10 US Sailors, 2 Small Boats in Iranian Custody after 'Lost Contact' Jan 12, 2016 | by Richard Sisk Two U.S. Navy rigid-hulled boats and their crews were being held by Iran Tuesday after apparently becoming disabled while traveling from Kuwait to Bahrain, the Pentagon said. "Earlier today, we lost contact with two small U.S. naval craft en route from Kuwait to Bahrain," a senior defense Department official said. "We subsequently have been in communication with Iranian authorities, who have informed us of the safety and well-being of our personnel. We have received assurances the sailors will promptly be allowed to continue their journey." Another official said that the boats may have drifted into Iranian waters near Farsi Island after experiencing mechanical problems. A total of about 10 Navy personnel were believed to be aboard the boats. Iran's semi-official Fars news agency said that the boats had illegally traveled more than a mile into Iranian territorial waters before being intercepted. Fars said that forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Navy had confiscated GPS equipment to "prove that the American ships where ‘snooping' around in Iranian waters." http://www.military.com/daily-news/2016/01/12/10-us-sailors-2-small-boats-iranian-custody-lost-contact.htmlhttp://www.foxnews.com/politics/2016/01/12/us-sailors-boats-held-by-iran-in-persian-gulf.html?intcmp=hpbt1

believe it or not it was just yesterday that I learned about the USS Pueblo which was captured in January 1968. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Pueblo_(AGER-2)
I was reading about that incident when the news of today's incident was on the computer.

Don't worry... John Kerry is negotiating... Iran will get to keep our boats, our Navy personnel, and we will probably have to give them a carrier, some planes and Wyoming... And Obama (pbuh) has appointed Michelle to mount a social media campaign...

64-68 2 tours off Nam and 2 tours direct support Nam. Ex Navy Airedale. Far as the rag heads having OUR Navy personnel-really don't know what to think but might be a good idea to return them-soonest. Course with that sorry assed excuse pos for potus and the traitor kerry-it is what it is. That whole unsupporting cast sickens me. AND I served under l b j and r s mcnamara. RIDE SAFE.

From the media reports it seems that one or both US boats ran aground or suffered a breakdown and drifted into Iranian waters.
I'm sure the Iranians will spin this as going out to assist and rescue the boats and crews.
I would expect the boats and crews to be released and back in the fold in short order. Cool heads should prevail and let this play out nice and neat.
If it goes sour, make them pay and dearly.

If Iran wants to "make points" with the US - they will be returned in good condition, in a reasonable period of time. I would imagine that the Iranians will want to ask them what happened, and the smart thing for them is to tell the truth (minus the obvious).

And yes the admin can ban or restrict me from here but as long as the constitution is still written on the right of FREE speech I am good Your count is way off. I am the admin who took the time to remove some thirty posts that you, meathead, and another took the time to puke all over the board. My serious advice is that perhaps you and meathead should go out of your ways to not reply to one another on this board. If you really do, either or both, need to do that to one another do it privately or on your own message board. I administer this board on a part time basis and honestly enough it turns into a much larger task than it needs to be when I have to go into babysitter mode. You might want to reread the Constitution. The right of free speech does not provide you the opportunity to post whatever you wish on any message board other than your own. Truthfully, you have said correctly. It does not guarantee you, or anyone else, the right to continue to participate on this message board.

I seem to recall Iran holding U.S. prisoners during the whole Iran Nuke Deal last year. I recall opponents asking why Obama didn't demand the release of the prisoners as part of the deal and his reply was typical garbage,....that they didn't want to muddy the waters. So, we've had several State of the Union Addresses while Iran was holding U.S. citizens.

Released in good health with all equipment intact? Doesn't really seem to be a hostile action to me. And, as usual, Obama was criticized for his handling of the situation. It seems to me it was handled pretty damn well...and all while delivering his final, and best, SOTU address. http://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2016-01-13/us-sailors-held-by-iran-expected-to-be-released-soon

10 US sailors in 2 US naval boats enter Iranian territorial waters and at least one boat is disabled.
What should have Iranian forces have done?
I think the issue was handled with tact and class on both sides.
Given the strained diplomatic relationship with Iran and that the boat were in their territorial waters, I'm kinda surprised they didn't go with a knee jerk reaction and try to destroy them.
Calling this some kind of Hostage situation is really over the top. Never came close to that level.
You can't walk into your neighbor's house and claim they kidnapped you. If they lock you in their basement for 2 weeks, then like, ok maybe. But that ain't what happened.

The 'captured' servicemen apologized. When that happens, name, rank and number only. But, its good Iran did what it did, or, what we think they did. They still may have some propaganda photos that we aren't aware of yet. I don't trust that country.
So, what does uncle joe say to the newscasters. No, there was no apology and no need to apologize. uncle joe being uncle joe I guess he should be given credit for getting something half right.

There is more to this than is being disclosed at this time.
The crews lose communication with the Pentagon while in transit and are suppose rendezvous with another boat to refuel AND something happens to their GPS units AND the Republican guard locate them.
They are boarded and searched and taken into custody and their boat ( I guess which is towed ) into their port. The crew is detained indoors over night and the boat with mechanical issues is "repaired" over night by Iran's mechanics?

I am always doubtful of of forwarded emails that claim to be the testimonials of various statesmen or retired military who tell us what we want to hear. I googled Matt Braken and found that he was indeed a former navy Seal trained in underwater demolition in the 1980's and that he served on the east coast UDT. In 1983 he headed a Naval Special Warfare detachment to Bierut. He now lives in Florida with his family. He authors military action books set in the near future focused on the possible loss of American freedoms. Sounds as if he could be the author of the following email. A former SEAL Officer's take on the recent Iran/U.S. Sailors incident:
"I hope none of my FB friends are gullible enough to believe they strayed into Iranian waters and had mechanic problems nonsense. I rarely pull out my dusty old trident, but in this case, here goes. I was a Navy SEAL officer in the 1980s, and this kind of operation (transiting small boats in foreign waters) was our bread and butter.
Today, these boats both not only had radar, but multiple GPS devices, including chart plotters that place your boat's icon right on the chart. The claim by Iran that the USN boats "strayed into Iranian waters" is complete bull$h!t.
For an open-water transit between nations, the course is studied and planned in advance by the leaders of the Riverine Squadron, with specific attention given to staying wide and clear of any hostile nation's claimed territorial waters. The boats are given a complete mechanical check before departure, and they have sufficient fuel to accomplish their mission plus extra.
If, for some unexplainable and rare circumstance one boat broke down, the other would tow it, that's why two boats go on these trips and not one! It's called "self-rescue" and it's SOP.
This entire situation is in my area of expertise. I can state with complete confidence that both Iran and our own State Department are lying. The boats did not enter Iranian waters. They were overtaken in international waters by Iranian patrol boats that were so superior in both speed and firepower that it became a "hands up!" situation, with automatic cannons in the 40mm to 76mm range pointed at them point-blank. Surrender, hands up, or be blown out of the water. I assume that the Iranians had an English speaker on a loudspeaker to make the demand. This takedown was no accident or coincidence, it was a planned slap across America's face.
Just watch. The released Sailors will be ordered not to say a word about the incident and the Iranians will have taken every GPS device, chart-plotter etc off the boats, so that we will not be able to prove exactly where our boats were taken.
The "strayed into Iranian waters" story being put out by Iran and our groveling and appeasing State Dept. is utter and complete BS from one end to the other." - Matt Bracken
