I know the Florida driver's handbook used to say that the right lane is for driving.....and the left lane is passing and making left turns ONLY.  

I'd bet that most, if not all states driver's handbooks have similar verbage.

There you have it.  Now move the heck over.....and STAY there unless your passing or making a left hand turn.

Why do they sit in the passing lane?   For the same reason that time and time again, as I cruised backroads this weekend, I came upon people who I was sitting behind at 55, and trying not to tailgate them, but when I get a chance to pass, they tailgate me while I'm doing 80.

Don't park in the fast lane in Colorado.  Colorado's "Left Lane Law" states:

   A person shall not drive a motor vehicle in the passing lane of a highway if the speed-limit is sixty-five miles per hour or more unless such person is passing other motor-vehicles that are in a non-passing lane.

I generally don't refer to it as the "fast lane" or the "passing lane" anymore.

It's the "phone lane".  They use it so they aren't bothered by merging traffic while texting and yakking.

I travel in the left lane most of the time due to the fact that the right lane is so beat up from trucks,big pot holes and broken pavement.I also usually run at about 70-90 mph but will always move over for someone who wants to go faster.I'm on a motorcycle and cannot compete with a 4000lb car.On a motorcycle I try to be considerate of other drivers even if I don't like what they are doing.If I do have trouble with a cage driver I either use the superior speed of the valk or get off the freeway and cool down.Any confrontation with a road rage cage driver is only be bad  for the biker.

Here in Florida, mostly snow birds. Retired, bought a big suv, and towing a travel trailer, cannot hardly see over the hood and cruising in the passing lane at 50 mph. Still say, if it is tourist season, why can't we just shoot them.

Not to change the issue. I don't hang in the fast lane and move when some one wants to run faster than me.  I do the speed limit + what ever they let me get away with. Normally the only people passing me are the lane weavers and crotch rocket boys and the cops. They are moving so much faster than anyone else, you don't see or hear them coming. When ever I see any of them I don't move. Let them figure how to get by me. I'm not moving in frount of them as they go by me at twice my speed.

I commute to work in the HOV lane. (Legal on a MC). I feel 72 in a 65 zone is a good speed. I can't tell you how often a sole driver is tailgating me to move over. He's not legal to be there and I also feel no obligation to move over. AZ is a bad place to place someone's life at risk. Most bikers carry.

Just remember that those who hog the passing lane just might have pushed a Q-Tip a little bit too far into their ear.  I gently pass them on the right when I can and stay the hell out of their way!

Doesn't matter if I'm running the speed limit or 35 over it. If someone wants to pass me I get out their way. If I'm on a two lane with no passing areas I'll pull over at the first safe place and wave them by.

I noticed when ridin' in the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina a few years ago. If you got behind a local they would always find a way to let you around and wave as you passed. If you got behind a cage which didn't, they always turned out to be tourists.

Indiana cage drivers are some of the worst about it. Just as we seem to have some of the worst when it comes to littering. Some of em seem to keep a constant stream of cigarette butts and other trash flowing out their windows.

That is something I loved about most of the back roads in Texas I have rode, several times came up on a semi, ( note most have paved shoulders) and the truck would move over onto the shoulder to let you pass. Makes it nice on 2 lane roads.

but the CITY texans.....well that's a different story.

It's not technically a law, but probably has more force than most laws.  It's plastered all over the place, especially at border crossings:  "Drive Friendly".

Been to CA several times on business, noticed 2-lane mountain roads have frequent turnouts.  When you get in behind someone going slower, frequently they will pull over & let you by.  I heard (or saw a sign) that such behavior is mandated by law.  Hmm good idea. ( Didn't look it up, so if someone has more info feel free to inject here. ) Now if the motor homes with TX plates impeding a mile of traffic on CO mountain roads would do the same... Folks stuck behind them may get impatient then do a bad pass. In MY rule book, double yellow means "motorcycle passing only" (of course with due diligence). IMHO, powerful cars with skilled drivers can also pass after clearing the lane.  No passing zones are designated for the least capable vehicles with an incompetent driver - pass anyway and a ticket is a sure thing if you're caught.

Texas roads are great. Most are wider than other states main roads. They build thier interstate shoulder wide enough to pull over and still be on pavement. The reason we pull over and wave you by is cause we ain't in a hurry anyways. Might as well pull over and let you pass.  And don't forget to wave.  Every rural driver (OK not Everyone) will give you a polite wave, you know, just cause!
Kinda like a "Howdy, neighbor!" Spent 4 years driving back roads, paved, unpaved, jeep trails in the panhandle for work.  Of course if anyone ever waves you down, you stop no matter what. Not law, just rules to live by.  Dang, now you got me missing home!

Speaking about not moving over, I had a funny one a couple months ago.  I am about 15 miles from Tampa on I-4, and here is a city cop, outside his jurisdiction , and he in bullying drivers, run up on the car in the left lane, and start flashing headlights and tail gating until the car would move over. Well to make a long story short, he got on a Mercury marauders rear end and started the same thing, the Merc moved over, and soon as the city cop passed pulled in behind and lit him up, totally unmarked Highway patrol car. I was laughing so hard, almost had to pull over. Hope the clown got what he deserved.
