While futilely trying to clean my sticking turn signal switch (Turns out it wasn't just dirty, two of the springs had been mangled beyond usage, just ordered a replacement assembly. Ugh, there's $100 I wasn't planning on spending) I had an interesting idea pop into my head. If you were presented with a button that, if you press it, would immediately return your Valkyrie to BRAND NEW status, BUT you would lose all modifications, accessories, etc you'd made or added to your bike... Would you press that button?

Just an interesting thought experiment, as our beloved bikes are starting to show their age...

(And no, you don't get to pull off the unobtanium farkles first! Wink )

Lets see,
65 years old,
expected riding years left? (5?, 10?)
NEW bike with no expected maintenance issues for the rest of my riding time.

YUP,
I would push it

I've never owned a new bike, so yes!  I bought my 18 year old Valkyrie with 26K miles. That's less than 1500 miles a year! What's that equal?  7- 8 tanks of gas a year?

No way would I push that button.     She is as close to perfection as I'm gonna find, she's all mine and she is one of my passions.

Wait, I got lost in the moment, are we discussing "ladies" or our ""Fat Ladies"?

I like thinking about hypothetical questions like this. Last year at our September Valhalla gathering the guys all sat around the fire and we started off with common "poll questions" and answers about oil, tires, riding techniques, etc and then it evolved into completely hypothetical questions like this....turned into one of the more enjoyable bike gathering evenings that I can remeber in a long time.
Would I push the button? That's a tough one. I've spent 16,years making my bike into exactly what I wanted, and it feels such a part of me now. On one hand though, I plan on keeping and riding it for a long time and it's my only ride, so starting off fresh would be appealing. Another way of looking at it however is I have less than 150,000 miles on her... DDT is pushing 600,000 so really, I've most likely got a LOT of good trouble free riding left on the old girl... and all those little nicks and creaks and squeaks are a big part of her character that I love so much. So I guess NO is my final answer Smiley

Ditto.  And besides, I'm not even close to wearing one out yet, as far as I can tell.

A lot of my chrome and wheels and paint are showing their age (just like me).  And that's OK.

I'm NOT pressing that button.  I've got a list of over 100 accessories, upgrades and alterations to/on my '98 Tourer, many of which are unattainable today.  Sure, Lady Val is looking her age, but it's not bad for a twenty year old bike.  I still get plenty of complements...

Don’t need that button.  The Cobra bike is like new even though it’s 21 years old with 160,000 miles. All controls buttons and switches are working perfectly.  Nothing to wish for to be more like new.

And Bruces bike is a close second as far as "like new" still way ahead of what a 21 y/o bike with 60K on would normally look like

So, no.  No button for me either.

Thats one Nice looking Valkyrie!

Thanks! It lacks... a certain shine... that another red bike I know of has...

I got it as an eBay beater bike, just lucky it had good tins all around, and
it only had 24k on it, so whoever left it out in the rain (apartment parking lot?)
didn't hurt the motor any...

Stan- NJF6Cowboy's Valk IS is for sale so the question is very real for me

It is about the nicest (well maybe just a bit nicer than the 01 reverse red and black and the jade bikes) looking well maintained Valkyrie out there

But, alas, I have no room for a 3rd bike

And for the record, since I posed the query, even though my Valk is not the best maintained, and is really starting to have issues, show her age, dings, scrapes, bits of rust, etc.... I don't think I'd push that button. I got mine brand new fresh out of the crate, and it took almost the first decade of companionship for me to get her set up juuuuuuuuust right for me, even knowing what I need to do and acquire (There was a lot of trial and error the first time around, boxes at the back of the garage full of accessories that sounded a lot better than they were), don't think I'd wanna go through all that again.

On the flip side, given the opportunity, it would be nice to do all the mods again, but do 'em the RIGHT way instead of the hacked together "Meh, it works" way I did it the first time. (In my defense I was in my 20's when I bought my Valk, a lot wiser now!)

Yep.  I learned what I like/need on Deerslayer, one piece at a time, what works and what doesn't.  Then I setup Jade with the mods all planned and harmonized together.  Wouldn't rollback Jade; it couldn't be better for me.  Wouldn't do that to Deerslayer either.  Though I would change a few things and of course plan the installs better.  But had to learn that, so Jade really is a re-worked Deerslayer.

No I would not do that on my Customized 99 Interstate.  If I wanted a striped down Valkyie or Valkyrie Interstate I'd just buy one.  I see several of them for sale several times a year with under 20,000 miles.  Cost too much money and time to find the accessories for these older bikes.  I like to buy bikes that come with lots of accessories.  Then take off any I might not like.

OSS,
Stan's bike sure is nice.  Love the paint job. Would look good in my garage too but no room with Trish's Trike and my 09 Goldwing with the 99 Interstate.  Her Mustang convertible does take half the garage.  Keep telling her we need a larger garage.

No, not for me. As many have stated, I've spent too much time and money to start over. The first 42k I put on it in the first seven years, averaging around 6000 miles/year. The last five or six years my travels have been limited due to my wife's health so the mileage per year has dropped off drastically, barely 1k per year. Due to my own age and the relatively low miles on the bike, I figure it will outlast me by quite a bit so wouldn't want to start over. If/when things take a turn at home, if in the near future(age wise) the miles will then pile up rather quickly.

Would there be an option on that button (maybe press it twice quickly?) so instead of our bikes going back to brand new... our bodies would go back to feeling 20 years old again (heck, even 30 or 40 would do).  Now, that may change these poll results  a little...  Wink

I pick up my 97 standard this Thursday, when I rode it last Saturday I noticed the turn signal switch most certainly doesn't push in like it should. I am going to guess the spring is trashed, hopefully I can devise a way to fix it without spending $100.

I'd press because I would enjoy doing all the mods all over again.

Truth be told, was thinking of another project bike.  Would have to sell the 1100 chopper, though.  Man that thing is fun to ride!
