Do they make a car seat certified for a motorcycle? I can't find one.

I did do this with a four wheeler but we only went real slow around the yard but  this was pulled off a video of bikes on the Dragon.

If your feet are not touching the pegs, it is illegal. Here anyway. Child is too small.
Now this is getting interesting........

I am sure they don't but there is probably no law requiring a child seat for a M/C either.

Don't know the rating on her straps or how she has it rigged. The childs feet would be flailing about in an accident as would the childs hands. Yes-child has a helmet-but is the helmet PROPERLY FITTED? Too many questions not enough answers-so I M H O-NOT safe. RIDE SAFE.

Legal or not, it is not the LEO's job to find the law.

That is for the County Attorney's office to find out.

So, I'd say she would probaly walk.

I'm not saying it is safe or legal.

No law, it is legal.

I use to work for an airbag and seatbelt company in the test lab., I use to work close with out legal dept.  I found that many people like that are generally the first to try and  sue the child seat manufacture for their own stupidity. Another thing is we tested belt pull of 6k before breaking, also seat belts are designed to stretch and have give in them. In my opinion, people like that, think it is so cute until the child gets hurt or even killed. I feel that is child endangerment.

Each State has it's own rules, they haven't got around to an unconstitutional National Motorcycle Code, yet.

Even without a minimum age, minimum height, feet to pegs, type rule, reckless endangerment could always be charged and taken to a judge/jury, if the county prosecutor was interested.

At least mom has made an effort at safety.  Gloves or some kind of hand protection is lacking.  Ditch the stupid shades and put the visor down.

There was a case in Denver a couple years (or so) ago, on this issue.  Cop wrote a ticket based on "child abuse" since there was no specific law.  IIRC the parent fought it in court and won since there was no specific law and the abuse application was a stretch.  However note it cost him money in attorney's fees.  At least up front.  I'm guessing he countersued for legal fees as well.  I didn't google it to verify any of  this - just going by memory.  If anyone remembers better or finds the case online - feel free to correct this.

Can't say legal or not, that would depend on state laws but, I will say you can't fix stupid.
Hopefully the child will not be hurt in the accident that will eventually come.
Stupid people don't deserve children.

You can not legislate common sense, that picture is proof of that.

I don't go for this crap about constitutionally right.  People use our Constitution against us to make their screw ups and wrong doing, to be a right.   What Crap!!!!  Parents and care givers have an obligation to protect children no matter what.  Every little issue and glitch can't be covered by Constitution and laws, but must be covered by common sense. Hypothetical situation:  You see your neighbors little one go in the garage and start up a chainsaw and started playing with it, you feel he is too young to be messing with, but it is his Constitutional right.  What do you do, No laws against it, parents don't seem to care, why should you care no laws are broken.  Seems stupid right!!   Well, when so called rational adult dose things like put children on quads, trikes, motorcycles or anything that can harm them, then they should be prosecuted.  Children have natural rights!!  The right to life, the right to not be a vegetable, the right not to be disabled and the right to just be normal healthy kid.

Jess from VA

My reference to the Constitution was only that the Fed has no right, under separation of powers, to impose a national motorcycle code on all 50 States.  It is up to each State to make it's own rules, as most things are supposed to be.  Like health insurance.

I am not saying your wrong, I am just over thinking it like may be the way they would. Like  " You can't tell me how to raise my child, I know what is good for them".

Sure, it takes a village don't ya know.  Right or wrong, parenting is the responsibility of the parent, even though some think big government and the nanny state know best.

Mom's wearing a peanut shell. Like she gives a damn about safety anyway.

WamegoRob

Arms and legs flailing in an accident.. how does that differ from a child not in a car seat?
The possibility that the helmet may not be properly fitted.. do you wonder that about every helmet you see?

Seems to me that the kid would be better protected strapped to half a plastic shell than none at all.

What exactly do so many of you see here that you'd consider child endangerment, other than "I wouldn't do it so it must be stupid"?

mrider

Well I tryed not to jump in on this but I failed so here it goes.......as a parent and a rider of 45 years I am looking at this and don't really see the issue.....yes I know but when I was being raised we traveled in the back of pick up trucks and flat beds while under the age of 5. I have raised my daughter on a bike from a lot younger age than this child appears to be and with all the law that is deals gap I'm sure the police have investagated her rigging at least she is trying to make it as safe as it really can be......gloves on a kid how long do you think they would last....lol, I know plenty of young riders that were on bikes long before they could reach the pegs and they tend to be a lot better riders than poeple who reach an age.......lets say 40+ and decide they want to ride a bike and buy all the crap that is feed into it and then they believe they are the best riders ever to stradle a bike which we all know to be BS most of which crash bad in the first 2 years. So instead of putting the lady down for teaching your young one early that give her a hand on trying to make it as safe as she can....oh and if she crashing it won't matter if the kid is in the back not touching the pegs or up front laying on the tank its going to be bad. With that being said I'm not trying to offend anyone here it's just my 2 cents.

I think we all can agree that allot of things in the past were unsafe by todays standards. I am not just focusing on that women, but other people I have known that have done similar actions.  Yes I use to hutch on back of cars in the winter streets, not very smart!!  But keep in mind that when people do dumb things and don't get caught or the child doesn't gets hurt is not the same being safe. You Just Were Lucky!!  Point is don't put children in hazardous situations, its not about police, its about the childs well being and future.

