I gave my kids advice on how to be independent and not rely on hand outs.  I told them to live within their means so they don't find themselves wondering how they're going to make ends meet.  I gave them some advise on not being a dead beat and to stay in school so they get a good job.  I gave them advice to make decisions that won't haunt them in the future.

that's what I gave for giving Tuesday.  as for giving to the poor?  I'd give 'em the same advice.

I have a crippled cuz that likes to take things apart and save the copper, metal and then sell it when he gets enough stuff. A buddie of mine called me and said he had an old dish washer that needed gone asap. I picked it up and took it to my cuz, He loves to have something to do and make a little extra cash. :)
I just wanna Ride............:)  And hang out with all the cool Kids riding Motorcycles.

I gave the trash men the trash, the Verizon Folks a hard time, my GF a kiss as she left for work, my #1 daughter sound advise on relationships, and gave a prayer for my #2 daughter to help her get thru her issues.  But other than that.... I didn't give a crap today.   Oh and I gave a few buddy's a call...

Alph, I try not to allow one day to disturb the tone of my life.  That and I don't like the media and culture to dictate to me how to behave.  I didn't compete on black Friday either.

I do try to be giving when I can and I don't offer much advice at all these days.  My children have all left home and I have no knowledge of why each poor person is experiencing poverty.

For better or worse, my day and view was very different than yours.   ;)

A wise uncle of mine once told me everyone should experience being poor once in their early life. I experienced it, and it's taught me a valuable lesson. I'm a college student, I don't have much, but I am fortunate for what I do have. Anytime I meet a homeless person on the streets. I will ask them if they really need cash to buy food or booze. If they are honest about food, I'll got to Mcdonalds and buy them a few burgers. If they are honest and tell me booze, I'll got to the liquor and buy them a 6 pack. I feel everyone should experience a strangers random act of kindness just one time.

good advice Alph,  sure hope your kids listen more so than mine.

They think they have it handed to them on a silver platter and trust me, it isn't me, it is the wife a ton more so than me, but I never win an argument.

I tell them to do something for a change and it is like, what is that 4 letter word called WORK???

Really caring about others is a full time thing, but this sounds like a planed event. I dont do planed events like this and give on command.

I wasn't going to say anything. But, on tuesday this group of useless teens comes into the diner and sits at a table near us. A number of us old farts drink coffee every morning and solve the worlds problems. These idiots started talking about us thinking they weren't being heard so we entered their conversation. They were all bitching about not getting what they deserved from the system. They all dressed like bums and as it turned out not one had a high school education or a GED. The GED was too much of a PITA and waste of time. Not one had full time employment and made barely more than minimum wage. There welfare and food stamps and wages just weren't enough for them to lead the lifestyle they expected.
We asked if any of them thought about trying again ,or at all, for a GED or getting a second job. Not one wanted to work even 40 hours a week. It was useless conversation.
Just before leaving, the appliance store owner across the street from the diner was helping a costumer that had just purchased a used washing machine load this washer onto the roof of the guys car. It was a riot to watch. So I approached the fella and tried to help him. I wanted to put it in my truck and take it to his house. This fella couldn't speak a word of English so I had a heck of a time communicating with him. But, anyway, we got him to stick it in the truck and a friend and I followed him to his apartment. We then had to take the old one out of the basement and slide the 'newer' in its place. I hooked it up for the fella and he was thankful. He was just trying to get by anyway he could.

That right there is a great argument for bringing back the draft......... cumpulsory 2-yr service would even be better.  However, in today's PC climate, I would not want to be their basic training DI. (But I would really enjoy watching) ;D

Drop and give me 50 you big whiner.

I guess I was bad.

I gave my next door neighbor hell for planting his flowers on my hillside by the driveway.

Asked him what the hell he was doing, he said I now own that ground.

Told him BS, in a basket you own that.

I said if you would like to see the lot line I can show you real quick.   Let me get my big tape.    Told him to have them out of there in 5 hours or they would be in my mower bag.    He said I'll get em moved.

