if the gasket is not crapped out is to clean the gasket off with some alcohol and then just take a little vasoline and rub on the gasket. it seems to kind of renew it up.  well it works for me.

Tighten the bolts on the intake runners; chromey tubes going from the carbs to the top of the heads. Several threads noted that this ended their gas fume issues.

I did what Fred just said, It did the trick on mine, It ran well, I just would catch a whiff gas once and a while so this spring before riding I tighten them up ( had to remove one pod to hit that clamp), but all is well no gas smell yet.

Good Luck!
