I sure hope this is not true,  going to spend 90 per month on hughesnet next week to get higher speed internet and hopefully more reliable with very few outages being satellite internet.  I know it is more than I would like to pay, but the 34 per month on near dial up speed TDS is driving me insane.

When I suffered through satellite internet, I had frequent outages.  Even when the clouds aren't enough to interrupt the TV service, they did wreak havoc with my internet.

And when I had satellite, they had it on a 30 day cycle -- not from 1st of month to 1st of month, but each day was the end of another 30 days.  So when I accidentally went over limit, I was pretty much shut down until I was up to only 80% used.

I've gone back to Verizon wireless broadband, it works almost everywhere.

While the add is about cable, it could just as well be a pretty accurate synopsis of Fed Govt services to us and our (not their) country.

I HAVE NO other option for internet where I live period, that is the problem, so willing to take that chance.  If it goes out more so than satellite TV I currently have which doesn't bother me, then I should be able to break that contract with them for 2 years NO cancellation fee since internet is not working as described or intended.  Believe me, if any other internet provider besides worthless TDS was valid, I would go with them instead.

There was one period of time when I had internet service maybe once or twice a week -- at least, at the times I wanted it.   Could have been available at 3 a.m. but I wasn't -- cloud cover was too consistent to allow the signal.

Before you commit to them, ask questions.   One Microsoft upgrade was enough to push me over the limit and it was about 2 weeks before I was back to the prescribed 80%.  When I asked about increasing my allowance, I was given a price and informed it could not be done until AFTER I had reached the 80%.  During the period before reaching the 80%, I had service, but it was intentionally slowed down so far that dial up would have been much faster.  Websites would consistently time out before loading, etc.

Before I gave up and went to using my cell phone for internet service, I considered having a land line put in just I could have the faster service available through dial up.

You may also find that you have to call to have them come out to readjust the satellite periodically.  I did.

While I will say that I'm concerned the above quote might take this thread down another (much explored on this forum!) path...  Cry

I do get very frustrated when I read that other countries - less financially capable and one would think less technologically sophisticated - have better internet access and at lower prices than do we in this country.  tickedoff

Government protecting the big ISPs (and their campaign dollars)?  FCC or whomever somehow limiting capability?  I don't know, but the US should boast the best internet service in the world at an affordable cost.

Only on hughesnet 7 days now being satellite internet and so far so good.  Speed is fine and they just came  out in december with a new ultra plan 50gb anytime/50gb 2 a.m.-8 a.m. partition I am still trying to figure out using it for netflix.

Problem is there is apparently dozens of software to install online thru like playfreetv or playon that is a software to partition say netflix/hulu to download during the 50gb night partition, but most cost money to download.  Anyone with hughesnet satellite or dishnet or excede (directtv) internet with a free downloadable GB 2a.m.-8 a.m. partition or any nightly partition?  Please let me know-thanks.

50gb anytime each month is plenty for me but with 4 in our house, 2 being kids,  they watch way too much netflix on weekends even on 480p resolution use up around 2gb per weekend for saturday and 2gb for sunday.

I had to do something, TDS dsl internet is not cutting it at all has been down as low last week to ONLY .11meg of service what a joke.  Also cancelling my home phone with TDS next week when bill is due and telling them to shove it where the sun don't shine has been horrible for over 1 year now.  OVERcapacity issue on old eqmt. in town sucks and the worst part is TDS knows what is wrong yet doesn't want to spend any money to fix it.

I've got a running WI better business bureau complaint on TDS and the 2 messages in response to my complaint just proves to the BBB that TDS is lying and not providing what they advertise to their customers locally all around me.  TDS response admits fault, yet state it is a free country to cancel TDS and go elsewhere.  The BBB should run them out of business entirely or demand they upgrade their eqmt. ASAP for all of their internet users.

the only problem you are going to have with hughs net is that they close all incoming ports, if you dont run a vpn or security cameras remotely you should be fine,, down load a download scheduler to schedule your downloads during the bonus times.. also get yourself a bitmeter to keep up with your download usage.. you may have to turn off your modem when not in use because your computer even when turned off is not really off unless you unplug it,, even your modem will use data when idle,, so watch your usage real close and read the forums to see what others are doing to combat that situation,,

Jess,  got the meter setup this past weekend.

Any FREE downloadable download managers off internet that you know of or have used that work good?

I think playontv  or play free tv (something like that) was a charge of 20 bucks (not sure if yearly or just one time download charge?) that hughesnet suggested.

I'll be fine for 50gb anytime if I can partition netflix that the kids use on low def 480p resolution about 2 GB per day if they are on netflix.

Only good thing with hughesnet is they said if the 50 gb anytime is used up each month,  I still get  (or so hughesnet salesman said) faster internet speed of 1.0-1.4 megs download speed which is still better than my .50 up to 1.0 megs of TDS internet speed of which I have been paying for 5 megs for over 2 years now.

Yah, it will be 90 bucks per month, but if I drop TDS entirely both home phone line and their near useless DSL internet, that is 55 bucks total so only another 35 dollars per month to actually get a real high speed internet.  Not cheap, but if you had to pull out your hair to wait to watch a 2-3 minute youtube video even taking 10-15 minutes due to buffering,  you'd be upset as well needing to switch.  Netflix is useless almost with speeds under 1.0 meg with TDS severe buffering (circle spinning like forever to catch up)

i cant think of the meter i was using right off hand but i think the modem has one built in also but you need to know how to enter your modem to find out,,
another thing i thought of is the phone VOIP using satellite,, there will be a 2 second delay from the time you start talking to the time the other end hears you start talking and vice versa,, its a pain and you will talk over each other,, i use magic jack and am satisfied with it..i paid 100 dollars for 5 years phone service..i will look for the meter i used and let ya know.. yea even the slow speed is better than dsl..
