I had started a thread a while back and I thought I had a lead on replacing my bags and adding a trunk at a reasonable price but it seems this deal has fallen thru.
I didn't realize I need to replace my bags because of the trunk I would really like to add a trunk but I'm not looking to spend as much as buying a new bike considering I got the bike for free. I'm hoping maybe someone here has removed their bags and not looking to replace them and will to part with them please let me know if anyone has any leads.
Thanks

Don't need to replace bags, just the hinges. Just buy for an interstate and they will fit in place of your hinges. May also want to get the cables to hold the lids on incase you forget to latch one.

I was told that the 98 bags are not convertible but the newer ones are does anyone know if this is true or not? I would rather not swap out the bags if I don't need to!

The only difference I know of is the tourer bags had a line down the back and interstates do not. We converted my brothers bags to interstate hinges with no problem. He has a 97

Do I need one per side or do I need a total of 4 (2 per side)?

A 29 and 30 per side. So you need 2 sets.

This is good news! Now I still have to find a reasonable priced trunk! I also need the hardware to mount is as well. It would really be great if I could find an all black one but I think they are few and far between, I believe Interstates came with two tone paint.

There were FAR more black interstates made (every year '99-01), than any other two tone.
Your chances for a black one are good.

There is a difference in the cable attachment points in the lids when using the I/S "hinges." The early Tourer lids didn't have those attachment points prior to the I/S being introduced. Once they started building the I/S and the bag dimensions were the same as the Tourer it was more cost effective to make just one type of lid that worked on either model. The I/S lids unhook at the hinge and hang down at the side, the Tourer lids just flip up which causes them to hit the side of the trunk. The different cables allow for the lids to either hang down or flip up. If you're going full I/S on the lids, you'll also need the standoffs that keep the lids from banging against the side of the bag body. Again....the mounting points for those standoffs aren't in the early Tourer lids.

A fellow member of this forum reached out to me and offered a very good deal on a GoldWing Trunk however I think this would require a bit of work/mod to made it work and frankly I'm not looking for a project! Has anyone here ever done this? One of my concerns is the lower area of the backrest has no padding it looks like the seat on the GoldWing is much larger and somehow ties into the backrest. I don't want to install something that is going to look like crap I really would like to find a stock interstate Truck in decent shape! I have been following the ones on Ebay and frankly they look like they need a bit of work more then I care to put into it

You wont like this answer. Sell your bike and buy an IS. It will be cheaper and give you more, than converting your bike.
It will also make it easier to convert to a Super Valk too.

The first one-Blue- will need lights. Could get costly. The second one-Black- has a major crack across the bottom. As mentioned, a little TLC but not beyond repair. I looked at both myself and saw the cracked bottom only after several times through the pictures. Don't know how I missed it several times but I did.

I have been following the ones on EBay and yes I missed the crack the first time as well As for selling mine and replacing it two issues first it was a gift and I wouldn't feel right selling it! Second it only has 4000 miles on it and it is running great hard to replace with something as good without spending more then I want to spend! lastly if I were going to replace this bike I'm not really sure what I would replace it with I would want fuel injection and anti locking brakes and the bikes that I have in mind are again out of my reach at this time. I have too many other hobbies ones my wife really enjoys to participate in with me the bike she tolerates so she is not looking to spend a lot of money on something new. My Car she pushed me to buy and that was three time the price of a new Goldwing! So for now I will continue to look for a truck this is all I really want at this time. Frankly this bike is great the way it is I don't need to make any changes just ride it and enjoy.

(or two and a good used car) Unless you need locking storage badly, you don't really need a trunk. Use helmet locks, or take them with you. Use a good waterproof duffel for stuff (and a good size one will take two full face helmets). Otherwise, a good Givi, of the size you need, mounted to the luggage rack (or maybe a bigger flat plate on the luggage rack) will do the job, and not look terrible. And some have lights. Then you don't have to worry about the OE mounts, interstate fender struts, wiring harness, and paint. http://mei.net/~bob/Cycles/GiviBags/

How big is the large Givi trunk? Can it fit two full face helmets? It looks like this trunk sits high enough and far back enough to allow the saddle bags to open without having to modify the ones I have? I would really prefer to install something that would look factor however the is a huge difference in price!
