The northern industrial states practiced there own form of slavery.
They made tons of money from cotton, and owned (as did the Pierce Butlers of
Philadelphia) slaves and plantations in the South. They just didn't want to live
with black people. That's why there were always more free blacks in South
Carolina than in Massachusetts (check the easily available US census).
We all learned about the "compromises" made during the 1830s-1850s
when new states were added to the nation. Once there were enough
"northern persuasion" states to eliminate their need to compromise,
all bets were off. Though the Yankees had no intention of ending slavery
in the South, they were in a position to dictate to Southern men how
they were to be allowed to use the "shared territories". This is what
ultimately caused the secession.
