New to the Valkyrie

About a month ago I bought my first motorcycle, a 99' Valkyrie Interstate. Saturday, the 15th I went on my first group ride. It has been an awesome month.

Boy, I agree. You are a "brave soul" to grab the Fat Lady as a starter bike. I hope you had ridden some kind of a bike before, I`m sure you have.

There is a significant problem with a Valk as a first bike: Upgrading at a later date is very difficult.

I do not believe there is an upgrade from a Valk. I have owned , raced and rode many bikes in the last 50 (did I say That !) years. This is the last bike I willl own, unless I buy a second VALK.
Welcome to the family. All questions will be answered by someone and no one will ever laugh at you for any reason (?) This is the best source of info for the bike.

Some here have commended you for your courage at choosing the Valkyrie as a first motorcycle. I, for one, hope there's some misunderstanding like maybe the Interstate is a tricycle or you really do have a lot more riding experience than "first motorcycle" seems to imply.

A heavy, powerful bike can kill you in a heartbeat. If this really is your first then please be constantly aware of the care you need to take while accummulating experience and get all the help, such as riding classes and material for learning effective riding techniques, that you can get.

How's this for a thread resurrection Y'all. Has it really been 3 years...? Anyway for those who stumble across this relic from threads gone by, Hello Again. To belatedly answer the question posed in a few of these posts, yes it really is my first bike. I have owned a few project bikes that I never got licensed and only road around at low speed, or in the dirt, on the farm, but this is my first registered, and road worthy bike, and yes it was scary as hell. The day I bought her I drove around in an empty parking lot next to the dealership for about an hour, and realized I had no business taking it on the road, and asked them to deliver it to my house for me.
Well what a difference time makes. The Lady and I just rode The Tail of the Dragon, HWY 129 last Monday Aug 18th in the rain, without incident, or drama. I Love My Valkyrie.

Hello, I don't remember seeing this before so, I'll welcome you now.

I'm a firm believer that anything that is powered and can get out into traffic can get you killed but, the words of caution in reference to a powerful motorcycle were well intended and true. The fat lady can and will test the amount of self control you have and if not careful, will get you into some serious trouble. But, you've gotten past that for the most part. I say that because, I'm not sure any one ever gets past the desire to roll on that throttle even when we should exercise better judgment.

I do know there are a couple of rides coming up this fall that you might want to join in on. The Mason-Dixon is coming up and then there is Crazyhorse's Veteran's Day ride. I don't have the dates in front of me but, both would be good to attend and you'll meet some great folks if you go.

I had a leap like that when I went from a mini bike, to a 1974 Z1 900

that was the beginning of my Motorcycle Addiction. It took many bikes and many miles before stumbling onto the Fat Lady.

Once I rode her for the first time, I knew I had finally found what I've been looking for.

Well, maybe 2+ hours...

At the Asheville Inzane this summer the Joe Boyd Memorial Ride group stopped at Lake Lure awaiting our law enforcement escort. THAT was an interesting event...but it was all good.

We're a nice ride down I-40 from Asheville - Winston-Salem is the major city closest by.

Am happy I didn't pay much attention to the recommendations either. Mine after a 45+ year hiatus was an 800# Vulcan 1600. That was a top heavy beast compared to the Valk.

My 98 standard 'fast black'

is my first bike... I think of it as a mental state. Certainly nothing wrong with the bike we choose to ride. Any 'first bike' is a problem if the rider is not educated or respectful of the responsibility to be skilled and aware.

I don't have any good photos of my Lady Valk., but here is a link to one of us doing the dragon's tail on the 18th of Aug. All of my shots are on a PC that is getting rebuilt due to some ransom-ware I got off of Addicting Games one night. I have them backed up on a 1 TB external HD, but still need my PC to access them.