Hoser

Why should we be looking for more restrictions in what is supposed to be a free country?  I can remember riding in the back of a pickup cause my folks did not have a car and all six of us kids are still alive and kicking.  Are we just looking for big brother to take care of us?  Sounds like Oboma and his ilk are winning.  I want no part of it.  And if momma wants to take the young un for a bike ride it is her business.  Not child abuse and not our business. As for me, I will mind my own business, I am tired of big brother.  JMHO.  Hoser   >:(

Apparently being in the back of that pickup you must have smacked you head around a few times. Its not Big Brother to consider keeping children safe and not stealing their childhood and future.  Stupid people is all our business, because it threatens all our well being. because we can't trust ones judgment.  I lost several childhood friends, because their parents didn't think it was anyone's business. Children are not toys, possessions or objects of amusement for us, they are people and need to be kept safe and out of harms way.

Now we're getting to a simple solution, so... nobody should ride until they're 18 and no longer a child.  Got it.

I never put the Lady down for it I just wondered if it was legal to do it on the street.
I also think what she did is safer that just sticking a kid in the front  between the rider and the gas tank.

As stated I have done it with a four wheeler but we just putted around the yard not riding down the Dragon. Most of the time when people go down they seperate from the bike and the bike slides or flips. I don't think it would be good to have your child tied to the bike as it slides or flips down the road or into a guard rail or tree.

Kinda says it all doesn't it.  There is a mindset out there that if it doesn't fit my view, it should be banned.  No matter if it is none of my business, if I don't like it, absolutely nobody should like it or participate in it.

Well, I happen to agree with Hoser.

cookiedough

Not saying I condone this, but if the child seat is securely strapped down NOT budging and the kid is in a 5 point harness in the child seat, don't see much of an issue.

RandyZ

My son rode with me numerous times as he loved the motorcycle.  That said we would mainly cruise 35 mph backroads.  We started when he could reach the pegs.  I would not want to be tied down to a heavy bike as it flipped through the air or a ditch or trees...  I THINK id rather get thrown off in a wreck.

Challenger

I'm with Hoser on this too, Not any of my business, Too many choices disappearing in my life time. But I'm guessing that kid won't end up an obese, lazy video game addicted, twinkie eater riding a scooter around Walmart. He is out with his Mom enjoying the ride.

Michvalk

I rode all my kids on my bikes,(sometimes 2 at a time) and never saw any problem with that, although we were on back roads, and riding slow. I would never have given a thought to being out on the highway until they were large enough to fit on the back properly. Have taken my grandkids also when they were young. I think some people overreact to some situations that are none of their business :cooldude:

All of my kids except for the 1st daughter rode on the motor with me.   Some times it was the CHP motor.     Our mailbox was about 2/3 rd's of a mile from the house.

After they got to the age they were legal, anytime they heard a motor start, they came flying out the door, I want a ride.   If possible daddy provided them with a ride.     Sometimes NO ONE got a ride as daddy had been called in to cover an accident.

Otherwise, I tried to leave early enough they could all get at least a loop around the barn and the 2 other sheds.   Of the last 4 only the 2 youngest ones really got any miles under their little butt on a motor.   The youngest daughter got to ride in all 50 states with me.   Rented a Harley when her and her ex and mom & I went to Hawaii for 3 weeks vacation.   3 years prior to that she made the trip to Alaska with me.   This was about 6 weeks before she got married.

The boy just a few years older than her, he got all the lower 48 and Alaska.   On his Alaska trip we rode the boat up from Washington, and then rode the bike back.   3 Years later one of the boys mom & I took in after his parents were killed in a train/auto get together, he staid in Alaska after he graduated from College.    He got a full ride on a diving scholarship.    He met his future wife (Army Brat, daddy was a 2 star General) in one of his classes.  They now live in Idaho and have 2 adult children.    Both of his kids are native Alaskans.

If they aren't visiting her folks over a Holiday, he will call and ask if he can come and stay for a couple of days.     I keep telling him he doesn't have to ask, just call us in enough advance time to let us know when they will be here.

Serious question- when is the kid old enough?

Is it a matter of reaching the pegs?

I'd say around town for short rides, when they learn how to hold on and not wiggle around.

If taking a road trip, when they can reach the pegs.     I cheated there on my kids. I put a chunk of 4X4 wood on top of the peg and they reached the pegs that way at a fairly early age.   Had a piece of steel underneath the peg to bolt the wood onto so it would not slip and or come off.   In fact I just saw it the other day in the back garage.    Had to scratch my head  as to what it was for.    Wife said isn't that the booster you put on the bikes so the kids could reach the pegs and take highway trips.      Bingo, we have a winner.

+1, Hoser!

Seems like a LOT of you are making the case that MC riding is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, and that if a child is on one, it is CHILD ABUSE!

Me thinks if it is THAT BAD, motorcycles themselves should be banned, and NONE of us can ride.

Sure glad NO CHILD has EVER been harmed riding in a car!  Not one!

Should be banned, car riding hurts kids.  Trains are safer, so are airplanes, so next time you go to Grannies for Christmas, it is against the law to take the car, you MUST take the train or the airplane.

Nanny state, here we come!  Yeha!
