Me and a buddy are planning on going to Daytona bike week this spring, problem is, at that time in upstate NY it's still barely breaking freezing. We have a smallish enclosed trailer that we're going to put our bikes in and drive south just far enough until it gets tolerable/semi enjoyable to ride, at least in the 50's or so. The plan is to find somewhere to ditch the truck/trailer, then ride the rest of the way, and ride back about a week later to trailer home again.

The only concern is somewhere "safe" to leave the truck/trailer for a week. Meaning, it won't get towed/ticketed/broken into. Not sure if we could just leave it in in the back of a wal-mart/shopping plaza parking lot, lock the trailer and the hitch pins up, and forget about it. Well lit area, and there won't really be anything worth stealing in the trailer anyway, and wal-mart openly allows (if not encourages) free RV parking, thought it was unlikely there would be any problem. I just want to avoid coming back to find it got towed or booted or something, waste a lot of time and probably cost a fortune.

Someone else suggested a public transit park-and-ride lot, which I guess isn't a bad idea either, since they're always free and easy to find in any city. Neither of us have any family/friends in the area we'd likely be looking to get out of the truck and on the bikes (Eastern VA/ NC area) we could leave it with.

If someone is along the I-95 corridor in the VA/NC/SC area I wouldn't mind offering a reasonable fee to leave the truck/16' trailer at your place for the week.

Anyone else ever do a trip like this, have any ideas?

Don't just leave it in any parking lot or behind someone's business.  It probably won't be there when you get back unless you have prior arrangements. Either of you have a friend or relative say in Georgia? That's your best bet.

Maybe someone here on the forum can help you out at their ranch near where you want to drop the truck / trailer? Like I said, if you just leave it some place I would fear it would be towed by the business or property owner. You just need to make prior arrangements to avoid problems upon your return.

If'n you want to ride from Tennessee, I've got plenty of room for your trailer.

You might pick a 24 hour Truck Stop Flying J or such and see if they would for a fee or even free.  Another avenue might be a gated storage facility that people park RVs and boats.

I've done it several times, but I'm lucky enough to have a brother that lives in Canton GA, just north of Atlanta.

He went and moved to a Hotsy Tots neighborhood and the ASSociation won't allow trailer parking, even in his own driveway. Angry  Yeah, I'd live there.  NOT.

The last time, I was able to park at one of his buddy's house.

I thought about contacting a storage place the does the month to month thing, just to see if they would do a week or so.

You might try calling area dealers (which sell the brand you are riding). Many bike dealers have trucks and/or trailer rigs parked in their fenced yards. I'm certain that many would extend such a courtesy for a fellow rider, especially if you offer a small yet fair storage fee of $10 - $15 bucks per day. Just an idea. Have fun. I miss those crazy youthful days when I actually rode my old Shovelhead down to Daytona (from N.Y.) each year. (and I made it there and back, without problems, at least 60% of the time)                                                   Mike in the Adirondacks

I'm just South of Myrtle Beach, I could probably make a space for it. From here it is about a 7-8hr ride.
