Well, since all the racists are here in one place, did anyone happen to catch the PBS show last night, 180 Days - A year in an American School?  I didn't see it all, but I recorded it to watch later.  It is about high school kids @ DC Metropolitan Highschool.  All I can say is we are in DEEP trouble folks if this is what we get for the trillions we spend on education.  It is obvious to me that throwing money at education will not make our children learn.  Parents need to get across to their kids how limited your opertunities in life will be without an education.  I'm not saying everyone HAS to go to college or get a PhD, but you at least need to be able to read above a 3rd grade level.

I definitely agree. But, the schools are to blame for this too. When my 8 year old grandson came home and told me that his mom and dad couldn't yell at him or spank him or they would go to jail, they have crossed the line. He also said he would call the law if they did. When I asked him who told him this he said: "my teacher". WTF, and this isn't the first I've heard of this. Its taught all through our school system.
Kids allowed to text and talk on the phone while in class, tell the teachers to "FO" and nothing is done. Who's to blame here?
As for education, I told my kids and grand kids that they needed a high school education and college. An associates degree today doesn't get you too far either, not like it did years ago. I also told them they needed to "specialize" in something. One is going to school to be a vetrinarian and one a nurse. Thats the girls. My grandsons (x3) one is headed for the service cause he said he wants to help. I don't care so much for that idea right now but its up to him. One is enrolled as an engineer student and the other says he is going to Juliard (sp) to learn more about music and his guitar.
Not Holier than now but at least they won't be setting on their butts on the couch playing video games with no money or direction.
For the kid with only the high school education its gonna be a tough row to hoe. OUR kids need education and the teacher need to keep to teaching and leave family to family.  There!

I agree with you, I left the schools out as well as the NEA and a few others, I guess MY point was that the parents can and should have the most influence on a child, not the alphabet soup of government agencies that are ruining this country with their intrusion into our lives.

While the criticism of schools and the NEA is warranted. There are tons and tons of parents out there that have abdicated their responsibilities to their offspring.

Case in point: When my baby girl was in the 1st grade I took her to school one morning. Noticing her teacher outside, I parked and started talking to her; just wondering how Lizzie was fairing in her first year of school. She mentioned that she was so tired. Question asked "why?". She told me that she had been at the school since 6 a.m. (it was now around 8:30 a.m.) and that the teachers had to rotate each week. Some of them were required to be there that early every morning because there were parents dropping their kids off at that hour. In other words, not only were they being required to teach our kids, but they were also being asked to provide day care for those kids that arrived 2 1/2 hours early for school each morning. Sorry, but that's just wrong. Too many parents have taken the position that schools are not only learning institutions, but day care providers and disciplinarians. And IMO it's all because those parents are chasing the almighty dollar and ignoring the most important assets they own....their kids. IMO...horse whipping them is too lenient.

My town spends $36,000 (from Westchester Magazine 3/13) per student.  $6,000 more than the next highest cost per child in any of the other towns in the county.  The average SAT score is in the mid 1300's compared to the neighboring towns where the average SAT score is 1600 or better.  Several of the villages within the town have average SAt scores in the 1900's.  So, for an additional $6,000 per student, we get less performance.

I dropped them off at 2.22 pm

However I would calculate that at least 25 to 30% stayed on at school until parents picked them up.

It was called "Extended learning" and was provided for non English speaking children or those from single parent families.

Some bus drivers would also do an extra run after middles schoolers were taken home dropping off any kids left at the school.

Extra costs in keeping the schools open, having teachers and other staff on duty, paying bus drivers and wear and tear on the buses.

I have been teaching in a top ten business school for many years and I can tell you that not all kids should go to college.  There are better alternatives for many.  One of my brightest former students now owns his own landscape and lawn service and is one of the happiest people that I know.  The corporate life was not for him, he didn't suffer fools easily to say the least.  Unfortunately, government and business alike are full of fools these days.  The only way to survive today without an education, is with a gun or on the tit of the government.  WHEN the government well runs dry, survival is going to be hell for those who cannot do for themselves.  There are a batch of highly educated dumbasses out there who don't have a clue.  We can still fix this mess that we have allowed to be perpetrated on us, but IMHO, time is getting short.

BTW, how did we go from being racist to ragging on the education system?

I believe when I inquired about the PBS show in DC.  While not meant to be a racist post, if you watch the program (which I haven't in it's entirety yet) it pretty much deals with only one race.  If this show is accurate, and I have no reason to think it isn't, we are dooming these kids to relying on the government for a meager survival, or worse.

