YES , I know my service number , I was drafted then enlisted after I was in. I also remember the number of the truck I was assigned. It was a 1947 deuce and a half. 41162637.

How about your Service Number?......
I'm not talking about SSN......even tho I know it is used now-a-days.
Do you remember your Service Number?
As I read thu the posts and some were talking about their service number. I kept thinking I don't remember mine or anything about having one. I googled it just now to find out it was done away with by my time. Whew ! I was starting to think I was even more forgetful than I thought.

There have always been, and continue to be military service numbers.  At some point, it changed from some random number to your social security number (mine was always my SSN).

So it cannot have been done away with during your service.

It is on your DD214.

So you are as forgetful as you thought.   Wink

It's great that mine was my SSN, so I could have my entire federal file (military and civilian) hacked by hackers.... twice apparently.  The G has been good about telling me about these hacks.  I just wonder why they didn't prevent the hacks to begin with.  Course, when I logged into the hotline for the free security protection, the website was entirely FUBAR.  Of course it was.

Oh, it's because it's the G.... that which screws up all it surveys.  And for only a third of all I ever earned.

I'm sure the Russians did it.  My information is important to them.  They can now blackmail me for my conviction at 17 for underage possession of beer.  Now I can be forced to give up the codes for the nuclear football.  I actually don't know the codes..... but since it's the G, it's probably 1,2,3,4,5.

BTW, here's the dates of change over to SSNs.

Branch of Service          Date of Changeover
Army and Air Force           July 1, 1969
Navy and Marine Corps   January 1, 1972
Coast Guard                   October 1, 1974

I'm not really sure from which site, but I doubt it was a military site.

Since it happened long after I separated from active service in '92; and left USDVA in 2010.  I only held a secret clearance.  Where ever it came from, they got it all.

The only protection I have is that they got millions of us.

And joking aside, it was almost certainly the Chinese.

I guess the Chinese view me favorably. They left me alone. Or maybe they value lawyers higher than butchers ?  2funny

THIS turned out to be a rather good post if I do say so myself. As different as we all were it amazes me how similar we all are After putting on a Uniform. People can say what they want-well up to a point-but we All Changed during and after serving. I came away from my hitch with a much better understanding of what I am capable of and a much deeper Love of this country of Ours. I am Familiar with a couple of names on the Vietnam Memorial Wall and my Prayer for them is that they Did NOT perish in vain. If I received nothing else out of my hitch I Did come away with some survival skills. I KNOW I'll NEVER be able to work the flight deck again but I DO Have the memories. To All my Comrades that took up arms when asked or Told-Thank You. RIDE SAFE.

I still check the gig line, my shoes are clean and I still keep my hair cut fairly short. When I hear somebody on t.v. mention the constitution of the U.S., I still remember part of the oath we all took to protect that constitution. I have matured much in the last  46 years since basic training and the oath I took then has much more meaning to me now.

52 years ago today was my first day of basic.....still use the gig line, boots/shoes typically clean and shined but NOT to the standard of basic training, remember my service number and use the phonetic alphabet constantly when dealing with anyone on the phone (often get compliments and a thank-you for making letters / spelling so easy for listener), still hang my shirts with left sleeve facing out....probably a few (?) other things I don't remember as well....

I was a USAF 431x1 Tactical Aircraft Crew Chief.  The one trait that I have never stopped is I can and will work on my car in the rain, snow, whatever.  I know that 99.9% of the time I can quit when it get's to be too much, unlike being on the flight line.  So, it make's it easy.  My neighbors think I'm crazy.  But, hell, at my house it's far easier than being 14 aircraft out on the flight line in 15 degrees with a 30 knot wind.

I also always check my gig line.  I have respect for commissioned officers.  Fellow veterans are my brothers and sisters.  I'm good with crushing those that threaten my country.
