I really enjoyed talking with RJ.  I met him years ago at one of Texas Ranger's BBQs.  Then I had the opportunity to stop by in July of 2014 and have lunch with RJ in Des Moines.  We became friends then and I found out about where Inzane would be in 2015, but then he made me promise not to tell anyone he had told me.  I honored that promise until now.  We talked about how he could attend Inzane in 2015 and I said I would come by and ride with him in escort to his truck as he went up.  We talked about his concentrators that he needed to breathe and I used the 'net to find places where concentrators would be in Spearfish. Then I headed back to Greenfield and RJ headed back home.  We had a picture taken before we left, though.



We continued emailing back and forth about the trip to Inzane over the following months, but at some point, his doctors and the Mrs. put their feet down and told him he could not go, it was too dangerous.  I decided that I would go visit with him in June on my way to Inzane and did so, arriving at 6PM in Des Moines after leaving Arlington at 6am.  We talked for about 3 hours, and I learned about his adventures in the Marines, listening to his fascinating stories and me talking about my family and adventures in my life. I was pretty tired after my trip so had to head off to the hotel around 9pm but felt like we knew each other a lot better.  

A few other riders stopped by at some time on that trip to visit with RJ this year.  I know they are happy they did.

I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to know this hero, this honest man who loved motorcycling and was open to being friends with someone like me.

Rest in peace, RJ.  You were one of a kind.  The world is a poorer place without you.

Like many of you, I've known RJ for quite some time.  Got to share a few miles on the Valks, and  was fortunate enough to have him visit my home (even my boys remember getting rides on his trike).  Was trading emails with him up to yesterday...

Sorry for your loss   he was telling me on Wednesday how much the hospital food sucked , had hoped he was getting better . He was family to us and will be greatly missed. He and Frank are probably arguing about which road they should take to cruise around heaven.

Just woke up and turned on the computer this AM and saw this.

I am so sorry to hear this.

I first met RJ at Homecoming, 2nd Inzane and we hit it off.

 We were constantly comparing our ages and we had something in common, Korean War Vets. RJ had it bad in Korea with five Purple Hearts and I had it good, no combat.

Since both of us were stubborn ole farts, we got along fine. However, RJ really outdid me in remembering birthdays, having experiences, and in general, able to talk about anything.

The last time that I saw him was here in New Haven.  He stopped in and we did some talking over the kitchen table.  Before that, I saw him at the last CBR when he was feeling much better (see the pic)

RJ was ornery and the proof of that was when he talked me into giving the finger in a pic taken at Paducah. (Thanks Dave, I thought that pic finally got lost )

Condolences ans prayers go out to RJ's family who I never met but wished that I did.

Unfortunately, RJ stopped showing up at VRCC events about the time I started attending.  So I only got to meet him through his posts, I can only imagine how much more entertaining he would be in person.  Rest in Peace, RJ, answering the call to his final mission.  A true hero.  Semper Fi!

I 1st met RJ in person at the CBR in 2008, before that I knew him from his posts on the Ohio board and through the people on the Ohio board when we met up for various events and at the hoopla.
my 1st Christmas card every year was from RJ.    I will miss his posts on the vrcc boards.

Godspeed my friend. 

I was concerned when he got quiet recently, and had emailed him to check on him, kidding him that he must be in training... preparing for Thanksgiving Day. He always bragged out Red's pecan pie, and how much he enjoyed when she baked him one.  I thought of him yesterday as I ate my slice (as I do anytime there's pecan pie).

You could always count on some fun brewing when it was time to meet up at a gathering. RJ always had some good clean mischief in his bag of tricks.

If we had a museum, MGM would need a prominent place (even IF it wasn't fast-black).

You're already missed ol' friend.

Ross-da prez-and I were going to take a day after Asheville and go visit R J. One thing led to another and we didn't get to Des Moines. This past June on the way back from Spearfish we made that stop in Des Moines. Red and R J treated us like Family. Opened their home to us and shot the breeze fer a spell. I had no idea the first time we talked in person would be the last. We have P Md each other and breezed on the cell. Saw M G M and the Chevy Trike in the cave. Hope I'm NOT too out of line saying I have lost a FRIEND.  Fair winds and following seas R J. FOREVER R I P.

This just blows me away!    He was the first to welcome me to the forum and we dogged each other back and forth. We were brothers in LE and we on ocassion put something in the "last word" thread. I blamed him for any bad weather we got over here. My condolences to his family and friends. I'm saddened by the loss of a good man, a friend I never met but feel as though I've known him for years. We here at VRCC have lost a great contributor to this forum.

The only time I met RJ was at the last Covered Bridge Ride. I remember we talked about his trike, because at that time a good friend of mine was wanting to build one with a V8. RJ and I emailed and talked on the phone several times after that ride, and he coached us on how to build it. We did get it built, but only with his advise and guidance. He was a very nice man willing to help others and would always have a good post to read. RIP RJ

He always gave me crap about having a much younger wife. Also gave me crap when we divorced.    I forget what he said but it was funny. Even tho the VRCC x-mas card giving has died out, I still did receive a card every yr. Always a neat card. Gonna miss the card this yr. Even some holidays and my b-day I'd always have a e-card in my inbox.
Met him at one of the CBR rides. He got tired of taking pictures so he gave me the camera. I took pix for about a hrs.
