Reverse racism does not exist. It's just racism regardless of who it happens to.

I can't believe I actually agree with Anvil on something!
take personal responsibility and keep your word

I dis-agree. One has to start before the other. It was discrimination, shouldn't have happened but it did. So, just stop it. But as in most things, folks over-react. Reverse discrimination was stupid, but we're human, thats what we do at times, stupid things. I was a product of it, but, in the end, I'm glad I was. I think things turned out for the better.

LOL!  Patrick, you certainly do have the right to dis-agree (SP?).

I'd call that reverse intellectualizing.   :)

I didn't get a job once, because, " we are waiting to see if there is a qualified minority available, before we hire you'.  I told the employer that I met EEOC minority  status, being a Veitnam war era vet.  Then I was told that, that wasn't enough,  if I was a female, AND a person of color, AND a vet, there would be no problem getting the job. So to answer the question...  yes
You were a victim of affirmitive action.

Isn't affirmative action, G sponsored racism?

Perhaps from a benevolent intent, but racism nonetheless.

No. People are confusing racism with discrimination. You can be prejudiced and/or discriminatory without necessarily being a racist. Affirmative action does not force opportunity for minorities because it is backed by the belief that minorities are better than the majority. In fact, it was enacted to COMBAT that type of thinking.

An interesting perspective, but racism does not necessarily restrict itself to one race being better than others, but simply different and preferred.  Affirmative action (didn't it become interesting when someone decided words didn't have to mean what they've meant) past or present based upon race is indeed an application of racism.  From there we can have long discussions on the length and breadth of the benefit and damage done by that application.

:)

If you are discarded or treated with inequality because of your perceived race you are in fact a victim of racism.

I don't think I could call affirmative action racism. To me its just discrimination and should have never been instituted. Discrimination should have just been stopped, plain and simple. Well, it wouldn't have been simple because we're human, but, should have been stopped never the less. But, as said, we're human and we over-react. As said, I was a product of 'reverse' discrimination. At least that particular state agency saw the error of its ways and put a stop to it.
I think these 2 terms are often used interchangeably, many times things 'over-lap'.

Im pleased to see this topic has been much more civilised in discussion without the use of slurs ! And we all seem to learn a little about each other here . I know Im not always agreeable to people and have a sharp tongue at times . I just dont see ghis going away though , some people cant let it go . I really think I could fully ,under the right circumstances .

Jess from VA

So Jim Crow was racism, but affirmative action is not racism?

Of course, this comes down to definitional semantics.  Good intent vs bad intent?

Objectively, both are based exclusively on race (gender, etc).

I am betting many years ago, some favored Jim Crow laws as a way to keep the peace, and not exclusively from bigotry.  Regardless, Jim Crow was unconstitutional, as affirmative action should have been.

Serk

If something is based on race, no matter it's intentions, it is racist.

"Affirmative Action" is, by it's very definition, racist.

I still disagree. AA is not so much a race-based issue but a quota based on demographic. Race just happens to be the column that's under the microscope. In fact, AA isn't strictly race-based. It's also gender-based.

So then your position is that if we add something to our racism it nullifies the racism?  So then if I own a restaurant and refuse to serve both people of Asian origin and any children under the age of eighteen, and of course that is all done with logically reasoned good intent, I'm not racist?

;D

I would suggest that you are just an all-around grumpy guy. Those things seem to be pretty random.  ;)

AA's purpose was to open opportunities to people who would not otherwise get them. The point was not to exclude anyone, that is an unfortunate side-effect. White people can and still do get work where AA quotas need to be filled but AA doesn't specifically "exclude" anyone by manner of race. You can argue that it's time has passed (ad I would) but it's still not racism. Race is incidental.

Would child labor laws that forced companies to hire adults instead be considered a form of Affirmative Action? Is it ageist?

Apparently life experience has been different where you grew up.

That is, incidentally, the exact same logic some white people used during my youth to not hire people of other races so the jobs would be available for white people.

Intent for me just doesn't enter into whether or not behavior is racist.  If specification of perceived race is included in preference then the behavior is racist whatever the intent.  I'll leave it to someone else to determine whether the racist behavior was evil or good, but it was racist.

We agree that the time for affirmative action has passed.  We might disagree on exactly when it passed.  ;)

The whole point behind AA was to exclude someone. Years were spent excluding qualified people in favor of under qualified people.

I've been refusing/trying not to read you. But that is just plain ........ I'm not going to even say what that statement is. Of course its a flawed policy, its a liberal policy. But, that certainly was the point of that policy.

Oh no, please do say it.

Read my posts or don't read them. I don't care because you seem unable to grasp the basics anyway.
