A fine is a tax you pay for doing wrong, a tax is a fine for doing well.

The town did a entire town wide re-assessment of everyone's property taxes.  Mine went dow $2,000!

Approx 30% saw a decrease, 60% are staying roughly the same, and about 20% are getting an increase.  Of course those who got an increase are grieving, and they have that right.  The town sent out an e-mail explaining why many went up.  People upgraded and added on to their homes without permitting the work was the biggest reason.  Also, the last town wide assessment was 60 years ago.

The folks who got an increase are yelling very loudly.  So loud that there is going to be a vote to institute a 5 year phase in of the new taxes.

BUT...........  Not only do they want a 5 year phase in to those who received increases, they want those who have been overpaying all this time to phase in their tax reductions over the 5 years as well.

WHO ARE THESE INSANE PEOPLE WHO THINK UP THESE THINGS AND WHY ISN'T THERE SOMEONE SAYING "NO, THAT'S JUST PLAIN WRONG"?  "INSTEAD OF CONTINUING TO OVERTAX THEM, WE SHOULD BE THANKING THEM."

There is no such person in gov't.

I feel bad for those who got increases (in my area there are no cheap taxes to begin with) but it's not my fault.  Why should I continue to overpay.  I'm not getting any of the money I overpaid all these years back, why do some people think I should keep overpaying, knowingly, and with documents that confirm I am over paying, to make up for those who under paid?

Sounds like the same damn tune all over again.  Work hard, do the right thing, make investments in our futures, and someone thinks I owe them, more.

politicians-Sometimes-hell most times-the very utterance of that word makes me feel less than well. Those pesky politicians are the same ones who "borrowed" from MY money-Social Security-and NEVER paid it back. Gary-the fact your taxes went DOWN is a good thing for now. Hope they don't consider going down a F up but be prepared!  Roll Eyes Did you REALLY expect a refund on the overpay?   2funny  Go fer a ride and clear yer mind!  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Phasing in (and out) taxes sounds like socialist mantra.

I'm frankly surprised anyone's actually went down.  We all went down after 2008, but it's been up up up ever since.  I could almost buy a nice used Valk for one year's taxes.  I suppose you could get three.

This pretty much covers the subject.

They raise taxes because they can and use the money as they see fit.

One day when I was bored, and with no paper and pencil, I figured that over 20 years of living here, I will have paid about $350,000 in property and school taxes.  I'm at year 14 of that 20.  After 20, we're probably gonna downsize.  Both kids will be done with college.

At least my mortgage will be done in 2.5 years and I'll only have to worry about the taxes.  Many seniors leave my county because of the taxes alone.  Sucks.

My brain agrees with you, but my stomach wants to throw up.  To have it presented to me that I've overpaid, and then to hear that "people" feel bad for those who did the wrong thing and want me, the one who did the right thing, to CONTINUE overpaying so the ones who did the wrong thing won't be too hurt too badly, but it's OK to CONTINUE to hurt those who did the right thing.   uglystupid2

Just because your assessed value went down, don't count on your tax bill getting reduced. They will just adjust the mill rate. They need the same amount of money to operate. They are never going to lower taxes without cutting expenditures, and we all know that will happen right?  NOT!

The people that got the raise in assessment are really screwed, their assessment went up, and so will the mill rate to compensate for the large percentage of homes that were lowered.

Ahhh, the tax man, makes the hair on my neck, er back (I'm Italian) stand straight up.
Back in '08 and '09 after the last $$ meltdown. Property values where I call home took a nose dive. People started rumbling about why taxes did not go down  2funny , to match the lower value of there property. Here in Portage County Ohio. The county values and manages your property taxes. Long story short, good f*^ki#g luck! Once "they" get it. "They" never have any intention of giving it back!  Angry.

"The folks who got an increase are yelling very loudly.  So loud that there is going to be a vote to institute a 5 year phase in of the new taxes."

The quote above really hit home! Read that statement a few times. Keep in mind G-Man said, "that about 20 percent received an increase" The loud minority!  80 Percent of the town benefitted so to speak. (I'd rather see my values go up. Kind of like money in the bank, long term.) No matter what level of gov't city, state or federal level. This is the group the politicians bow, cater too. Decisions are not made for what is best for the majority. G-Man can you tell me what "part of town" saw the increases in values?
The gov't. wonders why the natives are getting restless. This is a microcosm of what we are seeing on the fed level, with our upcoming election.

No specific part.  We were told that the primary reason that people received increases was because they updated/upgraded their homes without permitting the work so the town didn't make any adjustments based on the higher value.  People got away with this for as long as 60 years.  60 years ago was the last townwide assessment.  Some went up as much as 120% we were told.

Also commercial property taxes were hit with lots of increases.  You know what that means....... higher prices to the consumer.

Yep, living in a high price, high tax county has always meant that if you pull permits for home improvements, you know you will get a tax increase.  Thus there is a great stimulus to do all such improvements without pulling any permit (don't get caught).  When using licensed, insured, bonded contractors they always pull permits so as not to jeopardize their business licenses.  But when doing it yourself or using local illegal labor, pulling permits is stupid (so long as you are not caught, and of course you build to code anyway).

And the irony is, when I had a major electrical heavy-up on my home that certainly required a permit, the county never ever even sent out an inspector at all.  Which leads you to believe that permits are not about safety at all, they are just about revenue to the G (the cost of the permit, and the increase in taxes).
