If you don't have a protective sleeve or wallet yet it's probably time. Unless you're switching to 100% cash you will have a chip in your bank and credit cards sooner or later. A close brush with a cell phone is all that is needed to complete a transaction.

I'd bet they will be showing up in most cards eventually, drivers lic. carry permits, etc. I could even see loyalty cards having them eventually.  My new green card has one already and I can imagine the volume of info it has.

You can ask the cc company to issue you a non rfid card in most cases.

Just talked to my CC company about getting a card without the chip.  No Can Do.  Apparently ALL cards will be moving in the chip direction.  At WalMart, the card can no longer be swiped, it must be inserted into the chip reader and remain there until the entire transaction is completed, signature and all.  Which means I'm liable to forget to grab my card since I usually just swipe and put it back in the wallet.

She also said that one of the  purposes of the chip is to PREVENT people from scanning and reading while the card is in the wallet.

I'm confused ...... not that that's anything new.

I don't like  having to insert the card and leave it there.  Lost a few ATM cards in the older machines that held the card until transaction was finished.  Losing the CC would be even more aggravating.

There are two different functions for chips in cards.  Almost all payment cards have the chip that you insert into the bottom of the terminal.  Some also have (PayPass, payWave, Tap & Go) RFID (radio frequency ID) chips.  I think you can still request cards without the RFID chips.  You can buy inexpensive RFID blocking sleeves to put your cards in.  You can probably buy them at most luggage specialty stores, but for sure you can get them at sites like Amazon.

I found it interesting that the bank representative told me that the RIFD(C?) cards are LESS vulnerable to scanning through the wallet.  She said the magnetic strip was more vulnerable.

FWIW, I have my card "instructions" set to send me a text anytime there is a charge made on my card that the card itself is not physically present.  So, when I order online, I immediately get a text that a charge has been made.  Startles me each month when my Verizon bill pays and I get a text, but it does alert me to any purchases that I wasn't there to make.  Nice little feature, I believe.