Did not see the program, but living in NOVA and working in DC for 20yrs, it is amazing that the DC schools system is the absolute worst in the nation, for many years and no end in sight.  Huge DC taxes and bureaucracy, perpetual DC employee theft, fraud, embezzlement, mayors that snort coke and do hookers on video, etc.  It is the shining example of how not to run a city.  Detroit and Chicago are no prizes either.

When my son Andy was in grade school he came home and asked me why our family hunts an endangered species? I said we don't, what made you think we do? His teacher had told the class that whitetail deer were an endangered species. I called the school the next day and talked to the principle and the teacher about it. The teacher said that in some places whitetail deer are probably endangered.

Well said. Be a engaged parent and drive a old car if that's what it takes. Kids just want their Mom and Dads time and attention not a big house and fancy car. Not saying that's why all parents are working O/T but it happens a lot.

My Dad raised 7 kids, worked 3 jobs, rarely saw him during the week before 9:00pm except at dinner.  Sunday's were everybody up at 7:00am for church, and then he'd spend the day with us.  My Mom didn't work until the youngest was in middle school and the 3 oldest (me included) were out of the house.  We regularly got our asses kicked if we needed it and poor grades were not tolerated.  Pap never drove a new car until 1970, and all were worked on by Him and I.  Those of us (5) that went to college, paid for it our selves.  Not quite what I saw in those kids in DC. 

And yes Detroit is no better, 40 years of Democratic control and corruption have taken it's toll.  Quame, the only one to be convicted, is going back to the big house (and I don't mean U of M stadium).

While not stated in the most eloquent terms, I believe Whipitnow was merely providing some statistics, I can't say if they are accurate or not, but I don't consider statistics to be racist.  His elaboration on those statistics might inflame those sensitive to any derogatory comments about certain minorities, but he does maintain that several races have bad actors in them, not just one.

In other words, not only were they being required to teach our kids, but they were also being asked to provide day care for those kids that arrived 2 1/2 hours early for school each morning. Sorry, but that's just wrong. Too many parents have taken the position that schools are not only learning institutions, but day care providers and disciplinarians. And IMO it's all because those parents are chasing the almighty dollar and ignoring the most important assets they own....their kids. IMO...horse whipping them is too lenient.

Well said. Be a engaged parent and drive a old car if that's what it takes. Kids just want their Mom and Dads time and attention not a big house and fancy car. Not saying that's why all parents are working O/T but it happens a lot.

The wife and I worked 6 and 7 days a week, minimum 8.5 hours a day and frequent mandatory 12 hours days for years. The company had the right to stop you as you clocked out and force another 4 hours OT. We had two choices, work or quit. There was no quarter given, no one gave a damn if you had kids, sick parents, a dying spouse or whatever. Work, quit or be fired, those were the choices.

One of the women there who was a friend of ours had a husband who was dying of cancer. She had to take him for treatments every couple of weeks. She started with perfect attendance and was one or two more missed hours from being fired when her job was saved by her husbands death. If she had been fired he would have lost his insurance, healthcare and treatments.

My best friend works in a job that sometimes requires him to work from 1AM till 5PM, I know, I work at the same plant. That's 16 hours with no extra pay because he's salary. His wife has cancer, her life depends on his job. And, even though he has retained his job through all of this, the cancer has financially destroyed them. They are raising two teenage girls too. Even though his job pays well, he would take a 2'nd job if he could to help pay their medical bills.

When you have kids, if you love them, you provide a roof over their heads, food in the fridge, band uniforms, money for field trips, whatever it takes. Even if it means you stay at work when you want to be home and you know your kids are growing up behind you back. Sometimes there is no choice.

I respect parents who sacrifice their lives for their kids and spouses far more than I respect those who sit on their ass talking on their Obama phone while other people work even longer hours to take up the slack.

You never know what kind of cross the other guy or gal is carrying, nor what their choices really are.

Sorry, I work strange hours and have only been able to check in on my phone which won't let me post.  Here's the post that I consider racism.  There are several more like it on that thread.  This is from the "There is Evil" thread.  The poster was Whipitnow.  Since I'm such an idiot, please explain how there's no racism here.

Honestly, Alien, I read that post and personally felt that, not so much the content but the delivery, it danced way too close to the racially unacceptable line.

Because in the past I've been more free to remove posts than my colleagues would prefer I have tried to wait for a supporting opinion in the form of someone reporting a post before I exercise that option.
