Can't remember the post here recently , but I said that my son had bought a brand new Harley in College Station, Tx, dealership.    I said he paid $56,000 for it.   Its got less than 1000 miles on it.    He was driving it this weekend from Houston to New Braunsvilles, about 150 miles and on the way it started ruinning bad and smoking so he limped into his destination in New Braunsvilles and called the dealer.   They drove him out a dealer demo Harley and determined that he had fried a piston.  They left him the demo Harley and took his bike back to dealership and said they would have his bike ready in 2 weeks with a brand new factory Screaming Eagle Engine.  Amazing.

If Bruce (DDT) is in the neighborhood, he might be willing to perform last rights on the HD......   Wink

Amazing...that he needs an engine?  Or amazing...that they brought him a bike to ride?

Was talking to an acquaintance that has ridden an HD for years last night.    She knows I ride a Valkyrie.    She was telling me that she had just finished rebuilding the engine, I asked why, what was the issue?  Her response surprised me.   She said, I break it down every winter and rebuild it so that I won't have any issues during riding season.

I didn't say a word.........  True story.

That M8 has a bunch of problems that should not be.  Which is a shame, because by most accounts Harleys new platform is a winner.  Glad they serviced your son so promptly, it does not always work that way.

It's amazing what they have to tolerate and energy and $$$ spent to participate in that club.  I don't get it.  I LIKE to tinker.  But not to fix broken things and recover from bad design and execution.  I like installing NEW features, conveniences, "chromatherapy".  Almost done with my Rostra cruise control...

Bein as Ross-da prez-feeds his Valkyrie addiction by working on Harleys I know of what you speak.  Next time you talk to her find out how much she laid out fer the h/d and what rebuilds are setting her back-time and moola-and then lay out DDTs tale. I'm with MarkT here-unless you have money to burn WHY on Earth would some folks shell out 35G 60G every other year fer a m/c??  uglystupid2 Made mention of this before but every spring round these here parts I see lotsa 8  10 year old h/ds with less than 8G on the clock and what they are asking appears to be a good bit of the national debt.  Roll Eyes RIDE SAFE.

If H-D continues to lose market share it won't be from so-called Indian, as much as from Harley Davidson. Every mfr. has the odd defect here and there, especially when penny-pinching is done to compete with more inexpensive competition (Hitachi alternators come to mind) but Harley is just shooting themselves in both feet and then falling down the stairs when running from the pain. Way too many defects in each new rollout, and from things that aren't new technology, only new applications. They have (had?) the advantage in the big bike market of a ready customer base willing to pay extra for average, and with less yearly model changes they should have had more % of income to devote to process control, and eliminating tiny problems instead of make new big ones. Very sad. Amazing what will people will spend for a new toy with bad to medium build design and quality, but they still buy 'Vettes, too, right?

It really does not matter...the HD panache is hard to beat. I have a friend getting back into riding after a good spell and all he wants is a HD...I have espoused the good quality of the imports for a V Twin and he will not hear it. WHich reminds me of a buddy that road a Kawisaki Nomad...we would switch up every once in a while...HE LOVED THE VALK but could not get past the idea that he would own anything but a V-Twin...I dont get it.

Personally I don't mind the HD aura, I just picked up an older low mileage softail way below value. Strip it, clean it up, go through the mechanical, new paint on her and off she goes to some sucker.    Evil

Even if I have to rebuild the power plant it will still be a $ in my pocket. I could make more parting her out but I really hate doing that to any bike.

Harley Davidson owners are preoccupied with image and sound, so much so that they've forgotten the basic principle that backs up those two aspects; performance. Image and sound are nothing, they are meaningless, without performance, but you can't convince people of that today.  Performance.  You can't have image and sound without performance to back it up. You just can't. If you try, you've got a facade, a hollow shell and you're just a wannabe hiding within it.

Oh, come on now...

You know that 97% of all Harleys made are still on the road today!!

The remaining 3% actually made it home...

Years ago I was reading Black Echos page. I liked the one HD riders wife told him her "old mans" Harley could beat his Hiyabusa or as she called it Hiyabullshit. I laughed so hard on that one.

that sucks for your son spending that kind of moola and not able to enjoy it.  am sure dealer will take care of him and fix the issue all at no cost to him.

My HD neighbor is trying to sell for past few years his 2003 HD ultra classic for was 8.5k now down to 8K and no nibbles.  He talked to local HD dealer and said should be able to get near 9K for it but also said they will NOT take  it in buying outright since have too many used ones to sell the way it is.  flooded market of used HD's all over.

pretty sad about same year as my 2001 valk I/S paid 8K for 8 years ago still could probably get 7K for it while he paid like 14K for it 10 years ago or so and spent 5K more to get it from being slow and only can get 1K or so more for it selling it.

Wouldn't think that to be true but, there will always be followers who want to be a member of the cool kids.  They (apparently) think cool rubs off by being in the crowd.  HD has done a very effective marketing job over the years.     Many HD riders honestly believe they are riding a superior motorcycle.   It's their money, they can believe what they wish....

Rams

I've been saying this for years!

Take the 883 (do they even still make it, I don't know...or care).

The novice "wanna be" cyclist figures he can get a "HARLEY" for $7500!!! WOW!!!

And then be one of the "cool kids"!!

So he buys it!
And of course then has to get the HD do-rag, vest, jacket, glasses, chaps, boots, underwear (I'm assuming, never checked) and everything either has HD on it or Harley on it.

Then after a few months, when the newness wears off, he realizes this bike vibrates to no end and is really uncomfortable!
Needs a more comfortable bike, and has to get a waaay more expensive HD because he's got all the associated gear!

Always thought that was a GREAT marketing strategy!! (and it worked for a good while)

I saw this first hand.
A friend totalled his Dyna dodging a car that pulled out in front of him and I asked if he was going to buy a "good" bike now and he said he'll get another HD cause he's got all the "stuff" for Harley!

It works all different ways. I've had way more Hondas than Harleys over the years. The only Harley stuff I have is Tees from around the country & world from my customers. Harley does sell a lifestyle, but it's unfair to say everybody bought into it. Too wide a brush to paint with accurately, IMHO. Love my CB 750s. Love my Valk. Love my Dyna.

Yea, you're right.
I didn't mean to insinuate all HD guys are like that.
Actually was praising HD for their marketing strategy, as I stated, it worked for a good while.
