I live in Los Angeles and have done Emergency Management/Disaster relief professionally for the last 20 years.  Although the San Andreas is overdue for a catastrophic quake, there is absolutely zero chance of CA breaking off and floating away.  The most likely scenario is a 7.8 quake lasting for about 1-2 minutes.  1-2 minutes is a REALLY long time to shake that hard.  Infrastructure will be destroyed.  Water, gas and electricity will be down for months.  Widespread fires and civil unrest are guaranteed.  The county of Los Angeles alone is home to 11 million people.  Its going to be very rough. The relief effort will last for years, thousands will die.  The world economy will be impacted.

But we aren't falling in the ocean. That part is nonsense. 

I know that some here hate California.  I'm ok with that.  Especially during winter when I can ride to the beach for a swim while y'all are shoveling snow.

All we are asking is that all the crazies in California be on the part that would break off and float away. Preferably to the northern Russian territories. The vodka awaits so it is not like we would be sending them there without any hope.

that just proves the light from the stars is old. A new born baby seeing the stars for the first time doesn't make the baby millions of years old. The baby's first birthday cake would be awesome though.

Ok. The current subject is the age of the Earth.
Can it be determined by the stars? The answer is no. You cannot establish that the star (which ever one you choose) and the Earth were formed at the same general time. The light from the star may have been well on it's way to Earth before the Earth was formed. So there is a disconnect in this theory that cannot be bridged.

Fossils just prove the age of the fossil. Unless the plant and animal life occurred at the precise time of the forming of the Earth the fossil is also unable to determine the age of the Earth.

Conventional science has the Earth in the neighborhood of 4 billion years old.
I would dispute that on 2 points. 1. That the earth must have been somewhere 4 billion years before that and 2. Time is a human construct. To us we see the Earth as 4 billion years old and we assume the physics of the solar system applied from the beginning. The point is there is much that simply cannot be known about this issue.

The only thing I can say for a certainty is the earth is older than me. A lot older to be sure.

Rick, if I've learned anything on here. Religion is a sure fire way to have everybody pissed off. Probably even worse than talking about Obama. But since we are friends I'm sure we can talk freely. I have little more than a faith that there is a benevolent Lord looking out for us. Other than that, I can't say much about any religion. None have felt really completely right. I agree with you, science and religion are not mutually exclusive. But I also believe for every zealot in Academia and science, I'd bet there is at least the same amount of religious zealots too. Arrogance knows no bounds.
On a side note, how's the heat your way ? We get to escape for 2 weeks to AK.  One of my Harley buddies group (old man gang) is putting a weekend at Grand Canyon Caverns in September. He is all excited because they are going to burn 2 "jap bikes" this year. What's wrong with these Harley people ?  You should come.

Thanks Rob, I don't disagree with you about the hypocrisy on both sides, however Science today has become largely politicized and less scientific.  Weather here is hot, summer has finally arrived. I appreciate the invitation to the GC ride in September, but I have my Annual Cousins Reunion that month in San Diego.  You and Brenda enjoy Alaska. Why don't you visit Shemya, where I was stationed in the USAF? It's Paradise out there!
