Looks like the entire Cherohala is ground zero.
Center of totality crosses 165 on the Tn. side in 5 places, & 143 in Nc. twice.
We're gonna scout some overlooks first chance we get. Want an open view West so we can see the moons shadow comin'. I'll post some gps cords or mm'rs when I get 'em.
Anybody else got a good spot planned?

My hometown, Hopkinsville, Ky is supposed to be the best spot in America to see the eclipse. motels and hotels were booked two years ago. The city has signs on every entry coming into town as reminders. I'm not really up on all the details but the actual best spot is a little north and west of downtown and some landowners have been contacted and they are selling parking spots.

Another map of the path across America in a broader view; NewValk's is very precise.

Heading to central Oregon with friends from our astronomy club. We are going to RV camp on BLM land. Motels are booked up since last year,up to $1000 for a room, all camp grounds booked up. Oregon summers are wonderful for clear skies in the summer.

Yeah, I heard Hopkinsville, Ky. was the happin'n place. It's closest city to "darkest dark". The 2 markers on the interactive map I posted are "longest duration" & "greatest coverage". Zoom it up & it will take you to the exact coordinance.
Your town's gonna be a zoo that week Brother!

My plan is to go down to Kentucky and stop at the first rest area that is in the path of totality about 2 hours before the main event.  Then set up camera gear and make myself comfortable.

Well Mr. Bovine,
Should you decide to overnight, come on over to Frankfort.   I always have a place for a Valkyrie rider and a nice warm, dry place (inside the shop or garage) for that Valkyrie.   cooldude

I like that idea.  Wish it was one or two days earlier.  I am at 90 percent outside of Dayton.  I remember making a shadow box to view one once.  Many good ideas on the internet now for safe viewing. but with an optimal 2.5 minute window surely good camera pics can be obtained and I will try myself.

We are going to RV camp on BLM land.

So are ya'll going to riot and destroy things?

Shout "Hands up, don't shoot"?

Oh, wait! I guess you mean BUREAU OF LAND management...

My bad!  Carry on

Well, I got two brothers running with me, and the plan was to return that evening to home.  Since they have to work the next day.  Appreciate the offer greatly, and might still take you up on it.  But, for now, it's a day trip thing.
again, thanks for the offer!

Yikes! One of our favorite campgrounds (Indian Boundary) is 86 site with beautiful mountain lake & swim beach. You can only reserve 6mo. in advance, so I can't pull the trigger on them 'till about Feb. 21.
Wishin' ya clear skies!

That's pretty much us too. Campin' or in hotel/motel we'll spend the weekend ridin' & lazin', then head up the mountain after breakfast. First contact's about 1pm. on Cherohala. I will scout some westerly overlooks though. (any excuse to ride!)

You're the first person I've seen recommend a 10. Most suggest 14.

"Welder's glass of shades 12 through 14 are popular and safe solar filters, easily obtained at welding-supply outlets. Most observers prefer shades 13 or 14; the solar image through a number-12 filter is uncomfortably bright."
http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/solar-filter-safety/#sthash.7vhDPvOR.dpuf%22

I don't know welding
but not sure I'd trust my vision to a 10.

I'll be on the Oregon coast watching it. Only campground I could get was in Estoria but we'll get up early and make the ride down to Lincoln. Total eclipes is anywhere between Newport and Lincoln.

Well, looks like Turkey Creek Overlook! It has a pretty good size parking lot with a few pick-nick tables in a grassy area with pit toilet, & most important an unobstructed Westerly view of the valley floor! (I bet you can see for 50 miles on a clear day!)
Turkey Creek Overlook's on the Tellico Plains, Tn. side at mm16, about 1 mile past the Indian Boundary Campground turnoff headed East toward Robbinsville, NC.
That's the good news, now the bad news. The entire Indian Boundary CG, as well as Cheoah Point CG on the Robbinsville side is booked.
I may have to scout some viewing locations other than Cherohala!
(but this...will be hard to beat!)

Hey there Mr. Whiskey,
I'm taking you up on the viewing invitation!
Planning on leaving Thursday am, arriving Robbinsville Saturday.
If it's good with you, I'll just meet up with ya when you head out to watch it.
Or we can catch up Sunday sometime. Appreciate the leg-work you're putting in to find a great place to see it!

Update; for anyone considering Clingmans Dome I jus' heard on our local radio today Gatlinburg & Cherokee are doing a joint venture up there. Gonna be runnin' shuttle buses from both sides of the mountain for $30 an a$$. Not our thing, but thought some might dig it. Sorry I don't have ticket info yet.
