Most normal travel services provided daily to include hotels, car rentals, restaurants: etc, in and around the eclipse path are out of control. Prices have doubled or even quadrupled or more in these areas. Is this good business or just another example of gouging or greed?

I think the law about gouging is that you can't jack the price
during an emergency... when people are out to have fun
you can stick it to them...

Hell, get a better look and use a telescope. Without filters of course.  Grin  they sell special glasses just for viewing the eclipse. I'll  be using welding glass out of a welding helmet.

Yep I got shade 14 glass and a pair of the eclipse glasses. I'll be using them together. It only takes a couple of seconds to damage your eyes.

I fear there will be 10's of thousands who will damage their eyes in some way.

Gouging?  Supply and demand determine the worth of a product being sold.  How many of you when it comes time to sell your Valk would know your machine is worth $4,000 but agree to sell it to the first one to offer you $1,000.

It appears that for a lot of us gouging is largely determine by on which side we stand.

You ever been around a Nascar event city on race weekend? I had that sleeper on my big truck fer a Reason. I'm just slightly outa the path of total eclipse. And I have like zero plans of gittin in that path. Have no idea now of prices but first year at Coors field in Denver Co. soda was pricy. Had to dang near float a loan fer a beer and a brat. Atlanta motor speedway I saw the last IROC race saw the old twisted sister practice and watched a truck race $50.00 under the roof on the start finish line. That same seat on Sunday for the cup race was $100.00. Rented the radio receiver headset for I think $25.00. Next day they rented for $50.00 I believe. Time I travel to an Inzane I spend a good chunk of change fer a week BUT it IS what I WANNA DO.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

I was thinking this thread had to do with prices in the for sale section. coolsmiley
I'm starting a collection of valks,I already own two,and considering the cost for wheels, bags, windshield and hardware,it makes more sense buying complete bikes.

This is great business. These folks are not "sticking it" to anyone. They are getting what folks are WANTING and willing to pay for a particular and rare experience.

This is far different than jacking the price folks MUST pay for food and other necessities in times of crisis or emergency. That is greed and gouging.

It's no doubt a neat thing to observe in person, carefully.

But it's a long trip for me, so I'll wait and see it on the TV and the Utube from the comfort of my recliner.

I've got several telescopes and am NOT using them for the eclipse. When it's total you don't need anything it's only before and after when the sunlight is shining. Price gouging ? Hoe about $3-400 a night for CAMPING or over $1000 a night for a motel or hotel. I'm driving up in my RV two days before and will stop for totality and get the hell out of town. BTW I am going to have big telescope filter. DO NOT LOOK THROUGH ANY BINOCULARS OR TELESCOPES WITHOUT SPECIAL FILTERS

Be very very careful with them. Full sun can still be too much for those.

I say if people are stupid enough to pay crazy prices,  why not try making some extra dough on the side from those stupid enough to pay it.

Me being a tight wad,  even I walk 1 mile or tad bit more if I go see a college football game or coliseum event, etc. where they charge say 10 bucks to park.  I can walk 1 mile to save 10 bucks.  5 bucks I will probably park close by, but not 10 being a cheap scape.  I need the exercise anyways.

An hour after the "big dark" you'll be able to salvage those things from the trash cans of America and the landfills will be choking on them by the end of next week.

The rest of the day will resume like it never happened and tomorrow's news will wash over it like 6 foot waves on the beach. crazy2

auto-darkening ones don't - at least not mine.  Most welding helmets are set up like that nowadays.  Old school non-auto ones OK if they are at least 14.  I'm taking my gas welding goggles and adding a #10 shade in front of them - checked it out, can look at the sun with no discomfort.  There are NO eclipse glasses around here anymore, I ran all over 2 towns today.  Am setting up 2 video cameras and filming the event up by Carhenge, Alliance NE.  Dead center on the shadow path. Hope I can operate w/o crowds getting in front of the cameras.  Unless of course they are Oss secretary candidates. Bikinis or braless.

Like Britman said, the glass in the welding helmet needs to be#14 or it's not suitable for the eclipse. Most standard welding helmet glass is NOT #14. Be careful out there!

This just in: "Colorado Department of Transportation said some experts have predicted that up to 600,000 people are heading to Wyoming, which could double the state's population."

It's Woodstock!!!!

My first question is this: "Where's the first gunfire going break out about road rage/camping rage/gas rage/food rage/eclipse rage?"

Also:  "How are all those blinded people gonna see to drive after all this is over?"
Highways are gonna be a mess; "The Walking Dead".
