Every year I get frantic and panicked calls about turkeys. Usually they are from young women cooking their first Thanksgiving dinners. Sometimes they leave the packet of guts inside, sometimes they didn’t think about thawing it out beforehand, and an assortment of other calamities. But today was a first for me. I got a call from a lady asking about the piece of plastic that holds the legs together for packaging. I explained what it was and that it needed to come out before cooking. She had sheer panic in her voice and was close to tears. She said she had been trying for 25 minutes to remove it and couldn’t do it. Now these things can be stubborn at times but they aren’t that tough. I told her to reach in and grab it and pull hard. She said “I have been, I’m 79 years old and I just can’t do it” . Then I started to feel bad. I was contemplating leaving work to go over there and help her. I gave her one more suggestion though. I told her to wedge a heavy spoon under it and pry up. She didn’t understand what I meant by prying up. So I told her to just get it under there and push down on the handle. SHAZAM ! I could hear the thing plop out. It might have hit the ceiling with force.  Smiley She seemed much less panicked now and was content that she would get the sucker cooked for dinner.

I hope her Thanksgiving dinner is the best of all her 79 years. We never stop learning new things. I learned today that just a little simple help can make someone’s day. She made mine.  cooldude

Maybe you can help me, I've never had to do the turkey myself before. How long should I microwave a frozen turkey for to get it ready for dinner?

Rob,

What a great story! Yeah, I know just what you mean about her making your day... Funny how that works, too... Anyway, it was good of you to even consider going over there to her rescue... I applaud your thinking! Happy T-day... although, it looks like you're doing just fine anyway...

3 minutes should do it, 4 if you like your turkey well done.  Smiley

Thanks Bruce. Going over wouldn't have been much of a sacrifice on my part to be honest. A motorcycle ride away from the hordes of people in the store would have been pretty nice. I tend to get kind of jaded towards people complaining about only finding a 21 lb. turkey vs. the 22 lb. they wanted or some other piddly thing they are stressed about. As I first took the call, it seemed this was going to be another. When she explained that she had been giving it all she could for 25 minutes and that she was 79 and hearing the distress in her voice, made me just a little more human. She gave me much more today than I could have ever hoped to give her. Thanks for the kind words.  cooldude

Cool story Rob, bet that almost made it all worth it cooldude

In the other turkey post in the tech board, you stated 35k lbs of turkey.

Was that an exaggeration? ???

At 20lbs average, that's 1750 turkeys? Shocked

No, unfortunately it’s not an exaggeration. And that doesn’t include the fresh turkeys, another 6,000 lbs. of those. As an aside. I was talking to one of my workers about how we came out on them. I ordered the 2,100 turkeys back at the end of July. We ended up with 20 turkeys left over. I told him “you know it’s a shame now that I’m near retirement and my career is nearly over, I’m starting to get the hang of this”.  Grin in reality, it’s just a crapshoot. Much is dependent on what the competition does.

Also, I’ve had stores in the past that sold nearly 2 truckloads of turkeys. Close to 60,000 lbs. It’s too bad we were only getting $.25 a lb. back then vs. $.79 now.
