NRA announces new school security program

Top dogs at the NRA announced new program to provide armed security at schools, funded by the NRA.  They were interrupted twice by banner-waving anti-gunners.  Expect the interruptions to be the focus of the lamestream media. LaPierre introduced a respected, I think he was, an ex-congressman to head up the program. They made sense, and good rational arguments for the program. However I predict Obummer will ignore the offer.  After all, that would be joining the devil when their agenda is grab the guns.  You can find more from the horse's mouth at NRA.org.  I expect it will be reported by some accurately - like Fox - and distorted by the rest all day long.

Here's the transcript of LaPierre's speech: http://home.nra.org/pdf/Transcript_PDF.pdf

Support the NRA and join them. They are the main bulwark against the loss of our rights.

Gov. not real big on protecting places that our kids go to school, and other places like the Libyan embassy. No votes in it for them. School shootings keeps the base fired up. This could have been done long ago.

Where do I sign up, no pay needed, will take what ever training needed and pass any background check needed, no criminal history,  and I am sure there is enough grandparents and parents that will do the same to protect our future, (children) if this option was given there would be more than enough of qualified people on the list, at no cost to, the federal gov, states, school boards or anyone else.
Years ago it was Fast Women, Bikes & Old Cars. Now it is Fast Bikes & Cars & Old Women! My My My how things change.

The libs are so dogmatically fired up against guns and the NRA, they would rather have more school shootings than ever adopt or use any NRA program, no matter how common sense or effective.  Agreeing with any NRA sponsored program is anathema to the cool aid drinking fools and idiots.

Do a little research on the fine Eddie Eagle gun safety program for kids........ the libs refused them in their controlled schools, despite the clear goodwill no-cost program.

I like this idea of trained guards in the schools.

A school district north of Pittsburgh voted to arm officers in their Sr and Jr High Schools, prior to the shooting.  Shortly after the Connecticut School Shooting, they extended that to include the Elementary Schools.   http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2012/12/11/butler-area-school-officers-to-carry-guns/

Wayne (NRA) recommended that years ago.... but it wasn't widely adopted (of course).  The only deterrent to an armed criminal is an equally armed adult in the immediate area providing appropriate resistance when required.

I am a teacher and heard a lit about this today. It seemed most everybody agreed armed guards would be a great solution, but how do we pay for that? Any ideas there?

I was reading about the district in TX that allows teachers to carry on the job (after evaluations, training, etc), and I think that has potential to be the greatest deterrent of all ideas I've heard.

Yeah it's a great idea.  But won't happen.  Teachers are ingrained with acadamea.  Who are the most dyed-in-the-wool libs of all?  acadamea.  You'll never get them as a group to arm, even to protect themselves and their charges they profess to love.  They are the idiots that voted Comrade Obama in, both times.

When they put cameras in school buses not all of them were real. But not knowing whether you were on camera or not stopped a lot of the trouble.
Even if teachers as a whole don't want to carry, the thought of the possibility of one or two on the premises could stop a potential trouble maker.

Mark, as a general rule I agree with you.  Institutionally, teachers and teaches union will be against this idea down ideological lines.......... but there are certain to be many solid exceptions.  You must not throw out the baby with the bathwater.......... as the left would do to us NRA neanderthals.

We have to be better than them, whenever we can.

While rank and file urban teachers may be unwilling and unable, the vast (and often remote) middle of this country probably has many teachers/adminstrators who are ready and willing and competent.... much like the pilots.  But unlike pilots who had to pay for everything themselves, teachers and administrators who are willing and able can be trained at taxpayer/public/NRA expense.  This will have to be a school-by-school, county-by county project, and whatever works should be done.  I am thinking arrangements could be made to let volunteers/teachers monitor and participate in a limited fashion in police academy training, which exists everywhere.

People that truly care about children can reach no other conclusion.  IMHO

I will be more than willing to perform this service, if they are interested in having me.  Veteran, qualified with short and long guns, already security checked for CCW, actually trained as a weapons mechanic, even look like a donut-eating cop.  I assume they would provide the weapon(s), I'm not interested in letting them know what I have, or jeopardizing them particularly when the gun grab starts.

This is the most insightful post in this thread.  Well said!

The NRA says armed guards in every school is the solution.
That's 130,000 " trained " personel for schools alone.
What about other places where a similar situation could occur.
I even heard one report that they are making bullet proof back packs for children.
It has been suggested that teachers be armed.
If your daughter studied hard to be a teacher of young children, how do you think she would feel when told she is responsible for protecting the children & shooting someone.
The NRA needs to look at Countries that dont have mass killings & spot the difference.
US has a different attitude to guns than most of the world.
It is certainly a different culture to what I live with.

