Sorry for your son's situation Jeff, but the union fools will reap what they sow! Too bad union greed will destroy this company. They should recognize damn near every local super market has a bakery and their products are not going to be missed. Whatever "niche" they thought they had will be filled in essentially overnight.

I will say that it is just as much the companies fault as the union, after all they agreed to the silly contracts. 

Yes and no.  The company agreed to the contracts when they were doing well and able to pay.  But, when business is bad, they have to stick to the deal.  The Union wants to be a partner in their gains, but not in their loses.

Deadline was 5:00 last night and the union didn't budge.  18,000 people out of work.  American icon Wonder Bread and Twinkies are no more.  Sad.

126 Westchester County employees will be let go as the unions refused a deal where they would have to start contributing to their benefits.  I understand that 126 people out of work is not big deal for the union, but I thought the union was for all of their members and not in the business of sacrificing the few for the many.

I don't think anyone that basically strikes or quits their job should be entitled or eligible for government-provided unemployment benefits......     For those that crossed the line and went to work, yea... but for those that failed to clock in the last week.... Now, my son, who loved his new job, is back looking for a job.

They think that "liquidate" means someone will come in and buy them and treat them better than Hostess did. Liquidate means hard assets to cash, people are not hard assets.

Funny how the union tough guys are all still shouting their "STAND STRONG" "IT'S A BLUFF" "LETS TAKE THESE CORPORATE BASTARDS DOWN!"

Use the back hoe to dig the new pool around 3am when you cant sleep. Then around 5am decide thats not where you wanted it anyway and fill it back in so you can drive your new car to work and leave it somewhere. The wife will be glad to pick you up from work.

 While it is convienient to blame the bakers (and they do deserve some blame) Hostess has been spiraling the drain for several years.   Selling off assets, giving raises to management, while getting  concessions from employees combined with the changing tastes/wants of the consumers all have contributed to Hostess's decline.

What better time to close up shop and sell off the remaining assets when you can scapegoat (and the bakers may deserve some of the scapegoating) a subgroup.  The media focus has been on the bakers union and not on the broader failures of the Hostess company over the past decade.

As an actual member of IBC management I can attest to the fact that none of us got raises. The new people they brought in were getting big bucks, but the management that was initially there didn't see any increases for all of the years I was there during the first bankruptcy. The Judge wouldn't allow it. It's part of the reason I quit, I was hiring new department heads at a rate of pay higher than I was making as Plant Manager. We did get retention bonuses, but never got increases, and that isn't coming from some pro union blog, that is personal experience, in that company.

That said, I had no doubt that they would not keep the company running. That is why I left. But the problem was none of the Prospective buyers wanted the whole company, and none of them wanted the union baggage. Again, I was there.

Supply and demand..... now that there is no supply, the demand will be (or seem) greater.
