Those are nubbies, not nipples.

I clip each one off on my new fronts (and scrub off the release agent with bleach and soap)............ though my last new Michelin Commander II front didn't have any nubbies at all.

I do prefer nipples to nubbies.

Only time I've ever stared at a picture of a dragon on a wall and looked for nipples. I imagine I always will now.  Wink

Well, as I said my new Michelin fronts do not have nubbies, and very little if any release agent.  And that tire grabbed the pavement very well right from brand new.

But several years back, I got a new Metz front installed, and rode it out of the shop bay and promptly dumped the bike in the parking lot.  I was just rolling and did not turn hard, but the front end just slipped right out from under me (like on ice) and pitched me on my ass; with no gear, gloves or helmet.  I was taking it out to park, then pay the bill.  The bike hit the guards and slid a few feet, but no damage otherwise, except to my pride.  I've dropped my bikes working on them and pushing them around and forgetting the kickstand is not down, but I had not fallen off a bike under power for 30 years or so before this, and it pissed me off.

I was being careful, but apparently not careful enough. It was pretty covered with release agent.  I decided then and there it would never happen again, so every front I get (rear car tires), gets every nubbie clipped off flush, and scrubbed hard of release agent with bleach and soap and hard brushes (this is probably more important than clipping the nubbies), before instal.  It's not a big job.

It was the only new front tire of 40+ years of riding I ever fell on (though I have slipped on a few).  Maybe it's overkill, but I won't fall on a new front tire again.

Good Idea Jess,,,could be a contributing factor, the crap they put on the tire to slip it on the rim.

That crap can't help. Moisture plus release agent is most likely what make the new ones slip.

The 100 miles crap is just that.

They tell you to be careful for 100 miles on a fresh meat.

I say do what you are doing is much safer, than taking a chance for 100 miles of pounding the

pavement.
