http://www.wsj.com/articles/states-wire-up-roads-as-cars-get-smarter-1483390782

our stolen tax dollars will be used...
With many states struggling to cover basic highway maintenance, planners say billions of federal dollars likely will be needed to wire the nation’s more than 4 million miles of paved roads and 250,000 intersections.

the day a car drives ME anywhere being in the drivers seat is the day I stop driving period.    Cry

fix the potholes and roads vs. worrying about electrical crap that drives us places.   uglystupid2

My neighbor says he will never buy a car again without blind spot monitors which I think flash or beep at  you in the side mirrors when making lane changes.  I asked him does he have neck problems not able to look over his shoulder?   uglystupid2

I only am doing snapshot with Progressive insurance just switched monitoring our driving habits for 6 long frickign months to save 10% discount (100 bucks every 6 months) but totally disagree with the whole concept of having an onboard diagnostic tool monitoring at what time and how many miles I drive and how hard I brake and accelerate.   What is worse is this plug in beeps at you if brake or accelerate too hard, gotta find a way to insulate and duct tape that plug in P.O.S. so as to not hear it beeping at me, it will drive me nuts.    tickedoff

At least everybody in the car can text legally with that type of vehicle. If they get in an accident they can blame the car. I see lawsuits and fatalities with this technology.

I agree, the one time the car does not drive right for you and gets into an accident,  ford or gm or whatever mfg. will be sued for millions.  Just like the hot coffee incident at mcd's.

I sure  hope this technology is not in EVERY vehicle in say 10 years as standard eqmt. or I will be very upset and wish ALL Americans stand up and NOT buy these vehicles thus putting the mfgs. on the spot to get rid of this crap.  I have bought a few new vehicles and refused to sign the paperwork unless the dealership programs thru the onboard diagnostic tool  to NOT have the seat belt reminder beep at me for not buckling up.  One dealer refused and told me cannot do it a safety issue, I told him sorry no sale and walked out on the deal over it.  My car,  I can do what I want to it.  Another dealer told me ignorantly there is a new law in WI where police officers can give me a ticket if they see my heavy duty rubber husky liners over the installed lock in clip floor mats for not being secure.  I said B.S. on that one show me the law.   Dealers will say anything to think we are stupid buying their 150 dollar floor mats that lock in place.  Nice floor mats, but not worth over 100 bucks.

I think the only way self driving cars will work, is when they are all self driving. You mix self drivers, and drivers with their heads up their asses, and your looking for trouble cooldude

I can't see self driving cars working from door to door. What would happen if a small bag of garbage was to fall off a truck and in up in the middle of the street. A self driving car would have to "Fail Safe" and stop. It would not be able to tell if it was a bag of garbage, a dog, a ball or a child. We have vision systems now that can pick out small details but they can't See. They just compare to what is normal. They can not see a object for what it is. You can see a bag of rags and most likely tell it from a child in a coat because you have seen both many times before. But then you can still make a mistake. So you would have to have the cars Fail safe and stop for small objects in the road.

You would then have people screwing with them. Throw something in front of it just to get the car to slide to a stop. Or how about the black market to make your car run faster or turn harder. How would that work with the normal self driving cars? Or how about a bomb in one of these driving to your Ex's house?

I do think that a lane or lanes could be added to the interstates that could handle self driving cars. You could "Auto" merge into and out of these lanes. You could still have wrecks but it would be more like wrecks with trains. that does not happen to often because you know the train will not drive off the tracks. The self driving car would be in their own lane with very limited access.

Thanks, David in Fletcher NC.

Before I ever spent $30000-$50000 on a car with all that junk I'd buy a restomod 60s mustang or something like it from the mid 60s or 70s.. I have a radio that is probably 8 years old in my truck and in 4 years haven't figured it out yet. Never would want all kinds of gadgets in my vehicle.

I am in 100% agreement on gadgets in vehicles never figuring or wanting to figure them out, but come one, an 8 year old radio not able to figure out yet???  What is the issue on that one?? bluetooth?  voice recognition?  or not knowing how to figure out how to turn up volume or change/set radio stations?   Grin

First thing my techy IT neighbor did when I bought a new truck wanting to come see it was ask where on the 7 inch screen is the NAV function the salesman installed thru my wife's smartphone app?  REALLY?  Like we need NAV to drive 95% of our driving back and forth same 30 mile route we take most of the time?

I've been screwing with that radio of an on for a couple of years , not instructions because it was with the truck bought used. My eyesight is such that I can't hardly see the icons on the 1/8 th inch buttons of which there are about ten of them an I'm not going to sit there fighting with it. All I want is a am-fm  radio with two knobs. on-off and tuning. Is that too much to ask? Besides If for some reason I pull the battery I have to start all over. Don't get me started on bluetooth or whatever, my teeth already hurt. I'm old school and don't need all that stuff and don't want it tickedoff
