fuel range needs to be extended

Just got back from the Hells Canyon rally and in 95+heat and  pulling a trailer full of gear up things like the Pendleton grade trying to keep up with my crazy wife on her VTX at 75+, my mpg fell sharply to 26. I think I need to get a hold of Roger in Moses Lake!

Yeah, speed, trailer, grade, it all adds up to lower mileage.

Pulling a trailer plus running 75+, 26 mpg sounds about right. Might be able to get an extra 2-3 but not in the mountains. Slowing down to just under 70 mph will make a difference, especially pulling a trailer.

James on the Florida board did something cool with an aluminum tank.  Check out his thread there.  He removes it in the local area but runs it for trips.  He was at Inzane this year.  Another rider in this forum used a similar approach but went with solenoids and a switch to change between aux fuel and main tank.

I just did a trailer run to Alaska and mounted two 2 gallon tanks on the passenger floorboards (one on each side).  Used it twice in Canada when planned fuel stops were closed.  My mileage dropped to 23 in one stretch with speed, hills, and head winds.

I went for a ride with a friend who is a die hard Davidson rider.
He's a great guy and dosent wear the gear, he rides it.
He was laughin at me at every 100 mile gas stop. I let him know the last one to 100mph buys lunch.
Well, he was amazed at how third went to 80 and had a great view from about 35.
T/A truckstop in Wilcox Az. has great fried chicken on the buffet.

I dont mind stopping every 100 miles or so.  I just enjoy riding the Valk. You could add the belly tank.

I want on a ride with 4 other friends, we want from the tri cities in WA to Bend, OR for a all bike rally, I had the only non Harley there lol, on the way down we had a 30 to 40 mph head wind for the first 100 miles and I avg 27 mpg.
After we got pass the Dallis I was up to 35 mpg.
The saturday after the 4th I rode with two friends Barb & Rodger down to the Ave of the Giants to ride thought the Red Woods, once we got to CA the temps were cooler and we were on hwy 101 which is twisty and was a lot of fun and the view of the Ocean and the Red Woods were fantasitc, I can't think of a better way to travel then on a bike.
Now because of the twisty road and also I'm still a new rider, started riding last April, are speed on 101 was around 55 to 65 mph and I stopped 3 times for fuel and I avg 40, 37 & 40 mpg, wow after the first 40 I thought that I did my math wrong but when I saw 37 and 40 mpg again I was a little shocked.  I did have a tune up and new tires put on before my trip but I was still surprised.
On the way home I was on I-5 and was going 75 to 85 mph and my MPG went back down to 30-32 mpg which I think is still pretty good and yes I didn't get a hot rod of a bike for fuel mileage.

Come on over John, get Roger to do your install and we can take off for a ride while he installs it..
I've got two Valks now, or you could ride my 01 and I can ride the BMW. Or we could hang out with Roger while he does the work. I don't think you could go wrong with the belly tank. The only decision you have to be concerned with is whether or not you are going to run OEM pipes or cobras. 2.5 gal tank with the cobras or 3 with the OEM or Mark T's.

That sir is a mighty fine offer! Don't be surprised if I take you up on it. Going to be putting in some OT hours next month to save up for it. I have lots of big touring plans in our future and would definetly like the range increased. As you know some places up here in the PNW and Canada get pretty remote. Thanks for your gracious offer.