We went to see my niece who has cancer, at a Hospice.   We got back 7 hours later and they were still there.

Went out to the back garage, fired up Johnny Pop and mowed the down.  Dumped the bag in his garbage can and parked the tractor.

An hour later the Sheriff showed up on my doorstep.   Answered it, and asked him how I could help him.

He said the gentleman over there filed a charge against you and I have an arrest warrant.    I said let's talk about this before we go to the station.   I said if you feel safer with the cuffs on, be my guest.   He declined that.    Told him the situation, and how his father-in-law mowed the bank for me due to my age and equilibrium.      Told him he said he now owned that part of my yard.

As he was walking away, he was shaking his head, and headed down the neighbors driveway.     He laid into the neighbor like a momma bear would someone for touching or petting her cub.

I hollered over to let up on him, he knows he wrong and afraid to admit it.  His mother-in-law whose actually owns the house, told the Sheriff, I'll take care of this and for him to get his f'in ass in the house.

Haven't talked to him since and when he is outside and I come out, he very quickly runs in the house.

Trouble started because the lady across the street, divorcee, no kids, told him if someone took care of a piece of property for 7 years they owned it.   Well, he wanted to push the story.

There is more to Adverse Possession than taking care of it RJ.  It does vary by State law.

Adverse use must be NONPERMISSIVE.... everyone knew the property was yours, and they were just doing you a favor.  This is not adverse possession.

there's a section of land in our back yard that is not ours, but I mow it, and have been mowing it for the last ten years, just because it "looks" prettier, makes my back yard a little bigger.  I asked my neighbor if he's alright with letting me mow it and using it for an occasional "badminton court", or when my girls were in softball it was the outfield.  I'd never think of taking ownership of it, mainly 'cause that would mean more property tax!!

We had a similar incident at the airport. A neighbor was using our property [ we owned the airport] as a driveway as his was small and narrow. I suggested many times to send him a letter allowing him to use the property as he was but it was to be shut down one day each year. [ One of our state laws]. This was rejected. Being human and not satisfied, he continued to push his luck and kept expanding what he was using. When we said something to him, he had a lawyer send us a letter stating the property was now his. He was using it, not maintaining or improving it. So, that was the end of us trying to be a good neighbor. We sent him a letter telling him is no longer allowed on the property and we installed a fence.  He got mad at us, gee wiz. I'm pretty anal about maintaining runway center line after departure, but, we seemed to start drifting for quite awhile. Especially just after sun up on sunday mornings while heading out for our weekly dose of burnt eggs and pancakes.

Well didn't know it was giving Tuesday, but a fellow in our church with wife and 3 kids lost his job, they were getting by, just.  Looked grim for the kiddies this Christmas, so kicked in a few bucks to see them over the hump.  Good guy and nice family and knew it wouldn't go for smokes, booze, or drugs, so gave myself a little feel good moment.

speaking of a-hole neighbor, mines a HD fanatic as well.  He put up a string about 4 years back to mark the lot line and accused us of snipping it all the while we were gone that full week on vacation.  He made a smart comment on our answering machine telling us to leave HIS stuff alone and not cutting the string otherwise he'd call the cops.  We have proof we were not home.   lucky for him I had to go to work and my wife was furious for once and marched on over to them both telling them how could we cut his string when NOT home and quit making harrassing comments on our answering machine and left before they said a word.  I was so proud of her I would've handled the incident a lot worse off.

Later that year, he was being a smart ass and told him if he doesn't like it, to build a 10 foot fence on the lot line so I didn't have to see his sorry ass ever again and walked away.  Haven't talked to him since - nice neighbor aye??

I have zero tolerance for a-holes and if anyone pissed me off, I hold a grudge for life and never forgive.

I have this thing for little kids that have been dealt a bad hand, the St Jude hospital gets any extra I might be able to spare. Actually never heard of a giving Tuesday but by coincidence I did cut a few bucks to St Jude on that day, but for me a was a Christmas gift and nothing to do with giving Tuesday.
