GREAT BIG BROWN BEAR

Sometimes
they say you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you, but every so often, the
bear may just have a little sit down with you instead. Drew Hamilton is an
employee of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game who was camping at the McNeil
River State Game Sanctuary and Refuge. He was watching other bears fish in the
river below when a huge Alaskan brown bear walks up to his campsite and sits
down right next to him.

Thankfully,
Hamilton kept his composure. The bear appears to be pretty calm and, although it
is definitely a natural response,
acting scared and screaming, running may
have agitated the bear into action (and/or one or more of the other bears down
in the river below). He managed to capture this incredible footage on a very
close encounter, before the bear eventually walks away again.

I must say this is one cool find Patrick.  I am guessing these bears are use to having humans around these fishing grounds every year, but this would - well how can one not be terrified.

They are used to seeing people. But what 99% of their attention is devoted to is catching or stealing fish. They are still EXTREMELY dangerous. They don't normally tolerate other bears or humans that close . But the abundance of fish overrides that.

First, there is this old expression about watching your six.  On bikes, or in bear country.

Second, that boy was hopefully stuffed full of fish.

Third, I would not do any screaming or sprinting, but don't think I could have resisted just casually strolling away.... somewhere, anywhere.

One wonders if one just sat there and quietly crap one's pants, would that be offensive to the bear's sensitive nose, or would it agitate him?

2funny Jess, I don't know if it would offend or agitate him. But it might make him curious.  Smiley

Yeah Dan, you know I like you but I don't know if that was a wise move getting off the bike with the sow separated from her 2 cubs.  Shocked

thank you meathead

if you look at momma her ears are up not down so she was cool with it

I had vehicles in front and behind me to crawl under if I had too

wise ?

I thought about it for a minute before I got off for a better shot

risky.....yes

after being blind and paralyzed in the hospital twice momma would have been merciful compared to what's waiting for me

now for the rest of my life I can say I got off the bike

and what we do in life echoes thru eternity

dan

ps meathead I was venting in a prior post thanks for you patience

Hey we all make our own decisions. It's cool  cooldude I might have and probably would have done the same thing. I love watching bears in the wild ! Just wanted to point out it was risky. Smiley
