Those horns are strictly whimsical?

Yes and no...when it was cedar shake, you'd need a galvanized cap to cover a 3-way joint where those ridges come together...so functional...they needed a cap. The whimsical part is them saying, "Hey, if we gotta have a cap, it may as well be an ornament!"

They valued the aesthetic...form was at least as important as function...it shows throughout the house.

Not bad for the time available...

There's more than 8 hours of work in that thing...getting it this far...nowhere near perfection...BUT...it was never perfect. Solder, galvanizing, and paint were extremely rough ~115 years ago...but since it lives around 40 feet off the ground...perfection was never required.

Nice.

Congratulations to you, and a beautiful house too.

Good choice of shingles! They tie in well with the era and architectural style of the house.

Thanks! I'm thrilled with how it's coming out...so is the roofing company...although the pattern on the tower is absolutely kicking their asses...

Also...roof dragon awaits...

Roof Dragon is installed...

Tower is almost done...Today has been all about the tower. There is an art...to putting *that* shingle on a cone...and they had to call in the artist.

It is *REALLY* coming together.

All those noises you hear is just the wind blowing outside.     We had that all the time when I was a kid growing up in Western Iowa.

Scared sheetless the 1st couple of nights, after that I lsept through that stuff.

Meanwhile...back at the Old Vic...

Insurance Company: "Yeah yeah new roof yada yada. Who cares? You need new porch rails NOW or no insurance for you."

Sigh. Always something...damn hard to get ahead in this world..

Now I gotta figure out how to put something on the house I can afford that "looks" Queen Annish but still meets the modern code....which...basically says in 50 feet of 3' tall porch rail a 4" ball can't pass through it.

See...irony of ironies...railings are a choking hazard...

While tempting, choking the insurance man on the porch is a bad idea.

I have heard of people doing temporary fixes on railings, just to qualify on insurance or to pass Code enforcement approval.  Like chicken wire with staples.  Looks like hell but may be worth it in the short run.  Cheap, easy on, easy off.  Or something like that.

I threw the nasty old rusted railing to my half-flight rear walkout away 20 years ago.  I have no railing.  But if I ever want to sell, I'll have to come up with something.

You are probably correct.

My roof and gutters cost me out of my pocket after the Insurance Company paid their share $27,500, and it is only a 70'X60' square type like house.     Oh, forgot, that also included the back garage, which is a 30X20 normal roof slope.

Hail tore all my shingles and gutters to ribbons about 7 months ago.

Insurance company originally told me hail couldn't do that much damage.     Took them to court and provided pictures of 10 other fixtures that the roof was shredded.      Insurance came through, but not to what I thought was their fair share.

Daniel , In a pinch I bought cheap wrought iron railing (fake) from Menards. I installed it so as not to damage it in any way. It passed inspection. We later installed what we wanted. It was still in code ,but took more time than we had at the time. We then returned the railing to Menards. We did not feel bad about doing this as we were building a lot and our bills thru them were usually around 20g's per month.

On the Victorian look and code , acrylics are your friend as they can be used for the spacing code and not really show.

I'd say do what you can afford now to get it insured, then put nice rails in when you can afford to.  I think a nice rail would add to rather than detract from the look of your house.

Ideas are gelling...details detailing...I think I'm going full blown Queen Anne...lots of spindles...multi-color paint job. Can't quite start yet...gotta replace one of the columns...it's on order and should get here next week.