That's probably the only statement you've made that I agree with....kinda. More guns
in the right hands are a definite step in the right direction. Making it more difficult and/or
expensive for good people to own a gun for self protection is NOT a step in the right
direction. That's why we yell so loud when the looney left starts hollering 'gun control, more laws, turn in your guns' etc. Once they get the laws passed it'll be more difficult to regain
our freedom and our right.

Maybe you should have read the whole statement. Every one of those I've read
said "teachers that are WILLING to be armed". Doesn't mean anyone HAS to. Also
say that training will be provided.

An old and tired attempt at logic.

We are trying to protect children at their most vulnerable location.   It has happened plenty of times, and is CERTAIN to happen again.

It has not been happening at pools, libraries or on busses.

Just admit you don't like guns or armed security and be done with it.  I am glad you have no vote or voice in protecting our children in our schools.

EDIT:  On reflection, aside from the lefty view of (evil) guns in schools generally (as an inroad on their personally owned and operated cradle-to-adult socialist training facilities), it seems apparent to me that lefties feel if we arm schools, they will somehow lose their best/most recent impetus to pass some sort of assault weapons/semiauto/magazine ban/prohibition/confiscation.  Unfortunately, this is not true at all.  Armed security of some type must quickly be implemented in schools..... and the lefties can still take their best shot at our firearms.

That's a lot of what ifs.  That sounds like someone who is afraid to go outside.
WHAT IF tens of thousands of people are killed by drunk drivers every year. Are their lives less important than school children?
WHAT IF those people who are killed by drunk drivers are the parents of school children?
WHAT IF a drunk driver hits a school bus and kills all of the kids?
The result is the same. Dead is dead.  The weapon is different.  An ounce of lead vs 2000 lbs of metal.
If you take the guns away you have to take the cars away.
Since our government has not stopped the drunk drivers, then by going after guns and not cars, it's pretty obvious that there is a hidden agenda.

Don't try to stick everybody in a category. Too many do this simply because it's convenient. Most of my co-workers hunt, carry concealed(off school grounds), shoot recreationally, etc. A couple are Gulf War veterans. Some are very conservative. We run the political gamut just as many other professions.

I SAID "as a group".  That is definitely a valid statement.  Of course there are exceptions.  I would be surprised if you could muster 25% to this solution.

Here's what gets me.  All this is supposedly in response to the tragedy in Connecticut.  Nobody even has all the facts yet they've come to the conclusion that the solution is gun control.  What a bunch of BS.  Why don't they just admit they are taking advantage of  this tragedy to further an agenda.  Its pretty apparent to most of us.

I believe the nra was offering the training and a plan for each school that wanted it for free. I as a parent and I am sure plenty of others would offer to take this task on so that no money from the fed, state or local schools would be needed.

It's called "deterrence"..... like the government uses when they establish laws and consequences or repercussions when you violate em, or like why our government sends military forces (Ships and troops) to encourage deterrence through peaceful presence, or maybe like the Nuclear weapon deterrence theory.   And if you don't believe in that theory of "deterrence".....   get yourself and 4 of your buddies with big bats to charge and attack an armed guy.... and I will get one guy with a semi auto pistol (limited to 10 rounds to make it fair for ya).  Let me know if knowing that guy has a gun might deter you or your four buddies.

If we all carried guns, or didn't know who carried guns (without having "gun free" zones), it wouldn't  be a easier for those wishing to go to gun free zones to do their deed.   Don't see many instances of mass shootings/break-ins, robberies etc...   in a bar that caters to Police do ya?

The intention of the 2nd Ammendment was NOT for some politician to regulate your deer rifle. It was put their so the citizens would be able to protect themselves from all enemies, foreign and domestic. The founders feared an over reaching all too powerful government more than anything else. They wanted the citizenry to be able to repel an intrusive (US) government.

Gun free zones = high casualty zones. It's all so simple. The criminals go where they have the least chance of encountering an armed citizen. Any citizen mandated to be un-armed is really a subject. They are no longer a free citizen.

Exactly.  You might have heard this, or not.  The theater that Holmes picked was the ONLY one in the area designated as a "Gun Free Zone".  There are other theaters.  Yeah, I lived there, less than a mile from the theater.  That's why he picked it.  I was amazed no one in the theater, of a couple hundred patrons, pulled a concealed weapon in defense.  Possibly explained by the sign.  But it would not have changed my attendance had I planned to go to that theater, and yes I would have been carrying.  I'm pretty sure there would have been a different outcome.

I noticed one glaring difference in the two links provided in this thread. The author of the article decrying gun ownership as being a health hazard spouted a lot of statistics.

While on the other hand, Wayne LaPierre quoted no such drivel in his speech. Truth needs no statistics.
