I have a 98 standard. Ive had it just at a year now. When I first took ownership of this beautiful fat girl, I did the usual and changed all fluids. Brake, oil, rear end and coolant. Because you really don't know what PO did before. Well, since then I had been thinking about wanting to get the rear end out and clean, grease and install new O-rings. At the same time I wanted to go to the darkside. Also I have installed a custom exhaust and was having backfire, running rich and popping, so I was thinking and had been advised about 38 pilots. So I had all these things I would like to get done but I've never worked on a motorcycle before. So was thinking about BBF and his travels and he was coming through this month. Well, I got impatient and decided, Ok lets go for it.
So after two weeks in the garage, working maybe an hour or two a day. And some days waiting on parts or polishing my rear wheel. The fat girl is SINGING LIKE SHE HAS NEVER SUNG BEFORE.
I was pleasantly surprised to find everything I opened up to be in superb condition. PO did a great job.

So DArkside is awesome. Never going back. Interstate springs, needles, 38 pilots, intake O-rings, rear end service, polished wheel, dan marc fuel valve, rebuilt petcock and digi sync. She is a beautiful beast.
So I just want to thank everyone that has not only done write ups on this board/forum but also the input from everyone through the years. Search is a great friend.
I am a retired aircraft mechanic and I'm not afraid to try mechanical things I don't know. But because of all of you, I went in with a lot more confidence and got it done.

THANK YOU ALL. cooldude  cooldude  cooldude

Me too, I think there are more than a few on this board. I'm still working at it, trying to perfect my craft... Grin Grin

Roid, good on you for diving in, helps you learn. One thing though....you installed #38 slow jets, not pilots. The pilot jet/screws are the adjustments you make from underneath the carb, on the outside.  cooldude
