Although both the Powerstroke and Duramax have made improvements, they still don't have the long term reliability of a Cummins.

We got this for Carolyn to haul her horses with two years ago, it had 250K on it... it has
been trouble free...



I don't know much about trucks, I heard this was the last year of a particularly good

Guy I work with has an early 90's S10 (the old square body) 2WD with a 4BT Cummins and a 700R4 trans built to keep up with it. Dyno'd at about 450hp and 600lb/ft with 28mpg if he behaves.

Used to be a Chevy man, now I drive a Dodge with a Cummins in it.  I love that Cummins engine.  Maintenance costs have been minimal, I can tow with anyone and gets great fuel mileage.   A diesel isn't for everyone but for me, it fits like a glove.

Edited: Oh yeah, I get between 23 and 25 mpg empty and the worst I've ever gotten with a load is 14.2 mph and that was with a very bad aerodyamic load from KS to KY pushing the speed limit by at least 10 mph.  Yep, I love that Cummins.

As far as GM goes, I'll consider another GM when they pay back every red cent.  

Yeah a buddy of mine has a 95 dodge dually with a cummings and he says he gets 18 mpg whether he's pulling his 35' travel trailer or not! Only if I wanted a diesel would I trade for a dodge with a cummings!

More powerful, I fully agree, now let's talk about engine failures and maintenance costs.  Cummins wins hands down.   Both Duramax and Powerstroke have made improvements, they had to.   
Although I drive a Dodge, it really doesn't matter, put a Cummins in it and I'll drive just about anything.

Maintenance will be done by me so that will save me alot of $$$ As for engine failure on all make of trucks 2007 and above yeah damn EPA, The most common problem and cause by the EGR cooler the coolant leaking inside the EGR cooler and run into the engine. I plan to change Bullet proof EGR when warranty run out in two years. Cummins is good but Dodge body is craps never any better than Ford or Chevy. Dodge have been knows for years and why can't Dodge do better on body? oh well!

About Ford, 7.3L is the best engine ever, the last engine 7.3L make in middle of 2003 due to EPA change to 6.0L was the worst engine. 6.4 improved but still failure and I believe it was not well maintenance. 6.7 have same problem with 6.4 too. So far almost a year my tryuck is good, Last time in end of June 2011 I had radaitor replace cause by thermostat failure and had new version on thermostat with warranty. I'm knocking on wood!

My Red 2001 Ford F150 supercrew 4.6L is still running strong now about 176K miles. Same engine, same radatior. well maintenance, I replaced new A/C system in 2008 I also replace few of coil packs. That's why I did not want to sell this red truck...

Body style is a matter of opinion.  Some folks like the Dodge, some don't.  Some like the Chevy/GMC, some don't.  And, there are some that even like the Ford, some don't.  As far as the EPA goes, all manufacturers have the same rules to live  and produce by.  I have a good friend who owns his own repair shop, he told me, "I love the Powerstroke Diesel, it keeps me in business."    I agree on that EGR, Ford didn't have a better idea on that one. 

Regardless of who does the maintenance, maintenance is still maintenance and both Ford and GM diesel motors require significantly more maintenance than the Cummins.  These are well documented facts.

I know of quite a few Cummins motors still pulling loads with well over 400,000 miles.  I know of one with almost 600,000 miles where the motor has never been touched.   The Cummins in-line 6 is a better design by far, more reliable and less costly to maintain.   But I'm glad you're happy with your Ford and I'm not knocking it.  I just can't afford to drive, maintaine and feed a Powerstroke.

Now this is what I've been talking about....and she ain't even a diesel! As I said earlier I had 303k on my 94 Z-71 with a 350 gas engine.

no experience or opinions on diesel engines since never owned one and couldn't recommend one of the big 3 since all are made to tow basically being 3/4 to 1 ton suspension which I don't need.  Just wish Toyota would get in that game but I really do not need any diesel engine since anything under 8,000 lbs. will easily tow with my 5.7L tundra engine no problems.  I use to own a 3/4 ton GMC crew cab 6.0L gas engine and that thing sucked the gas getting only 13 mpg vs. my tundra with more pulling power and much quicker off the line averaging 17 mpg.  Plus, 3/4 ton suspension unless pulling something 2,000 lbs. or more ride terribly firm for my tastes.

fueleconomy.gov has it listed @ 13 mpg city, 17 hwy. What does the tundra get on the hwy? Umm, of the line? Check the NHRA and see!
