yes, right now my 2 ideas are to see if the shops here have one or if there is an alternator repair shop that can replace the bearing. Thanks for the help  cooldude

If ya go that route, pretty sure mine had a '99 Aspencade in it & it's pretty easy to "re-clock" it. (It's obvious what has to be done to get it to mount correctly once you're lookin' at 'em side by side.) Jus' be gentle when you separate the casing so as not to break the wires to the winding! Other than that, I'm pretty sure mine was the same part number as the Valk, fit & worked perfect, & was 'bout $400 cheaper cooldude

Rob,

Hate to hear this, but... It is part of being on the road, especially with an older bike. I've had to replace my alternator several times over the years, including last summer in Michigan. Except for the first one that came in ALI when she was new, all of my replacements have been 1500 Wing alternators, and I always get nice, long lives from them. Can't tell the difference, as far as I know, so...

If you could even find a Valk alternator, the price would indeed be a couple of hundred dollars more! The 1500 Wing alternators used to be fairly common and usually in-stock at dealers. Members have also stock-piled them, so something will turn up soon for you. Anyway, you'll most likely wind-up with a Wing replacement, but that's just fine, IMHO, based upon my own experience.

Looking forward to hearing of the 'success' you've had with this and of the entire trip back east in a few days. See, a silver lining... a yarn to share with the rest of us! (Give me a call, if I can do anything...)

Thanks, Mike. I might take you up on that. I’m going to see if the dealer can overnight one or maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll have one in stock.  cooldude

There are several new ones for sale on Ebay.

Maybe you could contact one of the sellers directly and get them to overnight you one.

I examined the noise again this morning. I was 90% sure it was coming from the alternator. After I removed it again I started the bike up to see if there were any sounds. None. I’m 99% sure it’s a bearing in the alternator. I have it at a alternator shop now. They have 7 others ahead of me though. Looks like I won’t know till 3 or 4.

Thanks everyone for your help and assistance ! Hope to see everyone in a couple days.  cooldude

The 2 things I dislike the most about a Valkyrie. Changing the u-joint and its boot, and changing the alternator. If they’d have just given us one more inch of space, it would be a cakewalk. I struggle with these cursed things. Doing it in a hotel parking lot with minimal tools adds to the drama. At least I didn’t swear in public.
I brought a spare u-joint, so I’m sure that will not go out.  Smiley
